Los Angeles–based artist Alake Shilling @sillyshilli paints a cuddly cast of characters who look like stuffed animals with big emotions. Her work, both cute and unsettling, has caught the attention of major museums like @whitneymuseum. We chatted with Alake to find out how art helped her express her true self. Then, gave our readers a color-by-dot to make their own “Sweet Curly Kitty,” one of her cutest creations. 😻😻😻 Read the full adorable feature w @sillyshilli in Kazoo 32, The Weird Issue, available now in our shop. Which invention could you imagine almost using most? From Kazoo’s Weird issue 32. 🤪 Chindogu is the Japanese art of inventing clever but not-quite-useful gadgets. The rules* 1. It can’t really be used. 2. It must exist. 3. It must celebrate its uselessness. 4. It must be a tool for everyday life. 5. It must never be sold. 6. It can’t be created only for laughs—it must try to solve a problem. 7. It is innocent. 8. It’s not taboo—can’t be mean or gross. 9. It cannot be patented. 10. It’s for everyone! *according to the “International Chindogu Society” #chindogu #unnecessaryinventions #unuselessjapaneseinventions #chindoguforkids #kidinventors #kazoomagazine

⭐️Faith Ringgold invented a new way to tell a story—by painting and sewing it on canvas. Her most famous story quilt, Tar Beach, is about a girl who can fly. 🔵We were so honored to feature Faith Ringgold in @kazoomagazine 18, The Storytellers issue. Here’s some of what she wanted our young readers to remember, and it’s great advice for us all: 🔴“No one can tell you what your story is, and no one else can tell it like you can. Your story is all yours to tell the way that you want to. . . Don’t pay attention to the negativity. Figure out what makes you excited and make art about it. Don’t allow anyone to stop you. Keep moving forward. Artists are always looking for inspiration. Look for it every day!” (This 4-page feature interview w Faith Ringgold, w a DIY story quilt activity, from #kazoomagazine 18.) ⭐️Rest in Peace, Ms. Ringgold. Thank you. #faithringgold #faithringgoldart #flyamoungthestars

Chef and food artist Jen Monroe of @badtaste.biz stopped by to teach us how to play with our food, and share her recipe for Mosaic Cake. 🍰 In a @kazoomagazine exclusive interview, Jen said:
“I’ve always been obsessed with food. I was the kid who always put olives on her fingers. I remember trying Nutella at age 11 and being fascinated that there’s a spread that’s not peanut butter. After college, I started working in restaurant kitchens, but I wasn’t good at it. So, then I trained as a butcher, but I wasn’t good at that either! It turns out that it’s as important to know what you’re not good at as it is to know what you are good at. 😬 Then my sister and I happened to read a French novel where a character hosted a dinner party and served all black food. It was so funny and lavish that it gave me this itchy feeling. What other colors could we do? So, we started hosting 10-course dinner parties for our friends where the food was all one color: pink, red, yellow, green, blue! It was such a hit that I started selling tickets for it, and, eventually, I launched Bad Taste, which is part art project, part catering business.” 🎨🍽️🎨 Jen’s best advice? “Don’t just try to be like everybody else. What makes you you is what makes you special. When you find your people—and you will—and when you give yourself permission to be who you are, the world becomes a bigger, more beautiful place.” We agree ‼️ To read the fun interview with Jen and get her recipe for Mosiac Cake in Kazoo 32, The Weird Issue, subscribe to Kazoo 🎉 #jenmonroe #foodart #playwithyourfood #womenchefsofinstagram #cookingwithkids #mosiaccake #gelatina #kazoomagazine

