She helped set up a mentoring system for British Rowing: "I encourage them to understand that the conversation is between the two of us, and it’s not advice. If we talk through an idea and they form a plan off the back of that, that’s their intention, it’s not “Fran said I should do this”. The latest in our education careers month comes from rower Rosamund Bradbury, now teaching in Holland: "In teaching you genuinely do feel like you’re making a difference. It’s a bit like rowing, when you have to be on the top of your game all the time, because most of what you do is judged. You can’t hide if you’re having a bad day, in sport. In teaching, you have to strive to be the very best all the time because otherwise the kids will pick you up on it; but also it’s their future that matters. If you do a better job and they achieve higher grades, that could completely change their life. And I’m responsible for that. "Also, a draw for me was that teaching has a very high degree of security. Having done rowing, where you’re never sure year to year about funding and selection, it is nice to know that even if the school closes, I can go somewhere else. I’ll always have a job – particularly teaching maths. Careers in education have a high degree of job security." And the next day one of the semi-professional teams reached out to me and it was a real blessing, to be honest, at that point in my life because it wasn’t full time pro, but the contract that I got offered was very good. "It was a lifeline! I didn’t want to go to London. I didn’t want to pack up and live that corporate life straight away. "I had no idea about Hong Kong whatsoever. But I was sort of saying to myself, even if it was a year, fine, it’s better than waiting around and doing nothing. And then when I was in the UK still, but I knew I was moving to Hong Kong, I then was having job interviews with companies in Hong Kong, to try and get things lined up for when I touched down and could hit the ground running. And at that point, I knew I was going to go play rugby. I knew I was going to live the other side of the world, which I was really excited for." "The whole experience was a huge whirlwind in Hong Kong, and I’ve now been here nearly four years, and no sign of leaving. In a business, you’re trying to find the people with very different skill sets and put them together; and you’ve got a broader range of personalities and experiences. "When you felt like the inmates were progressing, and really understanding something, that was such a high. Their life, attitude, motivation and wanting to do things differently. When I saw those little sparks, it gave me real hope for my job. Those were the highs. "The lows were when you’d see the huge range of emotions – especially with youngsters. There would be fighting in the day: alarm bells and assaults and fights. And they show this real hard, tough side. But then later they would be crying in their cells. And it was an emotional rollercoaster especially when I started, seeing that depth – of brokenness, discontent and instability." "When I was 18, I started working for ServiceMaster. I sort of fell into it by accident, but swiftly realized it was good hours as I also wanted time to train and play football. I was working for my boss at the time, but when I retired from football I’d really built a career doing it so I decided to buy the franchise from him, as he was looking to retire. The timing worked out well. "It hasn't been easy, there’s been ups and downs, but I wouldn’t do anything else. "Being someone who's sporty, that really helped me in in the work because I was used to hard work, routine and discipline. Even at semi-pro level, it’s a tough environment, people criticising you and that sort of thing, you've got to be quite thick skinned to be successful in it." "After sailing for Britain for more than a decade, after winning, losing, getting severely injured, recovering, sailing again, winning world, European and national titles, it was my time to retire. "My first business after retiring from the sports career was an athlete management agency specialising in underrepresented athletes. It was so much fun: the harder you worked, the more money you made. But more importantly, my first company was where I fine-tuned my time management, prioritization skills and learned a lot of lessons on start-up life. "I was fortunate to manage some amazing athletes. One of them was Ali Jawad PLY, who went to three Paralympic Games, won Paralympic silver, set 2 world records and much more. I was following Michael Owen pretty well, but unfortunately, I had all his injuries before he did. "I am now in business development and partnerships at (freelancer platform) Fiverr. A lot of athletes like to go into sales because they like the goal-orientated aspect. That’s something I enjoy. When you hit your targets it feels like you’ve smashed the ball into the back of the net: that’s why I enjoy it. But also, given my background is in a team sport, I enjoy building relationships with people. I do sales but I also help our partners to be successful on our platform. We are excited at LAPS to welcome a new member to our team! Jake Robinson has taken on the role of Marketing Executive following a career in professional football. Working alongside Head of Content and Marketing Annie Vernon, Jake will also complete a level 3 apprenticeship in marketing via the Cambridge Marketing College. After playing professionally for Brighton, Shrewsbury, Luton, Northampton and Torquay, Jake has been scoring goals on the non-league circuit for the past 7 years. He also holds the record as Brighton and Hove Albion’s youngest ever goal scorer. Currently playing for Worthing FC in the National League South, Jake said; “I’m delighted and grateful to be given this opportunity at LAPS. I was already using the app and the members area as I considered my future so this opening came at a perfect time. I understand the difficulties people face in transitioning out of sport, having suffered a serious injury myself recently. ‘Get ahead of the game’. To be honest, this is something that I have only really started to take seriously since my knee injury last year and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t regret starting sooner. Today I attended the ‘Ahead of the game’ event at Twickenham, which was put on by the team @laps.careers It was for current and former players to explore some options there are post-career, and to network with people/businesses outside of the bubble that us footballers live in. We always think as players that we’ll make it to 35 and hope to earn enough money to not have to worry about what will come after. But football can be a cruel game and is so unpredictable. We all see the stories of players struggling with that often dreaded transition out of the game, into the real world but still have the attitude of, “I’ll be okay, I’ll just cross that bridge when I come to it”. The harsh reality is that the vast majority of us WILL have to work when we stop playing. There’s no doubt that to have a career in the game you have to be dedicated and your focus has to be primarily on your football. However, there’s no reason why you can’t start planning for life after football, or do something you enjoy, alongside your career as a player. I have an idea of what I want to do, but I’m still not 100% on what path I will need to take to get to where I want to be. That’s why events like this one today are great for us as footballers. You don’t have to discover your career path post-football at 21, but you’ll be grateful when you’re 31, that you got the ball rolling. Speak to people, network, ask questions, do your own research and be open minded. Trust me when I say, your career flashes by. So whatever you do, please don’t wait until it’s too late to start planning, or thinking about life after football! 🪰⚽️ #aheadofthegame #transition #lifeafterprofessionalsport #laps
