Ohad, 49 + Eitan, 12 Yahalomi Ohad was shot by Hamas terrorists on October 7th as he tried to protect his wife and three children in their home in Kibbutz Nir Oz. ❤️🩹 The terrorists then took his wife, Batsheva and three children: Eitan, 12, and two younger girls, and put them on mopeds to take them to Gaza. The terrorists drove toward the Gaza Strip, but when they approached the fence and spotted an IDF tank, Batsheva’s driver panicked. In those moments, Batsheva managed to flee with her two girls, but Eitan’s driver continued into the strip and she wasn’t able to save him. Ori Danino, 25 💡Ori means, “my light” and Ori’s light was kidnapped from his family on October 7th. 🥀 Ori lived up to his name that day when he managed to escape the Nova inferno with a car full of lives that he ultimately saved. Risking his own life, he immediately returned BACK to the Nova festival to rescue more friends, Omer, Maya, and Itay, who had been fleeing from the terrorists on foot for two hours. Itay Regev, 18 + Maya Regev, 21 The siblings were shot and badly wounded as they tried to flee Hamas terrorists at the Nova music festival on October 7th. 💔 They were thrown into a pickup truck and taken away with their friend, Omer Shem Tov. (Painted in a previous post) Maya’s injury was more severe, but she was eventually snuck into a hospital in Gaza. Her dangling foot was re-attached in surgery, but sideways, at an unnatural angle‼️😳 Itay and Omer were taken elsewhere and leaned on eachother during this unimaginable time. We jump in one boat and hit a rock, then we sink. We jump in another boat and although it seems stable you see a small leak. Eventually, it fills with water and sinks. We jump in another boat and realize you only have one oar. There is no way you will be able to paddle with one oar. We jump in another boat and it is off-balance, you can’t seem to get the boat calibrated and eventually you fall in. Great. 🤘 We jump in another boat and hit a good streak - things are going well until another boat whips by and crashes into you. Finally, as we’re frustrated and cold, we get into the last boat. Exhausted, worn out, we just stop in the middle of the river. We worked hard and are just so grateful for peace. *We stay still in this moment.* This is often how life works. We try and fail - We fail when we try - And then, after much effort, we succeed. When we surrender and let go of the outcome, good things start to happen. Realism is the ultimate form abstraction. We try to classify the world around us with parameters and words where things begin and end, but that is only a philosophical fabrication of the reality of the structure of nature. If you put something under a microscope, you will see that abstraction is more real than a preconceived idea of what something is. Things are actually just concepts, but painting them is more about their existence and interaction with everything around them. 🧐 When I begin a painting with sketchy gesture drawings that develop into clear edges that are lost and then found, i’m able to feel the realness of my subject. The lack of control or structure can be terrifying at times, but sharing my process and feeling of discomfort has pushed me to grow as an artist. 💕 Painting should start with a question, not a finite answer. I find pleasure in figuring out answers to a wide range of questions by looking closely and carefully studying my subjects without having preconceived notions of what I’m looking at. Most people tend to look very literally at what is in front of them. Painting requires us to go a step further in order to see things for what they really are. A truly gifted painter has the ability to transform what they see into what it could potentially become. Lately I’ve been thinking about the origin of my beliefs. I’m compelled to dive into the unconscious - the vastness of space, the womb of star clusters as ideas, and memories that pierce into the conscious tangible world of existence that brings color, emotion, and life. I wonder about the phenomenon of fear and the perception of darkness as a negative force. I think about the symbolism in culture, dogmas repeated throughout history, and fear of the unknown. Perhaps a survival mechanism embedded in our limbic system, I still want to go deeper ... I’m drawn to the unknown, a place of mystery; profoundly beautiful. I have come to see darkness differently, as a womblike vessel that holds the polarity for the light glow. It is the duality that allows the mystery of the darkness and the clarity of the light to possess it’s independent power. I wonder about duality, about metaphors embedded in the ideas darkness. I wonder about judgement. I wonder if we can approach fear and fully immerse ourselves into the unknown to discover the light ... to sit into the vastness of the mystery ... Are we afraid of losing control? Can we trust? And can that ultimate trust become the biggest notion of beauty, can we truly let go? I think a lot about merging into my environment. 🤔 Sometimes this convergence happens naturally, but other times it requires conciliation in order for me to establish coalescence with my surroundings.