We usually don’t post Kazoo’s feature comics in full, but this @eflakeagogo for The Weird Issue is too good not to share. 🤪 Take a quick tour throughout history—from 380 Egypt (Hypatia) through The Yellow Wallpaper ( #charlotteperkinsgilman) to 2019 Switzerland (@gretathunberg)— and see how “weird” has been weaponized against women & girls who have something extraordinary to do or say. 📣 So, we tell our young readers: If anybody ever calls you weird, wear that like a badge of honor! Just say, “Why thank you! But if you think I’m weird now, just wait and see what I do next!” 🦸‍♀️🦸🏽‍♀️🦹 From @kazoomagazine 32, The Weird Issue. Kazoo on the big screen at The National Magazine Awards last night. 🤩 We were nominated for Best Single-Topic Issue alongside The Atlantic, Texas Monthly, Switchyard, and New York, who won the category with their Nov 2023 issue. To say we’re honored to be in their company would be an understatement. We didn’t win but got to celebrate a little and be inspired by the amazing, serious work in journalism this year. And of course any recognition for this FUN! 🎉 kids magazine we launched (and still run) from our kitchen table is super-gratifying. Our 2024 honors make Kazoo: 🏆 National Magazine Award winner (2019) 🏅 5x National Magazine Award Finalist 🏅 5x ASME Award Finalist 8 years ago, we created Kazoo for “girls who aren’t afraid to make some noise” and it’s still our mission—and it’s a serious one, too—to keep on making noise for them, and for a better future. CIRCLE UP, COWGIRLS! 🐴 For some reason *plays #beyonce again* we’re reminded of Crystal Orr from @cowgirlsofcolor who stopped by @kazoomagazine’s Confidence issue to share The Cowgirl Code with our young readers. How many of these do you do? 1. Walk your own path. 2. Live each day w courage. 3. Keep your promises. 4. Finish what you start. 5. Know where to draw the line. 6. Talk less, say more. 7. Treat others w kindness. 💕 8. Know some things aren’t for sale. 9. Be firm but fair. 10. Do what has to be done. This issue also features a short story about a rider finding her confidence on a new pony by @kimberlybrubakerb, a recipe for an ice cream baked potato from @cowgirlnyc, and a comic about #StagecoachMary the first African American woman to drive a US mail route by #alithaemartinez. What better way to celebrate #WomensHERstoryMonth than with an illustrated story of astronomer #VeraRubin’s life! This panel is from a longer @kazoomagazine story that was nominated for “Best Illustrated Story” by the American Society of Magazine Editors 🔭👩 In Kazoo’s words, “This is for every girl who’s ever looked up at the night sky with wonder or who’s ever pretended an empty paper towel roll was a telescope.” We’re proud to be named after such an inspiring figure in science! Read the whole story under the “Other Cool Links” URL in our bio ✨ . . . ALT: A set of comic strip panels depicting one era of astronomer Vera Rubin’s life, from wanting to study the universe in school and being discouraged, to being denied at Palomar Observatory because they didn’t have a women’s restroom. BIG NEWS 🏅 Kazoo’s feature “Little Things, Big Fun” was named a finalist for Best Print Design by the American Society of Magazine Editors (@asme1963). 🐞In every issue, Kazoo delivers a highly interactive experience, designed to engage, surprise, and delight our young readers with every turn of the page. There’s always something to read, of course, but—look!— there’s also something to draw, write, color, and sometimes even cut out. (Now more than ever, magazines need a really good reason to be on paper, and Kazoo uniquely demonstrates the necessity—and joy—of print.) 🐞One feature that stands out, in particular, is Kazoo’s 14-page “Little Things, Big Fun” package, designed by Sarah Goldschadt, in our Tiny Issue. It is a celebration of all things small, and yet through its clever design (and despite our microscopic budget), every bite-sized morsel of the story feels interesting, impactful, and richly layered. The 17 ladybugs, hidden throughout the package, are just a bonus, encouraging kids to look closely, and again. 🐞By playing with perspective, pairing large stacked shapes with small intricate patterns, and varying the type size, the design helps encourage kids to see the world anew. They can envision a pencil as a mountain or a vast ocean as a collection of tiny water drops. 🐞What’s small can be big, and what’s big can be small, and if we each understood that and learned to appreciate the world—and each other—from a new perspective, we’d all be better for it. 🐞 Kazoo’s design was honored alongside The New York Times Magazine, Bon Appetit, New York magazine, and Switchyard. We are so proud to be in such esteemed company! We are so lucky to have such amazing designers for Kazoo! Huge congrats to @sah_rah for this honor. Since @kazoomagazine launched in 2016, 2024 marks our 5th ASME nod & 6th National Magazine Award nod. 😊 This issue is SOLD OUT, but you can get some of our other back-issues in our shop. GREAT BIG NEWS ‼️ Kazoo magazine #31, The Girl Power Issue, has been named a finalist for the 2024 National Magazine Awards by the American Society of Magazine Editors. 🏆 We’ve been honored in the category of Single-Topic Issue alongside New York magazine, The Atlantic, Texas Monthly, and Switchyard. In the current challenging media landscape, this past fall, The Guardian declared the end of an era of feminist media. “Who will carry the torch?” they asked. Kazoo will. In fact, with us, it’s already burning bright. 🔥🔥🔥 Every year, @asme1963 holds an awards contest (which is to magazines what the Oscars are to movies and the Emmy’s are to TV.) With our 2024 nominations, Kazoo magazine is now: 🏆 1x National Magazine Award winner 🏅5x National Magazine Award finalist 🏅5x ASME Award finalist You can still get @kazoomagazine #31, the Girl Power issue, as a single copy in our shop. But we are print-only by design, and our issues do sell-out, so when they’re gone, they’re gone. Get yours now at the link in bio. #kazoomagazine #asmeawards #nationalmagazineawards #kidsmagazine

