Moving toward the announcement of the top pick for the International Award for Public Art on May 25th, The IPA is will be highlighting projects from the shortlist for 2024. Title of Work: The Ñullest Wall Artist: Radi-K-L Bomb Shot Crew (RBS Crew) Region: Africa Location: Dakar, Sacré Coeur 3, Liberté 6 sur la Voie de dégagement Nord (VDN) Year: 2020 Researcher: Reine Bassene The fresco named The Ñullest Wall is still visible on the northern corridor of Dakar. The route is a passage for tens of thousands of Senegalese every day. The fresco named The Ñullest Wall is still visible on the Northern corridor of Dakar. The route is a passage for tens of thousands of Senegalese every day. The piece was originally made to remind Senegalese people of the messages of the Black rights advocate Stokely Carmichael also known as Kwame Ture (a key figure in the Black Panther Party). Additionally, the work was also intended - above all - to highlight an essential value in the collective's approach: Self-determination. Interestingly, realisation of The Ñullest Wall coincided with the assassination of George Floyd in the United States in 2020. The realisation of the fresco also saw the participation of guest artists; Zeinixx Lfdm, Mystik de Am-o-niak Kru, Baye Ndiaga Diouf, Beenoush all evolving in the Senegalese Hip-Hop artistic milieu. Through works portraying Harriet Tubman, Cheikh Anta Diop, Kemi Seba, Omar Blondin Diop, Cheikh Ibra Fall, Winnie Mandela, the collective sought to show what commitment and determination can bring to a community. Over a century old, the White Bay Power station stood empty after being decommissioned in 1984. It is now open to the public for the first time. It is currently being used as a venue to display art for the Biennale of Sydney - including the art-after-dark events. The venue has amazing light with windows several stories high, lots of scaffolding electric machinery from a bygone era still remaining; giving it an edgy, gritty, industrial charm - one can see why it was chosen to film parts of, "Matrix Reloaded" and the 'Valley of the Grey Ashes' in the Great Gatsby. It feels as if the power station is slowly waking up from a long slumber and it will be interesting to see both how the space will be transformed in the future and how its heritage is conserved. Public Space became a runway yesterday for the end of @fashrev_at. In second hand clothes from @endlosfesch we moved and stopped, starting from @mqwien towards @mariahilferstrasse, became Models and shopwindowdolls brought to life; promoting the idea that clothes are for the people - wearing, producing and designing them - never the other way around. The subject in any industry should be supported by the object. Creating a sustainable environment for people, nature and ultimately this one world in which we all live together. @fash_rev is an organisation supporting reuse, recycling, sustainability, certification of companies and protections for garment workers in the fashion industry. By making one of the main shopping streets of Vienna a public runway I felt like bringing the idea to the place for asking „who made my clothes“. People who passed us by looking at the signs reread the question - starting their own thought process. Rooted in the rich tapestry of Qatar's modern history, spanning from 1962 to 1987, this project ingeniously transforms iconic architectural landmarks into interactive play structures and functional benches. Drawing inspiration from pivotal buildings like the Ministry of Information & National Theatre Complex, Dawood's creation stands as a testament to Qatar's remarkable journey toward modernity and independence. In close collaboration with esteemed local architect Fatma Al Sehlawi, this project delves into the architectural and social narratives that have shaped Qatar's identity. Ofri Cnaani ( @ofricnaani ) | ‘The Space between Us: Somatic Knowledge and New Techno-Spatial Scopes’ | 5–17 August 2024 The increasing complexity of the body as a data subject within the urban terrain constantly creates a need for the critical terminologies of the somatic to be reconsidered. This studio explores how we can use embodied listening practices to attune to the evolving network-based spatial scopes that shape our social and political urban environment and imagine new forms of matter-body-data alliances. Like a public laboratory, the studio class brings forward the possibility of using embodied, auditory, and visual tools to provoke the prevailing data-centric norms of urban living. Through experimental encounters, the course aims to negotiate the complex relations between body, data, and public space and develop a set of social technologies to expose the temporalities of current techno-political building entanglements. By employing embodied listening, we will pay close attention to how our bodies are regulated by the emerging data landscape and develop personal projects that imagine possibilities of anticipatory spatial forms as enduring spaces for productive interruption. Public transport is one of the main keys to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 (that is tomorrow) and to achieving carbon neutrality in 2050 by respecting the European Green Deal. Modern urban planning which since the 1960s has caused horizontal urban sprawl and maintained our dependence on the automobile must today give way to the city of proximity, dense, green, and united which advocates shared urban mobility. Let us remember: The denser a city is, the less energy it consumes! These new mobilities are based on four pillars: green and carbon-free energies, biobased materials in all vehicles, eco-construction of multimodal hubs at city entrances, and digital infrastructures. Finally, it is vital to make sharing public space a happy and creative experience. It is proven that the more public transport traffic is shared and dedicated to its own site for each type of mobility, the more fluid and efficient the movement of city dwellers is, and the more their safety and comfort are respected.
