Various photos from Metallicas ‘Desert Series’, shot by Ross Halfin in Perth, Australia in April ‘93 🍻 —This photoshoot was definitely one of the first I saw when I started going down the Metallica rabbit hole when I was younger— but I really like it. L'ultimo grande capolavoro dei Metallica. Il canto del cigno dei veri Four Horsemen. L’ultima perla prima del tradimento. Sono solo alcune definizioni che permeano And justice for all, l’ultimo tassello thrash tout court del mosaico Metallica, sino a lì perfetto e irripetibile. 1988. La più grande metal band dell'epoca e di sempre (almeno assieme agli Iron Maiden), reduce dalla tragica scomparsa del geniale bassista Cliff Burton e da tre dischi che avevano fatto scuola, consegna alle stampe un platter dall'impronta più tecnica, ma non per questo meno violento e letale. Anzi. L'opener Blackened non lascia prigionieri, con quel riffing assassino che si stampa in testa per non mollarti più. Assistiamo sin da subito a una maturazione stilistica di Ulrich, che si lascia andare ad alcuni passaggi veramente notevoli. Hetfield canta rabbioso e maturo e sciorina riff assassini, Hammett ci delizia con un assolo melodico e penetrante allo stesso tempo. Non è da meno la title track, che presenta un caratteristico stop 'n go, vera delizia per i timpani di noi metallari. In dieci minuti la band condensa tutto il meglio che il loro percorso musicale potesse proporre in quel momento storico. Tolta la quasi totale assenza del basso (voluta e foriera di polemiche), la canzone propone tinte heavy thrash con ritmi meno violenti e più sincopati, durante i quali Hetfield ironizza sul sistema giudiziario americano. Menzione particolare per le parti di batteria di Ulrich, che da semplice (si fa per dire) picchiatore al servizio della canzone, detta i tempi e raggiunge il momento apicale della sua carriera. Altri episodi degni di nota sono Harvester of sorrow, con il suo incedere pesante come un macigno, e, soprattutto, One. Quest'ultima merita un capitolo a parte e rappresenta, a parere di chi scrive, il pezzo metal più completo mai composto. Alla prima parte strutturata come una angosciante ballad, come i loro capolavori del passato Fade to black e Welcome home (Sanitarium), si contrappone l'inferno sonoro della seconda metà: 🤘🤘🤘 Prosegue nei commenti 🤘🤘🤘

Various photos + clips from Metallica in Bangkok, Thailand on April 15th, 1993 🍻 Nowhere Else to Roam tour —Most of these are shot by Ross Halfin (not suprising) he’s been photographing Metallica for years and has gone with them on multiple of their tours. Anyways here’s a big dump of various things from Metallicas (only) time in Bangkok, Thailand! Including some photos being shot at the Wat Arun (A temple), James playing drums as a “pre-gig warm-up”. As well as a small clip of them on stage (the best I could find), and the band with snakes! There’s also a video I think of one of them on an elephant but I don’t have it atm and I don’t have enough space.

Some photos of a young Cliff Burton holding a fish. 🔨 exact dates unknown. Probably the late 70s. [credit to owners/photographers] His mother, Jan Burton, actually was the one to teach him to fish. — Some fishing spots Cliff liked going to were the Lake Chabot in Castro Valley & the San Mateo pier [San Francisco]. James Hetfield said that Cliff usually carried around a Pocket fisherman and would go to any lake during tour and just fish. He liked fishing during the nighttime or evening & often went out with his friends. Cliff actually injured his right pinky finger during a fishing trip with his parents. He was trying to catch a carp fish with a 10 inch knife (or something like that) and this knife got caught in the fishes backbone, so this caused the knife to stop and Cliff’s hand slid right down the blade and basically ruined his muscle on the right pinky finger. That’s why in most videos you see of Cliff playing bass he keeps it straight and doesn’t move it around.. he simply couldn’t really bend it. “He was a journeyman fishermen. My mom started him out with the fishing pole. He [Cliff] decided that he had seen books, and he had read how the Indians used to stab the fish, and how different fishermen used to stab the fish with this long pole [that had an arrow]. He made his own staff with a metal arrow on the end of it - duck taped it all together. So we went fishing and Cliff would get out on the pier and he’d stand there and wait. He’d wait patiently for the fish to come up there and stab them right there and pull them out of the water. That’s the way he fished - For many, many, many years that’s the way Cliff fished and nobody was talking him out of it. As far as he was concerned, this was the way to go. And he loved it, he just loved it.” — Connie Burton

scott burton, cliff burton’s brother. who died on may 19th, 1975, by a cerebral aneurysm. cliff was only 13. “Cliff didn’t take music lessons until he was 13, after his brother died. He said to a couple of people, I’m gonna be the best bassists for my brother.’ We didn’t think he he had much talent at all. We had no idea! Metallica at the Polar Beach Party in Tuktoyaktuk on September 3rd 1995 —The show was dubbed the “Polar Beach Party” due to the fact it was held in a small seaside village in the Inuvik region of the Northwest territories in Canada, AKA its north of the Arctic Circle and directly on the shores of the Arctic Ocean. This village where it was held only had about 1000 residents at the time of this show. The show was held by Molson (Beer company) and all of the people who attended were selected via a sweepstakes, around 500 people came. The lineup for this private show consisted of Metallica, Hole, and Veruca Salt . In addition to all of this, apparently Lars had a running gag with Courtney Love on this trip— that they were engaged. When asked about how long the engagement would last, Lars said “I think it will last until we get to know each other.” (That isn’t even James related but I think it’s interesting so i’ll include it. Also, there’s soo many photos I love from this event but they just wont all fit into the same cropping ratio😭

🛠️ A photograph of Cliff & Jim Martin (Faith No More). I don’t know the exact date or year, possibly 1984 or 1985. [credit to owner/photographer] Q - You played with Cliff Burton in a couple of bands. How did you hook up with him? JIM: I was playing Zep and Skynyrd covers in a neighborhood band called Easy Street, which was named after a strip club that we started going to when we were 15. Our bass player quit, and he told us about Cliff. We started playing with him and he was already really good, way better than any of the rest of us. And he also looked pretty much the same as he did when he was in Metallica: bellbottoms and huge hair. He knew Puffy [Mike Bordin] and got him to join the band. By that time we were writing original stuff, which I still have some tapes of. We had a song called “Retarded Guys” that sounds similar to Nirvana’s “Come As You Are.” That band was together for over five years, but Puffy didn’t last too long, because he talked too much shit. He joined some pop-punk band. Q - You’re probably the least punk-influenced member of Faith No More. JIM: Yeah, I didn’t get into punk until Cliff turned me on in the early Eighties. I was still listening to Sabbath, Zeppelin and Floyd, and Cliff introduced me to bands like Fear, GBH, Black Flag and the Exploited. That stuff was pretty wild; it was exciting and new for me. Cliff turned me on to a lot of cool stuff when he was in Trauma, though I can’t say I was a big fan of theirs. Q - What were they like? JIM: They were kind of like—what’s that band with the drummer with one arm? Q - Def Leppard. JIM: Yeah, those guys. I didn’t really pay much attention to them, but they played around a lot and I used to go see them just because of Cliff. From a Guitar World interview in 1992.

Lionfish are a highly invasive species here in the Gulf of Mexico. They will virtually eat anything they can get in their mouths. Here is a juvenile eating ghost shrimp. Lionfish are an invasive species that threaten the well-being of coral reefs and other marine ecosystems in Florida. They are native to the tropical waters of the South Pacific and Indian Oceans, but were first detected along Florida coasts in 1985 near Dania Beach.