You go, girl! 💪 We start every issue of @kazoomagazine w an activity section we call “Tickle.” It’s around 14-20 pages of puzzles, word games, drawing, & more that readers can do in book, by themselves, without anything but a pencil (or maybe a few crayons). These activities are loosely tied to the theme of each issue. Here’s a bit from a Tickle page in our latest, the Girl Power issue, #31. #kidsmagazines #childhoodunplugged #kazoomagazine

1/30/2024, 9:19:59 PM

In every issue of Kazoo, we feature an original short story by a bestselling and/or award-winning author who we love. 💕 The parameters: It must feature a fierce girl protagonist, ages 5-12 (like our readers), in no need of rescue. 💪 We tapped author Lynne Kelly, who wrote Song for a Whale (a favorite in our house!), for latest, the Girl Power issue. Lynne wrote a sweet short story about a girl, who alongside her two best friends, must unexpectedly face her fear. 🙀 Lynne is also an American Sign Language interpreter, and a main character in this story is deaf. But, that’s not the crisis. Instead, as Lynne Kelly writes: “The girls had been friends since kindergarten. Ava and Eleanor learned sign language from Lucy and her parents. There was always more to learn, but if they didn’t know how to sign something, they’d write on paper or use the sign language alphabet to spell out what they wanted to say. Last year, the three of them started a sign language club at school.” In the course of the story, Lucy’s sign language is something more to love about her. And yes, with a little help from Lucy’s mom and some cookies from Lucy’s Dad, everything turns out Ok for the girls in the end. (We do love a happy ending, too!) 😊 This story is beautifully illustrated by @JesseWhiteIllustration. 🎨 You can get a copy of @kazoomagazine #31, the Girl Power issue, by subscribing to Kazoo. We can’t wait to read Lynne Kelly’s forthcoming The Secret Language of Birds. 🕊️ #kazoomagazine #raisingreaders #asl #deafness #deafkidsrock #childrensstories #childrensmagazines

