Our research aims to help remove the barriers that face young women and girls for the upcoming #CreweYouthZone. Thank you @theyorkmix for sharing the news of the new area in Rowntree Park co-created with teenage girls. Together we designed and fundraised to create an area where teenage girls would feel welcome. Girls (and many boys) stated they wanted more facilities to encourage play, rather than sports facilities - the latter is often what councils and developers assume teenagers want. Itâs important we ask them! As it stands girlsâ use of parks drops, compared to boys, as they enter their teen years. As parks are so beneficial to physical and mental health and well-being, encouraging girls into parks is important first active healthy life styles. The focus was on creating a welcoming space, a place they can hang. Everyone is welcome to use the space, whilst respecting the original purpose. Itâs about inclusivity. Today we held a little opening party for the new area in Rowntree Park that was co created with teenage girls. A couple of years of engagement, designing & then seeking funding, but we did it! Top of the âwantsâ list were communal swings and social âinterestingâ seating - essentially play equipment for chatting. This is an area to feel welcome to âhangâ and just âbeâ! As it stands girlsâ use of parks drops, compared to boys, as they enter their teen years. As parks are so beneficial to physical and mental health and well-being, encouraging girls into parks is so important. The focus was on creating a welcoming space, a place they can hang. Everyone is welcome to use the space, whilst respecting the original purpose. Itâs about inclusivity. Today kids, and adults, of all ages have used the space - itâs been great to see. This is an area created by the community, for the community. The project has been created and led by myself, Abigail Gaines. I hope it shows that an individual can make a difference. Thank you to our local ward councillors for coming down, & general support of the project (including some funding). Also the council execs with parks under their remit came down too. One of the massive success stories of the âMake Space for Girlsâ in Rowntree Park Festival last year was basketball. Coach Ghada, from York Eagles, ran a range of sessions in the park. Many girls went on to join the club, and now they have three girls teams, not just one! Our research aims to help remove the barriers that face young women and girls for the upcoming #CreweYouthZone. For our third birthday we are celebrating the impact of Make Space for Girls all week. Some of our greatest impact happens where people have seen our message and research and then put it into practice themselves. At Rowntree Park in York, The Friends of Rowntree Park carried out research and engagement with teenage girls to make the park more welcoming for them. As well as facilities the group looked at ways to bring more teenage girls into the park. For the last couple of years, the Friendsâ have run a popular evening ânatureâ youth group for 10-16 year old girls in the woodland area - lots of hammocks, nature crafts and activities and campfire cooking. In June 2023, they launched a whole free month of activities for teenage girls including sports and exercise, arts and crafts, health and wellbeing, nature conservation and much more. This gave girls the chance to try new things, meet new people, and feel welcome in their local park. The programme went on to win the new GreenFlag Award for âBest initiative to engage and increase use of parks by women and girlsâ. Thanks to grant funding, the programme will return this summer. Itâs our third birthday this week and we are âcelebratingâ the last year of Make Space for Girls. Perhaps the biggest barrier which prevents teenage girls accessing public space is safety. Rethinking the MUGA⌠Itâs needed! The Camden Central Somers Town project sees architects, designers & youth groups working on inclusive spaces. In the design, itâs âOUTâ with the fenced MUGA, and âINâ with different types of play equipment and scales of seating. The seating scaled to suit different people, sizes of groups and even moods. As part of The Urbanists' Employee Ownership Trust, we have collectively decided to support two charities this year. One of our chosen charities is Make Space for Girls, which campaigns for better parks and public spaces designed with the safety of teenage girls in mind. As part of our support to this cause, MSFG recently kindly visited our Cardiff office to deliver a very insightful Continuing Professional Development (CPD) seminar hosted by co-founder and trustee Susannah Walker. This was a hybrid event, so staff members from our Cardiff and Bristol studios could benefit. The seminar's thought-provoking facts have enlightened us and sparked conversations of change within our team, motivating us to design spaces that truly cater to everyone's safety and comfort. Also, Francesca, one of our Senior Principal Designers, attended the recent Safe Spaces for Women and Girls Conference 2024. Several inspiring speakers were at this event, including Susannah Walker from MSFG, Dr Anna Barker from Safer Parks Guidance, and Karen Whybro from Met Sport Women's Safety. There were two workshops, one in the morning with 'Make Space for Girls' and the other in the afternoon with 'Our Streets Now.' Our commitment to supporting MSFG is not just a one-time event. Great to see that our submissions to the Greater London Authority Planning Committee has been included in their âShaping the Future London Planâ report, published today and that gender inclusivity is such an important part of their recommendations. We highlighted key findings from our ParkWatch Report, revealing that spaces designed for teenagers often prioritise male usage, leaving girls and women feeling excluded; 90 % of facilities designed for teenagers, such as skate parks and sports courts, are used predominantly by teenage boys and men. Sarah Considine from GLAâs Good Growth by Design Unit emphasised the importance of diverse spaces to prevent one group from dominating. The report identifies that although women and girls have diverse needs in the built environment, there are some common design features that can enhance safety and inclusivity for all women, regardless of background or age, from well-lit pathways to inclusive recreational areas. Today we loved engaging with teenage girls on what they want in their local parks. There is a very clear message on seating views- they want it, lots of it, and varied types of it!
