Rhyothemis Variegata, known as the Common Picture Wing or Variegated Flutterer, is a species of dragonfly of the family Libellulidae, found in South Asia. It is a medium-sized dark bodied dragonfly with colorful wings tinted with pale yellow. There are a few black spots on the apices and nodes of the fore-wings. There is a large patch in the base of the hind-wings, marked with black and golden yellow. In females, the apical half of the fore-wings are transparent; the basal half is tinted with golden-yellow with black marks. The apical ends of the hind-wings are transparent; rest of the wings are marked with golden-yellow and black. It breeds in marshes, ponds and paddy fields. On March 19, 2024 we got up early and took a long hike on the trail from Gate 15 of Everglades National Park in Florida. Visita inusitada nesta manhã ao Memorial Dr. Elpídio de Almeida (IHCG), no Edifício Anésio Leão, centro. O referido "visitante" se trata de uma simpática libélula da espécie "Erythrodiplax umbrata", tratando de um exemplar macho. Possivelmente o pequeno inseto se perdeu do vôo, adentrando ao recinto histórico. A Painted Skimmer pauses on a perch in the middle of a Virginia saltmarsh, awash in a sea of green with the gentle grey clouds breaking through. A hundred yards behind him, the ocean pounds into a soft, pale beach, littered with angelwings and sea sponges. There are sandpipers dashing along the frothing edges of every wave, and a pod of inshore dolphins herds a school of baitfish against this littoral wall. A watersnake glides beneath the curled branches of a marsh elder, and a terrapin cruises between patches of Spartina in search of crabs. You cannot look directly at the sun, but you know an osprey is there, chirping away with a branch in its talons, making for a nest on a distant tower. Everything we see in nature is connected, as puzzle pieces that determine where all the others fit around them. If one goes missing, the surface is disrupted, and left incomplete, and less bountiful. When we were at "Lucky Hammock" on March 18, 2024, I noticed these two Halloween Pennant dragonflies mating. (In this spot, near Everglades National Park in Florida, there are always thousands of Halloween Pennants.) When I noticed them, I quickly maneuvered to get some shots. Later, when I was selecting photos to keep, I was surprised to see this scene, where the female seems to be asking for help from the male. I am not sure if anything happened, or if this is a normal step in the mating process, but it is interesting that one can see a disk of some sort at the end of the female's tail. 🇳🇱 Het afgelopen weekend vlogen er al heel wat libellen rond. De meeste nog kakelvers. Zo zag ik al meerdere imago’s van venwitsnuitlibel (Leucorrhinia dubia), smaragdlibel (Cordulia aenea), viervlek (Libellula quadrimaculata), bosbeekjuffer (Calopteryx virgo), weidebeekjuffer (Calopteryx splendens), variabele waterjuffer (Coenagrion pulchellum) en watersnuffel (Enallagma cyathigerum). • Sympetrum fonscolombii - Dardo de venas rojas Las hembras tienen un color ocre, con tonos verdosos y un dibujo lateral característico. Los machos en cambio, se ve una coloración muy intensa (aunque ligeramente más variable) entre tonos rojizos y naranjas. Es una especie de odonato anisóptero de la familia Libellulidae. 🇳🇱 De libellen zijn er erg vroeg bij dit jaar. Zeer uniek. Record na record wordt verbroken voor wat betreft vroegste imago ooit. Zo zijn er nu al 15 soorten waargenomen tot op heden, terwijl andere jaren de vuurjuffer nog amper rondvloog. Daarom vandaag ook maar eens op zoek gegaan naar uitsluiters en met succes! 8 kakelverse glassnijders (Brachytron pratense). Daarnaast enkele smaragdlibellen, lantaarntjes, tengere grasjuffers, vuurjuffers en een variabele waterjuffer. On March 18, 2024 we went to "Lucky Hammock", near Everglades National Park in south Florida to look for birds. During our early morning outing there I spotted this (female) Eastern Pondhawk dragonfly perched low in the reeds near a small pond, apparently contemplating the sunrise as it warmed up and dried itself off from the dew that had formed overnight. At the end of our (birding) trip to Thailand, on December 28, 2023, our guide, Nick Upton, drove us to the Bangkok airport, showing us some new bird species along the way. This next dragonfly is a male Common Scarlet (Crocothemis servilia). As the name suggest they are so common here. There were dozens of them perching on dried out twigs, branches and grass.