Granola maker Nekisia Davis, founder of @earlybirdfoods, dropped by to share her fav granola recipe and some advice on life: 💬 “Don’t worry about what other people think. And just try to stretch, grow, and be the kindest person you can be along the way.” 💕 We include an easy-to-make-w-kids recipe from a renowned female chef in every issue of @kazoomagazine. Because the culinary industry is still so male dominated (a Forbes 2023 article says only 6% of Michelin restaurants are led by women) we want to highlight their accomplishments—& share their amazing food. 🧑‍🍳 Many of these recipes have stayed in regular rotation for us in our own home: 🍙Onigiri from chefs Niki Nakayama & Carole Iida of @nnakarestaurant (from Kazoo #26), 🍪 One-chip, Two-Bite cookies from @doriegreenspan (from Kazoo #8), 🥯 Biscuits by Sarah Sanneh from @piesnthighs (from Kazoo #7) to name just a few. 😋 ➡️ Read our full interview w @nekisia & get her delicious granola recipe in @kazoomagazine #31, the Girl Power issue, available in our shop. Weekend vibes ✌️ In every issue of Kazoo, we feature a renowned artist, and in our Fun issue, we featured 3! 🎨 🎨 🎨 Artists Macy Rajacich, Audrey Lyall, and Nikki Freyermuth teamed up to paint this giant mural on a busy Brooklyn block. They stopped by to tell our young readers about their process and share wisdom about making art together. 🖼️ The friends named their mural “Take It Easy,” and they included some positive messages for anyone who might pass it by: “Just breathe,” “You got this,” and “Keep going.” 👏👏👏 “We wanted to say something simple and uplifting,” says Nikki, who chose the affirmations. “The goal of the mural is to simply bring people joy! More cheer! More love!” 💕 Read the full interview, then do the mural color-by-dot in @kazoomagazine #29, the Fun issue, available as a single copy in our shop. 📣 @gloriasteinem stopped by our Motion issue to remind us,”The future depends entirely on what each of us does every day; a movement is only people moving.” So, we gave our readers a page to illustrate how they might make change happen, too. Our readers are young, but sometimes it feels like all of us are too small to make anything big happen. But change is always within reach. ⚡️Every great movement begins with one person. ⚡️ From @kazoomagazine #28, the Motion issue. #kazoomagazine #raisingdaughters #raisingleaders #runforsomething

🍿DYK: Long before there were computer-animated movies, artists created optical illusions using only paper and ink. With a twirl, flip, or spin, they made still pictures come alive! That’s how all our favorite cartoons were born. 📽️ In our Motion issue, we created our own DIY animation studio, complete with templates & full instructions on how to make a thaumatrope, roll-and-flip, flip book, stop-motion and this phenakistoscope. 📀The phenakistoscope [pronounced FEH-nuh-KISS-tuh-scope] was invented in 1832 by a Belgian physicist, who was studying how our eyes work. He discovered that by adding tiny slits between drawings on a spinning wheel, the artwork would transform from one big blur into an action-packed movie! 😵‍💫 Check our reels to see the #phenakistoscope in action. #historyofanimation #diyanimation #animationtoy #zoetrope #kazoomagazine

We start every issue of Kazoo w words of wisdom, in the form of a secret code for our readers to solve. For our Girl Power issue, of course we looked to icon @mskathleenhanna, the O.R.G. (Original Riot Grrrl) who inspires us not only for being a feminist rocker but for being a zinester. What’s more rad than punk and the printed word? We hope to pass that love along to our young readers. “We called it the ‘Room of Doom.’ Everybody knew deep staffing cuts were coming—we’d been warned of it that morning—and now every editor, designer, fact-checker, and copyeditor was just lulling about the 22nd floor of 1 World Trade, waiting for our phones to ring. We knew that on the other end of the line would be Human Resources, calling us down, one after the other after the other, to a windowless room somewhere below to deliver the news: ‘We need to cut your position. Thank you for your service. Do you have any questions about your severance package?’ This was 2015, and I got my call. It was just weeks after I’d returned from maternity leave. I was an editor-at-large at SELF magazine, where I’d spent more than a decade writing cover stories. I’d gone kickboxing with Anne Hathaway, shared a six-course dinner with Cameron Diaz, meditated with Rosario Dawson, salsa danced with Christina Applegate, and interviewed Taylor Swift, Beyonce, and Angelina Jolie to name just a few. I used to half-joke, half-brag that you could name any woman in Hollywood and I’ve probably interviewed her at least once. But times had changed since I’d started at Condé Nast in 1997 …” Kazoo’s Editor-in-Chief Erin Bried wrote about why she launched the 1st issue of Kazoo magazine, and how she’s managed to publish 30 more (over these last 7 years!) for Pages magazine. 🗞You can read all about it, here: https://tinyurl.com/PagesKazooFeature #magazinepublisher #childrensmagazine #independentpublisher #indiemagazine #smallbusinessowner #kazoomagazine #kickstartersuccess #condépast #erinbried #lanepress #printlives #printliveson #letskeepmakingnoise

