I'm a teacher, and having the opportunity to be back in the classroom this week and last really filled my heart ❤️ It's been a couple of years now, but it felt like riding a bike, and it was a reminder that I'm really good at it 😄 Sharing skills and traditional knowledge with youth is such an amazing experience. What we're gifted isn't meant for us to keep solely for ourselves. Sharing my culture is a blessing, one that I don't take lightly, and Indigenizing educational spaces is such an important task. I was able to share some of my language, what respecting our materials looks like and why we do this, and making an offering on the land so that we practice reciprocity and gratitude. They learned patience with their projects and that sewing and beading are like medicine to us. To share this knowledge in educational institutions that weren't designed or welcoming of Indigenous people is full circle for me. There's still lots of work to be done, but when I get to do these things, I make myself, my family and my ancestors proud. You’re like all the other Mexicans.” (I’m Boricua) That’s what my so-called friends told me when I told them about my growing interest in Native American issues and my desire to decolonize. I was very down. So anyway I cut them off, grew my company’s indigenous resource group to provide our native employees continued education opportunities and career growth assistance, survived my eating disorder and gained weight and began cooking with my homeland’s ingredients instead of colonial ideas of “healthy”, began to love the body that represents survival and am now helping it thrive, decolonized my beauty standards, revamped my wardrobe to include more Native American designers and artists, reconnected with my Taíno heritage, returned to my traditional spirituality and medicine, started healing intergenerational trauma, and began to show increased support for all the other dead and extinct people who are neither dead or extinct. On the occasion of the 109th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, @agbuarmenia community members walked to the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial in Yerevan to honor holy martyrs of the 1915 Armenian Genocide. The AGBU delegation laid a wreath at the memorial site and placed flowers at the eternal fire that perpetuates the memory of the victims. In New York City's Union Square Park, an often overlooked memorial honors the victims of the Armenian Genocide. The memorial, constructed in 1985, has 20 trees and a small bronze plaque. This symbol of remembrance is also near where the famed Armenian-American painter Arshile Gorky kept his art studio back in the late 1920s, a place he created many of his most pivotal works. Today marks the 109th anniversary of The Armenian Genocide. • The 1st picture is my great grandmother and my grandfather in Aleppo after being the only two members of the entire family to survive. After seeing his people systematically killed, my grandfather went to MIT and worked for the Defense Department to be part of the team that pioneered anti-missile missiles. He did this with the hope that this would ensure his people would never be harmed the way they were in 1915 again. • 2nd picture is myself in 2016 after performing my song “1915” outside The White House. I created that song to honor my grandfather and to tell the story of so many other Armenians like him who lost so much, and yet accomplished such great things despite it. I’m blessed to say that “1915” is being used in many high school and college curricula to help educate students about this important page of history. • 3rd is an expert of the song. The lyrics call for the acknowledgment of this crime against humanity and to hold the perpetrator accountable. The Will and Obituary of my 4th great grandmother Petra Pico 💗 ************** September 11, 1902 “PETRA PICO” ‘A Brief Outline of the Life of a Venerable Woman, Who Was Familiar With the Old Missions Days’ “Tuesday morning’s DAILY DEMOCRAT contained a brief notice of the death, at El Rio, on Sunday, of Señora Petra Pico, who passed away at the advanced age of 100 years. ‘Old Petra’ as she was known largely throughout Southern California, has been the subject of numerous newspaper sketches, her fame beyond that of her years, consisting in the fact that she was the last of the celebrated race of Indian basket makers, and continued at that occupation until a short time before her death, when her health failed. ‘Old Petra’ has lived in Ventura and vicinity all her life, and since her baptism into the church by Mission padres almost a century ago has always been a devout Catholic. It is said she never traveled farther away from home than Santa Barbara. “Petra until a year ago lived in Ventura on Spruce street, west of the court house.
