In Asako Shiroki’s exhibition ‘Evergreen’ @thegimp_importexport, spatial sculptures blend into a scent, objects dissolve into pure colors, and even materiality itself is detached from all physical forms, as souls journey from one state to another, retracing memories. 1 [...] The video installation Invisible yet still green was conceived amidst the distillation process of extracting pine scent. The focus, however, is less on the actual production and more on the abstract transitions between states of matter: Solid needles turn into liquid and ultimately into scent. This work features two photographs of pine trees from Korea and Japan. [...] The photographs are deliberately out of focus, transforming the pines into abstract patterns of color. By adjusting the camera’s lens to defocus, the finer details are obscured, yet paradoxically, this allows the intrinsic nature of the subjects to be perceived with greater clarity. As if the object’s very dissolution revealed the essence of its soul. [...] 3 [...] The pivotal work Evergreen, hanging from the ceiling on a silver chain, is at the center of the room. The term „center“ however, is somewhat misleading here. Evergreen is not only a spatial object, which begins on the floor alluding to the coastline of Japan and Korea and ends in the air with a glass bottle reminiscent of the size of a human heart. In Asako Shiroki’s exhibition ‘Evergreen’ @thegimp_importexport, spatial sculptures blend into a scent, objects dissolve into pure colors, and even materiality itself is detached from all physical forms, as souls journey from one state to another, retracing memories. 1 Asako Shiroki is based in Berlin and Tokyo. 2 [...] Melting into color. This work features two photographs of pine trees from Korea and Japan. [...] The photographs are deliberately out of focus, transforming the pines into abstract patterns of color. By adjusting the camera’s lens to defocus, the finer details are obscured, yet paradoxically, this allows the intrinsic nature of the subjects to be perceived with greater clarity. Within my new series of small sculptures, who are made from scribbles on paper and epoxy, based on my AI series "intuitive drawings", I asked myself, how do you emphasize the return to the naturalness of something that, as an aesthetic form, has its origins in the artificial? By also connecting it with a part of nature. I found ivy works best for this. It embraces the seasons and is evergreen. For me, evergreen is a word with absolutely positive connotations, a kind of infinity. This time it gets combinated by a linocut print of an ivy leave.
