It seems that 2024 will be the year I rekindle my love of working in a sketchbook, thanks in big part to the inspiring sketchbook tour videos of the lovely @rebeccagreenillustration ✏️ Here are a few springtime things: teensy blue violet blooms seen on a neighborhood walk and some plants from "Wildflowers of the Boundary Waters: Hiking Through the Seasons." 🌷 I've been pulling out my sketchbook every time I have a new idea to explore or just for fun. I forgot how satisfying it is to put materials on the page without a specific end goal in mind. Print design by @3palmsstudio I see many portfolios that are "general" in nature, meaning they have a bunch of different designs for different products. I know some people teaching classes have told you this is OK, but in my experience, it's not very effective. When your portfolio isn't focused on the sector you're trying to license with, it does two things: 1.) It wastes the art director's time by having to search your portfolio for the product they manufacture. If my company makes fabric, I don't want to see your stationery designs because we don't make that product. 2.) It shows the company that you aren't interested in THEM. When you pitch to a company, you should have done your homework on the company before sending them a portfolio. Know what type of designs they use. Know who their customer is. Know if your artwork is a good fit with what they already offer. In my experience, I have found that whether you're presenting a portfolio at a job interview or to a company for licensing, they are much more receptive to those who understand what the company does and who the customer is. When you present work that aligns with that company's brand, you've given yourself a huge advantage. This is why you should tailor your portfolio to the company you are pitching.
