Netherland merges collage, screenprint, paint, ink, glass, and mylar in mixed-media works and installations. She is based in North Charleston and received a BA in Studio Art from the College of Charleston. Chapman explores episodes of working-class life in America’s rural South through her paintings. She primarily focuses her still lifes in rural spaces—both wild and domestic. She received her MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Georgia and a BFA with an emphasis in Drawing from Clemson University. Artist Spotlight: Vicki Miller! A native of Georgia, Vicki began potting in 1989 as a hobby, but her infatuation with clay just kept on growing. soon evolved much more. After several years of relentless self-taught devotion in her remote mountain studio in North Carolina, making pottery became her new way of life. Vicki has developed a devoted following because of her signature glazes and the life that she infuses into all of her work. Her pots have a simple, understated elegance with their vintage silhouettes and buttery glazes. As Vicki often says, her pots seem as though they could have been found in your great-grandmother’s home. Having re-established her pottery studio in South Carolina, Vicki works every day producing face jugs, roosters, and folk figures as well as tableware and vases. She currently fires in an electric kiln, but has plans to build herself a new wood kiln. She has no plans to ever retire from making pots, because Vicki can't imagine a life without days of being wet and muddy. That's her happy place. Growing up in NJ and NY you were either a Channel 11 WPIX kid or a channel 5 kid. I happened to be a WPIX kid. Life is funny. Channel 11 WPIX came to the studio and spent three hours filming a mini documentary on Kyle and I. It was absolutely amazing. We had such a great time talking about legacy, family, challenges etc. Ben interviewer is such a great story teller. I look forward to seeing it when it airs. "Beyond The Sea" Chalk pastel on paper April 2009 ~6 ft. × 10 ft. This is one of the last pieces I made before graduating college in May 2009. I worked on it secretly in my garage, with this huge piece of paper taped to the floor & 5 sets of chalk pastels torn through. It was included in my solo BFA exhibit at a tattoo parlor/gallery, & has been rolled up in storage ever since. All my work is based on my own experience, & this one is based on a detail from a painting I'd made several months before. Someone suggested I try this as an exercise, & this is one of several pieces I've made based on previous work. "Beyond The Sea" is about geologic time in the desert where I'm from. Not only are we literally "beyond the sea" geographically in the present-day, this land was previously, several times throughout history, a sea-bed. This piece asks us to look beyond the sea, beyond the place where we are, the moments we're in, & consider geologic time. In early 2010, I made a series of five drawings based on photos I'd taken from moving cars while traveling somewhere in the US. This one was from a trip in December 2005 to the South; it was my first & only time to most of the states between Louisiana and North Carolina. I was amazed at the difference in the forests there from the ones I'm used to in the West. The inspiration for this image, taken near Great Smoky Mountains National Park, gave me a peaceful feeling. This drawing reminds me of the cozy days around the winter holidays, when you just wanna curl up in a blanket & dream about the forest. During my 2016-17 Maui visit, one of my last opportunities to paint came during a trip to "Kam 1" Beach Park with my uncle. He played beach volleyball there every week, so I tagged along a few times. She was incredible, and I tried to visit for all of her birthdays since our birthdays were just a few days apart. The last few visits, I made some paintings en route since I wasn't driving, & I consider these to be "plein air" paintings--even though they weren't technically painted "in the open air" they were still made from directly observing a particular place in time. I made this piece in 2014 a few weeks after getting home from a 6-week solo road trip across the Western US. During that trip, I spent at least 3 weeks on the Oregon coast in Lincoln City, where I frequently walked the beaches & explored Siletz Bay. I was particularly fascinated with the driftwood here. As someone from the desert, I was at first so puzzled by all this wood on the beach, whole trunks from other places washed up on the shore after being tumbled in the ocean. I loved their shapes & their visual mystery. I've made several pieces about the driftwood, but this one was recently beautifully framed after I'd forgotten about it for a little bit. And it's now available in my shop!
