John Luther Adams "A Northern Suite / Night Peace" I was recently listening to the splendid new release of double bass works by the Pulitzer-winning composer John Luther Adams. It's called "Darkness And Scattered Light" and played by the late Robert Black (the co-founder of Bang On A Can). Mind you, Pulitzer is a problematic award when it comes to music. Given out by Columbia University it has a track record of being shamelessly incestuous. For the longest time favouring its own 'academic' composers who wrote impenetrable and publicly unsolicited dodecaphony. Apart from their earliest well-founded awards to Ives, Copland and Thomson and comically belated praise of geriatric minimalists (Reich, Zorn and another John Adams) the rest of their selections will be unknown (perhaps for the best) to most people. But Luther Adams's recognition for "Become Ocean" is a richly deserved one. Using Alban Berg and Messiaen's favourite trick that piece is an intricately constructed giant palindrome. But in contrast to those composers, Adams manages to keep it as lush and accessible as yer Sibelius symphony. Which is doubly important cause it's an environmentalist statement as well. And those have to be as legible and likeable as possible. The Opus One recording above contains some of his earliest works. "A Northen Suite" developed under the spell of and as a tribute to the white expanses of Alaskan landscapes. He composed it in the first few years after moving to Fairbanks. Written for double wind orchestra, panoply of percussion, harp, piano and strings it feels like deeply pacifying crossbreed of hushed rumbles of Varèse, emotively viscous string writing of the aforementioned Sibelius and crystalline Nordic tapestries by our very own Canadian environmentalist R. Murray Schafer. On the flip side you’ll find a stunning choral work "Night Peace", also employing percussion and harp. Even more serene than Side A it register somewhere along the lines of Feldman's "The Rothko Chapel". Perhaps a bit sweeter harmonically, but no less arresting.
