Argema mimosae. Broken is beautiful. These striking moths lived out there life with me, to full fruition. You may be able to tell by the damage to their wings, in particular the middle one. But I couldn’t leave him out of this piece. At the bottom of the dome you have a couple of cocoons too. I enjoyed making this piece so much, and would love to create more like this. The last 8-10 weeks have been so very testing and trying.. For someone that struggles to regulate emotions, I’ve managed to get by on minimal breakdowns. ANNOUNCEMENT ✨ With the start of a new month comes new projects and a change in the way I run Jenna’s Curio Cabinet! As a lot of you know I have been battling my mental health for what seems like a lifetime, and whilst I’ve made tonnes of progress in various ways, I feel there are a few last little hurdles I need to overcome. To do that I will be taking a slightly bigger step away from social media, if I can get away with it. It also means I won’t be doing an update for a while, probably a good few months, especially now the website has a lot to offer for sale already. The demands of social media and the effects it has on my mental health isn’t healthy for me right now, and I know many other artists struggle with this too.So hopefully by removing these triggers for a little while, I can come back stronger and better than ever! Obviously I still have bills to pay and still need to make ends meet, which is why I am still counting on doing commissions for you! They’re always much more exciting and I really love working with you to make your dream piece come alive! So now we have touched basis with updates and commissions, I can honestly say that another reason I’ll be taking some time back from updates, is so I can focus on a few more fine art things, as well as a secret little gothic horror short film I am working on with a good friend! Recently I made a mistake. A boo boo if you will. I didn’t listen to my gut, and here I am now about to confess, feeling a little embarrassed I may add! So recently I released the “tarantula hawk wasp” piece. Now I always do research and look up insects natural environments when making pieces, and I noticed something seemed off, as all the specimens I saw lacked the yellow strip across the thorax, well, it turns out my supplier had sent me Vespa tropica hornets instead, which is actually a predator of other wasps! But I was so flummoxed with getting things done for the update I didn’t persue it at the time. I also thought it was a little funny that the original post got quite a lot of attention but no one noticed or second guessed it either 😅 anyway, So on a better note, I now have preorders of ACTUAL tarantula hawk wasps available on the website, as well as some megascolia velutina ducais giant iridescent black wasps, and some Vespa greater banded hornets! For the time being I only have a set amount of each available. Summer dreaming. This piece is probably my most difficult to photograph to date. I was really inspired to create a piece like this after paddling along the river and seeing countless damselflies and dragonflies last year. It was only as we moved slowly along the river that damselflies and dragonflies would then fill the sky, it was such a beautiful sight, and would highly recommend it if you have the opportunity. So based on that day I wanted to create a little slice of it, and I felt these treats worked perfectly for it. March meet the maker, better late than never right? Day 1&2 So I’ve always been a little reluctant to join in with these things, mainly due to my insecurities and lack of ability to post everyday, but here we are! *Life Update. As a lot of you know my mental health has been very up and down lately. I have been diagnosed with other mental health issues as well as the BPD, and whilst it explains so much, it’s also a lot to take on. I’m normally quite open about it all too, but for now whilst I continue to process and adapt, I won’t be sharing. I mean, Initially I was relieved to have the diagnosis, but soon after I was full of dread at the realisation of how bad my mental health was, and is, and how much I mask and hide away, which ultimately always leads to catastrophic meltdowns, and self sabotaging along the way of course. Now, I kind of understand why I do this, I understand the impulses, and the deep emotional pain that I feel, even when sometimes it doesn’t even feel warranted. And it’s not because I am broken. But with this new understanding of myself, I can continue to work on what’s important for me right now. I thought that was just self care. But today, after MONTHS, I ended up in the studio and pinned some insects, not because I had too, not because I needed to catch up on work and commissions, because I wanted too. It felt so good. So cathartic, and instantly I forgot about all the horrid feelings I had felt for the past few weeks. At this stage i feel it’s important for myself not to stray too far away from being creative, whilst trying to maintain a healthy work life and fun balance. I almost forgot, well actually I did forget! Jenna’s curio cabinet celebrated its 6th Birthday this month! 6 years! I kind of can’t believe it’s been that long but it almost feels longer! It’s been such an amazing journey. I haven’t been very vocal about it much recently, but it’s also been a full year still starting trauma therapy too! Due to all the goings on I didn’t achieve half of what I wanted too last year with the business. but I am really thankful to still be going and hopefully achieve all I wanted too last year, this year.
