Did you know that in the UK, blue butterflies (like this little Holly blue? I spotted) have long been associated with divinity and spirituality. Having one land on you was once thought to be a sign of God's favour, and many thought they represented the presence of angels or pleasant spirits/deceased loved ones. This was largely because the colour blue was thought to be a particularly holy colour, being the colour of the sky and therefore heaven. For example, priests in ancient Britain were often barred from wearing jewellery so as not to flaunt material wealth, but an exception was made for the gemstone turquoise due to its heavenly blue colour. I've been in love with the idea of butterflies' impact on our culture ever since seeing the Natural World documentary 'Butterflies: a very British obsession' years ago. My first blue butterfly encounter of the year. Perched on a violet flower on the edge of a little wooded bank last weekend was this Holly Blue. Wings closed Holly Blues are silver, but when they hold their wings open to catch some warmth from the sun they are a vivid, strong, bright blue. First orange tip butterfly of the year resting on self seeded forgetmenots. Such good camouflage works amongst these flowers and grasses as well as on hedgerows. Sunny margin of this native hedgerow is enjoying ever greater biodiversity with clumps of lords and ladies forming. Violets also spread exponentially and bluebells pioneering this area. Put it down over 13 months of heavy rain and my careful editing of invasive weeds. Had a very productive photo session with a large white butterfly (Pieris brassicae) yesterday 😁. They're better known as cabbage white butterflies, because their caterpillars are an absolute blight to brassica- broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, no vegetable patch is safe! I love them all the same and happily let them eat away at my nasturtium flowers (which they also love). I avoid pesticides/ weedkillers so the plants are safe for the bugs, and then the bugs are good to eat for the birds, everything works out alright in the end.
