Originally made in Iran where it sat at the shrine of Shaykh Safi al-Din, this fragment is part of a larger 10.5m x 5.3m piece and is known to be the world’s oldest dated carpet being made between AD1539 and 1540. Making its way to England in the 1870s, it was noted by designer William Morris to be of “singular perfection… logically and consistently beautiful”. It was later purchased by the V&A for 2,000 pounds (equating to 322,076 in todays economy) and is now on constant display.
