ON VIEW AT THE GALLERY ALEX CARVER Expanded Skin KraupaâTuskany Zeidler (DE) 23.04.2024â22.06.2024 (solo) Opening Reception Friday 26.04.2024, 6â9 pm Alex Carver Graft Harvest (Canto I), 2024 oil on linen 200 x 200 x 3.2 cm 78 3/4 x 78 3/4 x 1 1/4 in unique (ALC/M 24-03/U) Expanded Skin marks Alex Carverâs third solo exhibition at the gallery. Embracing a regressive arc in his paintings, Carver draws inspiration from contemporary biomedical imagery and diagrams as well as medieval miniaturist imagery of the Divine Comedy. His new body of work transitions from dense machine-produced geometries to hand-made paper models. The models are cut in an intricate pattern which imitates a process utilized in âskin graftingâ, known as meshing, and are then taken as raw material to be pulled apart and stitched back together within the holographic space of painting. Carverâs multilayered works convey varying degrees of illusionism, most primarily in the form of cuts, wounds and shadows, which threaten to consume the images and impressions contained within the frame of the canvas, only then to be gently pinned down with the trompe lâoeil acid green tabs of tape at their edges. (....) Through the appropriation of medieval paintings, Carverâs source imagery is highly structured and diagrammatic. Botticelliâs illustrations of the Divine Comedy serve as cartographic depictions of Danteâs Inferno, which Carver decontextualizes and then reanimates within his own illegible architectures. For me, painting is a literal skin which unspools across culture and history at a civilizational scale, and like our own skin, is a true sensory and metabolic organ. Painting is sensory because it can record its own production so intricately in the form of mark making and is metabolic because it consumes whatever representations we make with it, and then in turn is perceptually consumed in itself by us as viewers. Over the years this contradictory impulse to experience painting as a skin while also thinking of it as a holographic membrane of information has driven me to produce paintings inspired by equally contradictory source materials. On the one hand the brutality and literalism of body horror in the form of medieval torture, and on the other the sophistication and tool driven progress of the biomedical sphere in the form diagrammatic fragments of patents for surgical robotics, decellularized tissues used in transplant procedures and most recently in the form of the skin graft meshing deviceâ. -Alex Carver ALEX CARVER (b. 1984) lives and works in Boise. Water-fountains are often found outside Shiâa shrines and mosques, as votive and ritual sources of water in homage to the 7th century Battle of Kerbala in the desert where dehydration played a major role. The social sculpture offers a contemplation and materialization of books and reading. Since their beginnings as a book club in 2006, publications have been at the core of the collectiveâs activities. PrayWay refers formally to the rahlĂŠ, a traditional bookstand common to Central Asian Islam for holy books and the takht or topchan, what the collective calls RiverBedâin honor of its ideal placement by a source of water found at teahouses, roadside kiosks and at the entrances of mosques across Iran and Central Asia. PrayWay is a typical example of Slavs and Tatarsâ participatory, relational works, creating a space for conversations, and intercultural communication. The Contest of the Fruits SLAVS AND TATARS KraupaâTuskany Zeidler, Berlin (DE) 02.02.2024â06.04.2024 opening: 01.02.2024, 6-9 pm Slavs and Tatarsâ first animated film, The Contest of the Fruits, takes a satirical 19th century Uyghur poem (munÄáşara) as a starting point for investigations of language, politics, religion, humor, resilience and resistance, in the form of a rap battle between various fruits. The Contest of the Fruits was developed by the collective during their residency at The Hurford Center for the Arts and Humanities, Haverford (US) in 2021 and has been shown at Basement Roma (2023), Centre Pompidou, Metz (2022), and Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery, Haverford (2021). The presentation at KraupaâTuskany Zeidler marks its German premiere. Slavs and Tatars is an internationally renowned art collective devoted to an area East of the former Berlin Wall and West of the Great Wall of China known as Eurasia. Since its inception in 2006, the collective has shown a keen grasp of polemical issues in society, clearing new paths for contemporary discourse via a wholly idiosyncratic form of knowledge production: including popular culture, spiritual and esoteric traditions, oral histories, modern myths, as well as scholarly research. The collectiveâs practice is based on three activities: exhibitions, publications, and lecture-performances. The collective has published more than twelve books to date, including most recently ĐŃĐş ĐŃĐş (Look Book) with Distanz Verlag. In 2020, Slavs and Tatars opened Pickle Bar, a slavic aperitivo bar-cum-project space a few doors down from their studio in the Moabit district of Berlin. BRETT GINSBURG Wind, Water, Wood KraupaâTuskany Zeidler, Berlin (DE) Ginsburg pierces the empty volume of the gallery space with nine strands which stretch from floor to ceiling, heightening an awareness of the space and suggesting invisible axes onto which the physical space is plotted. Their position is constellated in relation to a diagram present in Marcel Duchampâs painting, Network of Stoppages, 1914, scaled to the footprint of the gallery. The chords, when experienced in real space, function as linear vertical axes, also serve as coordinates of Duchampâs diagram. This referenceâ embedded into the work yet eclipsed by the dominance of the chordsâ physical presence, underscores unseen yet omnipresent institutionalized codes, language, and systems. A composition of metal brackets and glass fixtures rest at varying heights, forming horizon lines across the room and directing oneâs vision to the space in between the artworks. For the center of this composition, Ginsburg repurposes a thermo bulb link, an element that lined the upper ceiling perimeters of the industrial spray booth he previously worked in. This device is installed in spaces where an atmospheric reading tool, such as a smoke detector, does not function due to vapors in the air, and a positive thermally actuated mechanism is required to operate in the event of fire. The metal bracket holds a glass bulb containing a mauve-colored fluid rated at a temperature of 182 °C / 360 °F, which would burst until breaking the bulb into small fragments if the space exceeds this temperature. This micro-explosion would trigger a sprinkler and the whole space would soon afterward be filled by blinding particles which would fully extinguish a fire. On view at the gallery! BRETT GINSBURG Wind, Water, Wood KraupaâTuskany Zeidler, Berlin (DE) Psychedelic and, to most, illegible compositions intersperse the figural painting in Wind, Water, Wood. Among other processes and machinery, the seemingly abstract works in the exhibition depict a combustion chamber within an engine and a compression space. The starting point for Extracted from a Flow, 2023 is a research artifact image of flow simulations run on the combustion port, showing the movement of fluids when compressed within the space. This technical imaging which Ginsburg refers to uses fluorescent colors to trace the movements and maximum compression. Contrast fluid visualizes the negative space in fluorescent green. He references a technical application of color coding in his works: primary colors are related to different fluids, coolants, greases and lubricants that allow machinic parts to glide against one another. Secondary and tertiary colors therefore dissolve into the 'in-betweenness,' as the emphasis of negative space obscures information.