Received my author copies of the latest issue of KAZOO magazine, where I have a short story! I adore the beautiful illustrations by @jessewhiteillustration. It’s really hard to tell a story in so few words, but I decided to say yes to the request and then figure it out. The lovely Kathi Appelt passed along a simple yet helpful bit of advice from Norma Fox Mazer: “A short story is still a story, just a short one.” So happy to see the finished product and to be in the pages of this wonderful magazine! #authorsofinstagram #shortstories #childrensstories #kazoomagazine #deafness

Looking back at the advice @diananyad shared in the very first issue of Kazoo: 🌊“Hi Kazoo Readers! If you want to chase after an impossible dream like I did, here’s my advice: We never learn by being afraid. We discover our courage, strength, and potential by taking a journey that just might end in failure. Better that we fail but wind up traveling a tough, magical road, and feel extremely proud of ourselves, than to not try at all.” 🌊We were already big fans but the #nyadmovie made us love her even more, and we loved learning about her friend @bonniestoll and her whole team, too. (Also, “Bonnie, I’m not even sore,” deadpanned by #annettebening, is the very best line and the thing we’re going to repeat every time we accomplish—or fail— at anything big.) 🌊So proud to have had @diananyad, such an extraordinary woman, in our very 1st maze! Courage! 🎺 🖍@mariswicks @diananyad @nyadmovie #inspirationalwomen #kazoomagazine

🏀 In our latest short story: Little Sparrow Hwang is so small, that everyone who knows her calls her “Little Bird.” But when she sees some older girls trying out for basketball, she wonders, “What if I can be part of that?” Cheered on by her neighbor, Harper, and inspired by superstar @WNBA player @suebird, Sparrow not only makes the team but makes some friends—and finds her confidence along the way. 🏀 Author @tae_keller is the Newbery Medal-winning author of When You Trap a Tiger, The Science of Breakable Things, and Jennifer Chan is Not Alone. 🏀 Every issue of Kazoo contains an original story by a bestselling or award-winning woman author, & each features a fierce girl protagonist. Past fiction contributors: Lois Lowry, Joyce Carol Oates, Angela Flournoy, and Karina Yan Glaser. We’ve collected 30 amazing stories over the years! Such an amazing night @nyliberty! Between the hoops 🏀 & @bigellieliberty 🐘 & the awesome sold-out crowd vibes 🎉, just 100% fun! (Hard to believe people once thought big crowds would not support @wnba play.) Celebs @issarae, @jason_sudeikis ( #tedlasso), basketball star @sbird10 (who cameos in the short story in our latest issue—we’ll post more about that tomorrow) & even #franlebowitz (who seemed to be having fun—but did not twirl her towel once) were there too. One pt loss, at the buzzer!, but amazing game just the same! Thank you! Since our tagline is #makesomenoise, too, we’ll be back next season to cheer you on. #nyliberty #kazoomagazine #womenshoops #wnba #girlsbasketball #kazoomagazine

Sing it w me: GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE … 🖍In every issue of Kazoo magazine we include a maze featuring an extraordinary woman. So, readers can learn about her life as they solve the puzzle. 🎸 Cyndi Lauper was the perfect choice for our FUN issue, since her feminist anthem has encouraged girls everywhere to have FUN —and everything else. Our favorite lyric, 🎤“Some boys take a beautiful girl, and hide her away from the rest of the world. I wanna be the one to walk in the sun, Oh girls they wanna have fun”🎤 Lauper later said, “It just means that girls want to have the same damn experience that any man could have.” 🔴 To read more about Cyndi Lauper, and a bunch of other fun stuff, get The FUN issue, Kazoo #29. Now available as a back-issue in our shop. #kazoomagazine #cyndilauper #feministicon #girlsjustwannahavefun (Cyndi Lauper 🖍 illo by @lubellwoo

PSA: An opinion is a personal belief, thought, or emotion. A fact can be scientifically proven, measured, or observed. No matter how anyone feels about facts, they remain true. Sometimes people present opinions as if they are facts. In Kazoo #4, w the help of @newslitproject, we tell our young readers to question, then research using reputable sources to find the truth. “If something you read or hear doesn’t sound quite right, check with 3 trusted sources.” (Preferably ones that haven’t had to settle defamation cases because they regularly lie on-air.) #foxnews #fauxnews #medialiteracy #medialiteracyeducation #misinformation #stopmisinformation #checkyoursources #kazoomagazine
