I was asked by @aims_uk recently to respond to an article written by a group of doctors in which they told people not to use the term ‘Obstetric Violence.’ As someone who researches obstetric violence and who has experienced it first hand, my initial thought was ‘why do health care practitioners feel they have the right to dictate the narrative and silence women?’ If victim/survivors do not want to use the term - that is their prerogative and I would support them in their personal choices. But obstetric violence is an appropriate term to describe the systemic, institutional and structural violence many women experience in maternity ‘care’ in this country and abroad. And it perfectly describes my own experiences. Will I be changing my language to suit the preferences of the institution that abused me and my babies? Here’s a little glimpse into my when, where and why I do what I do to help shine a light on abuse and how love and kindness helped honor my journey. I was raised by an incredibly loving mom and a posessive passive aggressive, demeaning, manipulative, father. Who coincidentally also calls himself a preacher. Yep, he still an associate pastor who leads a church. Which if we’re honest, is where and how many abusers hide in plain sight. Standing right in front of a of the people they serve. It’s the cleverest of disguises. Growing up I saw many people challenge my father outside our home, but it was not safe to disagree or question anything at home. My father made It clear what our roll was in his house. It was the childrens job to obey and honor. To respect but not respond. I see now, that wasn’t an environment focused on growth- it’s an environment focused on control. I saw my mom deteriorate over the years protecting a man who never was going to be who she was telling the world he was. The scarring and hurt that comes from a toxic parent probably isn’t something we talk about enough. None of us are perfect, including our parents, but there is a point at which imperfect becomes destructive, taking away from children the love, warmth and nurturing they deserve and replacing it with something awful. Trauma! When children are raised on a diet of criticism, judgement, abuse and loathing, it’s only a matter of time before they take over from those parents, delivering with full force to themselves the toxic lashings that have been delivered to them. 🇿🇦The power of being a nobody: I found myself this week thinking if “I am allowed” to post my thoughts on the current horrendous situation we are dealing with in music. For those who don’t know, light has been very brightly shone on the absolute abuse of authority in the music scene and we are now collectively dealing with a trauma to the euphonium world which has us divided. My thought was if I speak out loudly and give my thoughts on this situation I will ruin my chances of a network here in Europe. I am a girl from South Africa who is educated in SA, grew up in SA, is new to Europe, who doesn’t really know many people and who is “aged” as my colleagues would say in the DE. I am a nobody. And then I caught myself, and realised what power there is in being a nobody. The situation where a teacher can abuse their student stems from a collective of people, the “in crowd”, who allow for this setting to happen either passively or actively. Over the years, I have seen female friends quit music because a professor laid their hands on them, told them they play like a girl, said they had a pretty face but no talent, told them they couldn’t beat a boy who plays loudly and most recently have open conversations about that persons attractiveness in front of them (speaking as if the person isn’t there). The people who get to do this are booked! As teachers, as conductors, as performers - they are often in the “in” crowd. So, we all live life once. If my outcry and saying NO! to this happening in any circle (because this happens everywhere - not just in music) means I have a smaller circle and stay a nobody then I am ok with that. Because I would rather be on the side of the people who need help healing, who need someone to speak for them, who needs someone to stand by them, than to ever help the “in” crowd. I believe the world needs music. It is a gift but people are gifts too. A new bill that could strip away protections for gray wolves is being considered by the House of Representatives, and Wyoming activists are asking people to sign a petition against it. This comes after the recent case of horrific abuse to a young wolf in Daniel. The Facebook group Grizzly Bear 399 Legacy and More is urging people to tell their representatives to vote "no" on House Resolution 764 - what's known as the Trust the Science Act. It would allow states to remove gray wolves from the endangered species list and set hunting and trapping seasons. "This bill directs the Department of the Interior to remove protections for the gray wolf under the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA). Specifically, the bill requires the Interior to reissue the final rule titled Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; Removing the Gray Wolf (Canis lupus) From the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and published on November 3, 2020. The rule removed the gray wolf in the lower 48 United States, except for the Mexican wolf (C. l. baileyi) subspecies, from the endangered and threatened species list. Somayeh’s husband, Amir Afghanipour on the Midnight of June 2011, purposely poured a bucket of acid on his wife and child while they were sleep, so they could not live a social normal life any more. As a result of this incident, Somayeh’s and her daughter Rana’s faces, hands and part of the bodies were severely burned. Also Somayeh lost her ability to see and Ra’ana lost on her eyes. According to medical specialists, Somayeh needs at least hundreds of surgeries and Ra’na needs more than 70 surgeries. Government and villagers paid for some of these surgeries. They also sold their lands in order to pay for more surgeries. “Love can be forceful“ Somayeh says. Somayeh Mehri died on April 13 after respiratory complications following injuries sustained after her husband threw acid on her and their youngest daughter, Rana, in 2011.
