Happy Friday! As the week comes to an end we wanted to share another interesting #jacarihistory fact. Jacari was originally founded as a student society at Oxford University in 1956 and one of their first aims was to fundraise for a scholarship to allow a black South African student to study at Oxford. It was named the William Brogden Memorial Scholarship to commemorate one of the founders of Jacari who sadly passed away while studying at Oxford. If you're new to Jacari, you may be wondering who our small charity supports. We help children and young people who use English as an additional language (EAL) in Bristol and Oxford. The young people we support come from marginalised communities. Many are refugees and asylum-seekers who have recently arrived in the UK, fleeing conflict in countries like Ukraine, Syria or Afghanistan. They face considerable barriers to gaining an education, including the ability to communicate and understand due to their lack of English. They are also lacking in confidence and having to adapt to a new education system. Regular sessions with Jacari volunteers help these young people gain confidence and have a safe space to learn, supported by a university student who acts as a trusted adult and mentor. We're so happy to be back in classrooms supporting EAL pupils this week as in school sessions resume. While some of our volunteers visit children in their homes, we also have weekly after school sessions, where a group of Jacari volunteers attend and support their pupils. This means they can do a mixture of one to one lessons, alongside group activities and games. This week we wanted to highlight the challenges faced by children and young people who use English as an additional language (EAL). They are a diverse group but hopefully this will give you an idea of the kind of issues they face. - EAL pupils can experience isolation within the school community due to language barriers and cultural differences. - Their new school will have unfamiliar behaviours and routines which they don’t have the language skills to comprehend. - They have to adapt to a completely different education system, and unfamiliar curriculum. - Schools often don’t have the budget and resources to provide the amount of additional support EAL pupils need to be able to fully participate at school. - EAL pupils can face assumptions that they aren’t intelligent and curious because they can’t understand or communicate in English. - Linguistic difficulties can mask additional learning needs, for example dyslexia. These are just some of the challenges faced by EAL pupils and the reason why regular support and friendship from our volunteers makes a huge difference to these wonderful children and young people. #EALpupils #education #schools #jacari #tutoring #volunteering #charitytuesday

As lots of brilliant new volunteers join our team this month, we're sharing more about what Jacari does. Jacari isn't just a tutoring charity. We also organise fun, enriching trips and activities for the young people we support, their families and our volunteers. In the past year, we've explored the SS Great Britain, cooked some yummy dishes at Co-Exist Community Kitchen, gone ice-skating, enjoyed a pantomime, visited the Story Museum, played adventure golf and taken part in a theatre workshop. We also organised fun summer celebration events with lots of games, crafts and activities in Bristol and Oxford. The children and young people we support are a wonderfully diverse group, representing many different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. This Friday, we are sharing more highlights from our trips and activities from the 2022-23 academic year: Bristol spring/summer highlights In March, we returned to @coexistcommunitykitchen for a second time this year, with a group of pupils and volunteers making delicious homemade pesto. In May we took a group of pupils and families back in time aboard the @ssgreatbritain, learning about maritime history and exploring the ship. In June we took our A-level student peer tutors and their pupils to play adventure golf, and we took a group of pupils to make robots at the Children's Scrapstore. We finished the year with a fun-filled summer celebration event during Refugee Week co-hosted by @wethecurious_ who entertained children with a range of science and engineering themed activities. Oxford spring/summer highlights In February we enjoyed a visit to Oxford's @thestorymuseum with a group of pupils discovering tales from around the world and creating their own stories and art work. In May we had a brilliant turn-out of pupils and families for our summer fun event in Florence Park. I have lived in Oxford for the majority of my life and previously attended two of Jacari’s partner schools. CHILD KILLED!!!!! 💥💥💥 8-yr-old Jacari Brown has been identified by the Cook County M.E. as the boy shot & killed early this morning 🕊🕯👼🏾🌥✝ On August 15th, 2023, around 4:25am, Chicago Police responded to a call of a child shot on Flournoy & Albany, on the same block of CPD 11th District. When they arrived, they've located Jacari inside a home with a Gsw to the chest. He was rushed to Mt. Sinai Hospital 🏥 where he was pronounced deceased 😪💔. CPD says Jacari was inside a home with another boy around his age, unsure if he was a relative or not, but both boys found a loaded handgun and started playing with it, that's when the gun went off 1 time striking Jacari in his chest. Area 4 detectives are investigating this incident, but CPD says this shooting appears to be an accident. No one is in custody as detectives are continuing to question the boy and the family. Hi, I'm Rachel, I'm the new Bristol Coordinator! I’m excited to have joined Jacari and can’t wait to meet lots of children and young people and parents and carers and volunteers and school staff- I feel very lucky to be part of the team! I’ve done lots of different roles with children and young people, including working as a social worker with looked after children and asylum seeking young people. I love meeting new people and learning about different languages and cultures (I speak bits of quite a few, but nowhere near fluent).
