In our culture, we give honor and respect to our Grandmother Moon. Full moon ceremonies are held in many communities. The ceremony may differ from place to place. During this time, we share Women’s teachings and teachings of the current Moon, and a Potluck Feast at the end. It is a powerful time of prayer for our relatives and to be together as women and celebrate our path in life. During a full moon, women gather in a circle, from the youngest to the oldest, representing the life journey from infancy to old age. We drum and sing. Tobacco is placed in the fire, and we ask Grandmother Moon for special favors, certain energy clearings, and assistance with clearing out negative energy as well. Food and cloth offerings are made to the Sacred Fire, and water is lifted. When blessing for the water is requested by a woman, water becomes sacred and healing water. Anyone healing or dealing with addictions can overcome their addiction by working with the 13 Moons. If you attend a Full moon ceremony you will receive a great blessing. I envisioned a space to gather and learn culinary skills from a Traditional Indigenous Foodways perspective, surrounded by people who share this love and commitment to caretaking this precious knowledge I learned how to cook at a young age from my mother and grandmothers and I deeply honor the way I cultivated and experienced my skills around our home fire. It has taught me beyond nourishment, it has gifted me the school of life.I was able to make relation to our foodways by observing the Matriarchs of my family, by tuning into the land and the seeds that carry our sacred blueprint. This is a way of life, our affinity to our earth mother, the nourishment of our interdependence. TE AMO GUATEMALA❤️🇬🇹🙏🏽🌹🍯☕️ This full moon eclipse, I’ve landed back “home” in the US. But now I have a second home in Guatemala. Everyone I met recognized me as a fellow Guatemalan. They treated me like family, and told me that this was my country too, even if “yo hablo un poquito Espanol”. Despite being a US citizen, and indigenous to this land, there have been many times I felt disenfranchised for being both mixed race and Native American. In Guatemala, I felt One Heart, One Earth. Despite the poverty, pollution and corruption, and what I’d also refer to as a third wave of colonization with spiritual bypassing, cultural appropriation and distorted capitalism, the people are as beautiful as they are brave. I ask foreigners to check their privilege when visiting these lands and people who survived not only colonization at the hands of the Spanish, but then also suffered from the civil war at the hands of their own government and outside corporations. So when you eat your bananas, coffee and cacao, take a moment to give thanks to those who have given so much and still say Gracias to spirit and the Earth for being alive.
