2023 was a wonderful year for us. We’ve performed and got inspired by the music of composers such as : Kate Moore, Vanessa Lann, Aart Strootman Mathilde Wantenaar, Georgia Nicolaou, Aleksandra Tonelli, Aspasia Nasopoulou, Klaas de Vries and Saskia Venegas amongst others. We’ve also had a series of concerts in memory of Wim Henderickx from whom we performed 5 different pieces at festivals such as @muze_van_zuid and @novembermusicnl. A Beautiful Path: Plein Air Composing (prologue) van Kate Moore gaat over componeren in een landschap dat zowel atelier als podium is. Kate Moore wandelt in verschillende fasen langs een zorgvuldig uitgestippelde route van Nederland naar de meest westelijke punt van Ierland. Onderweg met een aantal instrumenten, draagbare varianten van haar gebruikelijke studioinstrumenten, schrijft, componeert en improviseert zij in dialoog met de natuur en geschiedenis. After days of pre-selection of the 72 (!) entries we had a long session with this year's chair Kate Moore, playing and discussing 10 pieces. The final round to pick the winner will be Wednesday 14 December — and it's going to be a public event, at which the audience also gets to choose their favorite piece from the six finalists! “As an artist, how is it possible for me to engage with the current environmental catastrophe? I’m still finding the way. I don’t believe that art and artists are irrelevant in this.” As she’s making her way to England, Kate Moore reflects on the first leg of the journey in The Netherlands. “I’ve been doing this in collaboration with WaterWalks, with LUDWIG. They’ve been tracking my route. The concept is that artists from different disciplines observe the environment in relation to water in one way or another. This is relevant to me. I see water as the lifeblood of earth. Of our existence. And also the tell-tell sign of a healthy environment.” Kate’s also very reflective on the current situation in her homeland Australia as she walks through the Dutch countryside. “The Netherlands, with the presence of danger of overflowing. How that compares to the bush fires in Australia, where there is no water. Therefore the land is so parched and dry and it sort of spontaneously combusts. The land and the animals are burning. Many of my friends and family have had to evacuate their homes. They say more than a billion animals have burned. It’s inconceivable.” “I think about all of this when I’m walking. It’s sort of a meditation. I try to tune into the land, where I’m no longer separated from it. I try to walk as light as possible. I try to become a creature I guess. I try to think about the creatures as they carry nothing themselves, they don’t need to, because they know their environment, how it works. This weekend, on the 2nd of February, Kate Moore will conclude her journey, which will have led her through the Netherlands, England, Wales and Ireland. In her introduction video (link in bio) Kate explains what she is doing and why. “I’m creating my personal past, my ancestral pas, linking places that are relevant to me.” But it’s about more than that. “I believe in the unity of Europe. By walking this route, I want to create a statement about freedom. Freedom of borders, freedom between places. Breaking down walls, barriers and prejudice. I firmly believe in peace.” “Especially now, during an environmental crisis, we must remember the bond between people, places and nature. During this walk, I use my eyes, my ears and all my senses.
