Sadly my Mum, Elaine, passed away a few weeks before [this tapestry] was completed, but I am delighted to have this special memory of her to keep and share with our family. It was lovely to meet Melody (Loose Ends finisher) in person. My dear Mum had dementia and was unable to complete it. Melody took on the big task of finishing it. She did a wonderful job of locating the threads needed and matching the colours. “My son and daughter were 5 and 3 respectively when she was diagnosed. God blessed us with those 16 years to raise them together. Julie frequently started knitting projects and then became so frustrated when they became tangled. She did finish me a beautiful scarf which I still embrace and inhale and, with a neighbor’s help, she made herself a sweater. My daughter was married in 2022 and on 1/3/24, just gave birth to my first grandson. She has missed her mother terribly during the pregnancy and, much as I try, I can only be the best father, not hold a candle as a mother. I have my first @thelooseendsproject assignment! 💖 Someone had this cardigan stored away that their mother began long ago. (The 70s or 80s?) They needed someone to finish it, so now it is in my possession! There was no pattern or hook, so I took a few hours staring into the stitches and figured it out! It's a shell stitch cardigan that needs to have all pieces finished. Then I need to sew them all together, make a border, and add buttons. She was a passionate knitter, originally from Germany, making countless pairs of socks, sweaters and other handmade items primarily for others. She loved working with natural materials such as wool, cotton and silk. Long ago, while still living in southern Germany she dreamed of and nearly began a knitting shop in a half-timber house in a medieval town. Her life took her in other directions, namely marrying me and emigrating to Canada, but she never gave up knitting. She also had a stained glass home studio and enjoyed making music. She was a proficient banjo and guitar player. Sylvia died of cancer on October 11, 2023. She lives on in many ways such as her many projects, in light and how love is expressed in our family she had to leave behind. My wife began this vest for me after knitting socks for many friends and family. I believe Sylvia did not follow the pattern exactly but used it more as a guide. [Carolyn, my mom] was an artist her entire life. Her love was printmaking. She founded the @washingtonprintmakers in Washington DC in 1985. It is a cooperative gallery, still functioning. She loved to create with her hands, and knitting was one of her outlets. She would knit hats, scarves, and blankets for her grandbabies. My brothers have the shawls that she knitted when their children were born, so this is my little bit of Mum to keep and cherish.” “Mum (Ria) was diagnosed with liver cancer shortly after starting the project and although she was able to knit at first, the treatment that she received left her with ‘brain fog’ and she just found following the pattern too difficult. Mum was a skilled and enthusiastic knitter and all my life, I have been lucky enough to wear her creations - as have my two brothers and their five children. We have all the baby blankets she made and have pictures of us 3 wearing matching cable knit jumpers as, at the ages of 5, 8 & 9 our Mum and Dad walked us up Mount Snowdon. (The jumpers were passed down so I got t wear two, my younger brother all three!!) Finished a cross stitch project through Loose Ends, a non-profit that connects makers with folks whose loved one died while a project was in progress. This piece was started by a mom and will be given to a sibling as a b-day prezzie. This was my 1st Loose Ends Project Finishers project. I picked it up in mid-January and finished it yesterday. Before I shut it down, remember how I was asked by Shamika Sanders-Sykes aka @ynvs_pinkietuscadero to share 20 albums that influenced my taste in music, one album per day, for 20 consecutive days? Well, here's the fifth one, and nope - I ain't nominating a soul again today. Maybe tomorrow, LOL. 🤷🏽 Day 5: Loose Ends - "Zagora" (May 7th, 1986) Unlike the last one, I remember EXACKLY when I was exposed to this! This was an album my Mom picked up when we lived in the projects (The Bricks). I was just becoming a teenager, Hip-Hop, Dancehall, and House were taking over the world, and I was growing into my own identity, but lemme tell y'all - even though I had my own musical tastes, any music my Mom purchased, I was into it, too (I'll be listing more of her selections, LOL)! This was one of those albums! You played it from the beginning to the end - there are NO throwaway tracks on it! Back in the 80's the British Invasion was very real and acts like Soul II Soul and Loose Ends were bringing a unique brand of soul that was different from the American R&B of the time (we were pretty much caught up in the sounds of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, LA & Babyface, and Teddy Riley, to name a few). Produced by the iconic Nick Martinelli (you'd be surprised at how many of your faves he's produced), the sound was simultaneously classic and future at the same time - so much so that it STILL sounds fresh 38 years later! #LooseEnds #Zagora #zodiacthumpmusic Favorite "cut" - "Who Are You?" 🎧

✅ Done! This project for #looseends wasn’t particularly difficult on paper, but it’s taken me an entire year to finish. When I first accepted the project, my child was just mastering walking and very “easy” for their age. I was also convinced I would be laid off from work soon and thought I’d be able to knock this sweater out in a month. Well, my “easy” child quickly turned into a very mobile and curious toddler and I was fortunate enough to keep my job. This meant I had maybe 30 minutes to an hour every evening to knit after work, commuting home, cooking dinner, and spending some time with my toddler. I worked exclusively on this sweater save for a week break to participate in #spintogether. The back piece and part of the two front pieces were knit by the original knitter. The rest of the fronts, the sleeves, neckline and all the seaming were done by me over the year. There were also a number of dropped stitches hiding in the back and front panels that I repaired — all thankfully held in place pretty well by the mohair! The project is now drying on my blocking mats and I’m excited to mail it back to its home soon. Overall I learned a lot about myself and improved my craft as a knitter thanks to this project (matching someone else’s gauge on mohair is not for the faint of heart!). #looseendsproject #knittersgonnaknit #mohairsweater #mohaircardigan #handknitsweater

Betty loved two things: genealogy and quilting. She taught workshops for both. I knew her in her later years. When I visited regularly we’d talk about her two favourite things. When she was no longer able to see she wanted people who valued her craftsmanship and gave these to me. I’ve had them now for years. She passed away during COVID. Made some moon coasters since I’ll be in my car during the solar eclipse going to work. This has been in my inspo folder for quite sometime. And it lined up so well that I got to start it on the day of the solar eclipse. Can’t wait to clean out my car and put these in.
