In those early hours between dosing and fully awake I often get my best ideas, especially for my business. Usually I start to think about my goal and what I need to do then start getting ideas. The trouble is making sure to write them when I get up before I forget! I had one of those inspired mornings today and Ive just been sitting with A3 notebook, plain sheets getting it all down. I love my A3 notebook for this "brainstorm" mind map kind of work, I can write, draw, doodle or scrawl. As it's A3 I can write all my ideas on one page or write things really large. I feel more free with a large piece of paper, like I'm not boxed in. I write everything that I remember regardless if it fits with a goal or makes sense. Now I'm super excited because I've got a lot more clarity and direction about sharing my upcoming coaching program with you, the content I want to make for YouTube, Podcsst, Blog, Pinterest and here. I learned this lesson the hard way. As an HR leader, I’m always there for others and am ready to help whenever needed. The work I do can be extremely heavy and it’s hard not to take it home with me. I wasn’t practicing self-care or putting my oxygen mask on first, which led to burnout and physical stress. Self-care isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. We can’t effectively take care of others if we’re not taking care of ourselves first. It’s not selfish to take the time you need to do the things that fill you up. You’ll show up so much better for your family, friends, or those you serve in your career. It took me a while (and lots of coaching) to not think of resting as “being lazy” but rather as a necessity. Whenever I can, I start my day with a focused session on the part of my business that needs me the most. I put my phone on do not disturb, I get whatever I need ready (a cup of tea, some water, go to the bathroom...get it all done first), then I set a timer. I choose 50 minutes, because that's my most productive chunk of time before I start fading, but you choose whatever length of time works for you. I put on some music, close all distracting tabs and windows on my computer, and I go to work. Sometimes it can be hard to figure out where in our business needs us the most, especially if things are feeling overwhelming and there feels like there is so much to do. So ask yourself these three questions to help you figure it out. 1. What's slowing me down? We tend to avoid things that feel like roadblocks, but those are the ones we need to get out of the way FIRST so we can start moving forward as we want to. 2. What's costing me? Whether it is money, or time (because your time has value), what is costing you in your business? Is there a way to work on that? 3. What moves my business forward faster? This won't always be the job that looks most 'urgent' - it can be a number of things. Answering those three questions will give you a pretty good idea of what to work on in your focus time. As much as I often want things to go speedily, I am always reminded and pulled back towards slow. ✨ We must slow down to speed up ✨ All change and transformation begin with Pause. We packed up life in Oakland and moved across the country 📦 My mind and ego wanted to hit the ground running and immediately launch into this new life. My expectations were big and unreasonable 🙃 The last few weeks have been a constant reminder (and pull) of slowness and spaciousness. To allow my feet (and all our stuff) to settle under me. To decide and design what this new season looks like. To cultivate roots here in this new place. Uprooting and replanting takes time, energy, and patience. Cultivation is a process. I feel like I’m finally emerging out of the whirlwind and stepping into it 🤩 When I feel the need to speed up, the mentality of hustle creeping in, and the false pressures of busyness, I remind myself to actively slow, embrace spaciousness, and allow that to carry me forward ✌️ It’s a challenge and counter to so much of the noise constantly coming at us.
