Overall Texas State Parks Visited: 74/89 South Texas Plains Region Parks Visited: 6/6 # of Days in Texas State Parks: 93/100 Something neat about my adventures this year is I’ve been able to see the Rio Grande from three different locations along the Border from the outskirts of West Texas all the way down to South Texas. Also, did you know floods along the Rio Grande River can change the way the river flows and some channels can be cut off from the rest of the Rio Grande to make a resaca? My second region of Texas State Parks has been completed. I started South Texas Plains with a visit to Choke Canyon State Park and made a last minute change of plans to catch the sunset at Lake Corpus Christi State Park which also started the Gulf Coast Region. There are 4 trails at Lake Casa Blanca, in March I posted the Osprey Hill Loop, which includes the building on it, I also hiked about a third of the Mesquite Bend Trail. This was a pit stop between leaving Choke Canyon, where I stayed in their cabin at 1 hrs 45 minutes and an hour and a half to Falcon State Park for my cabin that night. The park had a lot of activity on the lake, but I didn't stop by there, though I did overlook it on the Osprey Loop Trail. The parts of the trail I was on here was pretty easy. The hardest part was the lack of shade. You're also at the top of the property so it feels sunnier some how. The hat definitely came in handy. Driving there felt a little surreal. That's the last picture. The clouds were so low I would have sworn if I had a tall truck I could have stood on the roof and touched them. @lakecasablancastatepark was my first far South Texas park of March. This is an old museum at the top of the Osprey Hill Loop (or you can park right next to it if you don't want to hike). I posted a small blurb about this on another post and someone from the park mentioned it was built as a replica of a local mission. So, still an abandoned(ish) building. I visited @lakecasablancastatepark and hiked 2 trails. This is the Osprey Loop. It's marked as moderate, but was honestly mid easy for me. There was a small incline but nothing that made me pull my inhaler out. It was pretty rocky, and I do think there were some additional biking trails that would have made it difficult. A fun thing about this trail is there's an abandoned building on it (it will get its own post) and when you get to the top you get to overlook the lake. Also, bugs loved those prickly pears. Tales of the Lake By Park Host Kim "Meet world traveler, George, who is originally from the small fishing village of Padstow, Cornwall, England. After a break from traveling in 2020, he was able to travel to Texas again and had an extensive stay at Padre Balli Park in Corpus Christi. This year, he has stayed and will stay at several Texas State Parks including 2 weeks here at Lake Casa Blanca. He particularly enjoyed the view of the lake in the 100-campsite loop and looks forward to viewing some of the waterfowl around the park. He’s hoping that this will not be his last trip to Lake Casa Blanca. His camping journey began in 2018. While working in a warehouse in Toronto, he spied a van with a “for sale” sign on it. It was a 7-year-old vehicle with an unreal 1,000 miles on it. After some negotiations, he purchased the vehicle and began converting it into a camper van. After a short trip in eastern Quebec, he decided to travel to Big Bend in Texas for his first major road trip. As he traveled around, he discovered that Texans are “real nice people to get along with!” In the late 60’s, George joined England’s merchant navy and traveled the world. During this time, he visited a number of countries including Dutch Guiana, Brazil, Japan, China, Russia, Philippines and Australia. Quite memorable for him was the time he was stranded in Brazil because of a strike and ended up spending 40 days in Rio De Janeiro. Eventually, he met his future wife, Suzanne, and has been living in Canada since then. He pursued electronics his entire working career including repairing televisions while in college. Then onto avionics, air movement control and a radar manufacturing company. He lived in Newfoundland, Canada for 7 years where he worked in marine electronics repair. Soon after, he would work in the Congo for 8 months helping install communications equipment around the country and eventually ended up spending time in Nigeria, as well. He also was employed by the Canadian Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean in Quebec City and finished his career in Toronto with Environment Canada, the Canadian equivalent of the United State’s NOAA." #lakecasablanca #texasstateparks #tpwd

Tales of the Lake by Park Host Kim "Hi! My name is Kim Beck. My wife, Pam, and I will be volunteering as park hosts here at Lake Casa Blanca State Park for the next three months. Park Interpreter Sydney asked if I could write and share about our experiences here in Laredo. Below is my first submission of two interesting park guests I recently met. The other day, I was out looking for birds in the park, when I came across Art and Sandy from Boulder, Colorado (pictured below). They had been staying in the park for a few days on their way to South Padre Island. They are semi-retired and have had their Wolf Pup camper for only a short time. It was pretty clear right away that they were avid birders. They were only going to stay one night but decided to extend when they discovered “the secret gem” of the park. The Ranchito Road pond in their mind is as good as any birding spot in the Rio Grande Valley. As a matter of fact, in their two days here, Art reported observing 60 species of birds and Sandy was excited to add two discoveries to her life list—the Green Kingfisher and the Least Grebe. Normally, they stay in private campgrounds, but really liked the fact that they were able to get a site here with a full hook up.
