In a nationwide APA survey in 2018, 5.5% of psychologists, Hispanic and other race/ethnicity, said they can provide services in Spanish. In 2024, Hispanic therapists increased only to 6.3%. More than 57 million people of Hispanic origins live in the United States with a projection of 119 million Hispanic people by 2060. Studies have shown that Spanish-speaking clients feel less comfortable sharing personal information and are less likely to seek mental health services. Unlike organs like the heart, lungs or kidneys whose parts and pieces work at the optimal level right as they are formed, the brain takes time to develop completely…25 years of time to be exact. It doesn’t mean that any parts or pieces of your brain are missing, but more so that some of those parts don’t fully mature for some time. This makes sense when you think about a baby…they don’t have the skills to speak words, problem solve, or figure out what time of day it is. Or take a teenager for example, they think they know everything there is to know about everything but they still have a very important part of their brain that hasn’t fully developed yet - the prefrontal cortex. This is responsible for decision making and cognitive control (discerning risk versus reward, for example). The brain develops and grows from the bottom up. Starting in the brain stem and ending in the cortex. And you want to know something mind blowing??...The single most important element to healthy brain development is RELATIONSHIPS and THAT deserves a whole post on it’s own. When I started my business I really struggled with motivation and having the confidence to 'get out there'. I struggled with my mental health. It dictated my success and made me feel worthless and defeated. maybe I’m just not good enough, period? That’s how I feel... not good enough... not smart enough, or pretty enough, or thin enough,or rich enough, or successful enough, I’m not good enough. Not Good Enough. I long to be good enough, Lately, I feel nothing... except emptiness, and hollow... I can’t for the life of me figure out what’s wrong. How did I get this way? What led to this? What’s wrong with me? Why can’t I make sense of it all. I think I’m broken. I feel a heaviness in my heart something is trying to happen far away within a part of me I don’t remember how to find. I feel lost I’m just wandering around within my mind, waiting. Wishing for someone to tell me what to do and how but there’s no one to help me. I cannot allow myself to trust, to lean on anyone. Been there, done that, it only ends in more pain, more shame and hurt. I am on my own with this. I have so much hurt and anger it’s bubbling to the surface.
