L'ultimo grande capolavoro dei Metallica. Il canto del cigno dei veri Four Horsemen. L’ultima perla prima del tradimento. Sono solo alcune definizioni che permeano And justice for all, l’ultimo tassello thrash tout court del mosaico Metallica, sino a lì perfetto e irripetibile. 1988. La più grande metal band dell'epoca e di sempre (almeno assieme agli Iron Maiden), reduce dalla tragica scomparsa del geniale bassista Cliff Burton e da tre dischi che avevano fatto scuola, consegna alle stampe un platter dall'impronta più tecnica, ma non per questo meno violento e letale. Anzi. L'opener Blackened non lascia prigionieri, con quel riffing assassino che si stampa in testa per non mollarti più. Assistiamo sin da subito a una maturazione stilistica di Ulrich, che si lascia andare ad alcuni passaggi veramente notevoli. Hetfield canta rabbioso e maturo e sciorina riff assassini, Hammett ci delizia con un assolo melodico e penetrante allo stesso tempo. Non è da meno la title track, che presenta un caratteristico stop 'n go, vera delizia per i timpani di noi metallari. In dieci minuti la band condensa tutto il meglio che il loro percorso musicale potesse proporre in quel momento storico. Tolta la quasi totale assenza del basso (voluta e foriera di polemiche), la canzone propone tinte heavy thrash con ritmi meno violenti e più sincopati, durante i quali Hetfield ironizza sul sistema giudiziario americano. Menzione particolare per le parti di batteria di Ulrich, che da semplice (si fa per dire) picchiatore al servizio della canzone, detta i tempi e raggiunge il momento apicale della sua carriera. Altri episodi degni di nota sono Harvester of sorrow, con il suo incedere pesante come un macigno, e, soprattutto, One. Quest'ultima merita un capitolo a parte e rappresenta, a parere di chi scrive, il pezzo metal più completo mai composto. Alla prima parte strutturata come una angosciante ballad, come i loro capolavori del passato Fade to black e Welcome home (Sanitarium), si contrappone l'inferno sonoro della seconda metà: 🤘🤘🤘 Prosegue nei commenti 🤘🤘🤘

…𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐥𝐥 Metallica’s fourth album, and first following the tragic death of Cliff Burton, ‘…And Justice For All’, was always going to be a bittersweet affair. And so it proved. It’s the album that gave them their first taste of mainstream acceptance and success and it contains some of their finest songs. Yet the production seems off-kilter and certainly at odds with the fullbodied sound of ‘Ride The Lightning’ and ‘Master Of Puppets’. And you can barely hear that in Jason Newsted they have a new bass player. Musically ‘…And Justice For All’ is Metallica’s most complex album, almost progressive thrash, with lengthy songs and thoughtful time signatures. At first listen it can sound unrelentingly inharmonious, but given time, songs like the excellent ‘Harvester Of Sorrow’, ‘Blackened’ and ‘The Shortest Straw’ are not without an inherent melody. Cliff Burton gets one writing credit, on ‘To Live Is To Die’, while Jason ‘Newkid’ Newsted also gets one on ‘Blackened’. However the one song that makes the album so pivotal, and equally debatable, in Metallica’s canon of work is ‘One’. An antiwar song, it opens slowly and melodically, misleading the listener that it might even be a ballad, before packing an almighty thrash punch as it builds to a brilliant climax. Based on Dalton Trumbow’s novel and film ‘Johnny Got His Gun’, which tells the tale of a First World War soldier who has lost all his limbs and much of his face, yet retains his senses, it explores the idea of being aware but unable to communicate with the world around you. Various photos + clips from Metallica in Bangkok, Thailand on April 15th, 1993 🍻 Nowhere Else to Roam tour —Most of these are shot by Ross Halfin (not suprising) he’s been photographing Metallica for years and has gone with them on multiple of their tours. Anyways here’s a big dump of various things from Metallicas (only) time in Bangkok, Thailand! Including some photos being shot at the Wat Arun (A temple), James playing drums as a “pre-gig warm-up”. As well as a small clip of them on stage (the best I could find), and the band with snakes! There’s also a video I think of one of them on an elephant but I don’t have it atm and I don’t have enough space.
