Lal Kot - First Fort of Delhi made by Maharaja Anangpal Tomar II After the end of Pandavas, who are credited with establishing the first city of Delhi – Indraprastha – the area stood abandoned for more than a thousand years. From the wilderness that it became, Raja Anangpal of Tomar clan carved out his own Capital Dhillika in the area now known as ‘Mehrauli,’ in the 8th century. By 11th century, it grew to a stage that a strong fortification became inevitable. Raja Anangpal’s successor, and namesake, Raja Anangpal Tomar II built a strong fort to protect the city. His fortification was called ‘Lal Kot’ – the first fort of Delhi, also referentially called the first Red Fort of Delhi. Its wall stands till date in Sanjay Van, the medicinal forest spread between the present day Mehrauli and Jawaharlal Nehru University. Later in the time of Prithviraj Chauhan it was further developed and named Qila Rai Pithora Jai Gopal Ji Ki 🚩 . . . . #rajputana #rajput #mansinghtomar #mp07 #rajasthan #rajputanagwalior #gwaliorfort #chambal #attitude #marwar #rajputi #royal #culture #rajasthani #thakur #bannaji #india #rajputanaswag #instagram #morena #rajputs #gwalior #mewar #rajputitude #rajputanastyle #rajputiposhak #madhyapradesh #rajputboy #instagood #maharanapratap

Mrignayani By Sayantika Biswas “Mrignayani”- neither the emporium nor the hotel. Google searches and journal sites were completely blank when this name was typed in. “Mrignayani Queen” on Google took me directly to Man Singh Tomar’s page where a small portion mentioned her as his spouse. A part of her being kept as a secret can be attributed to the fact that she was a lower caste woman. Man Singh Tomar, being a high-caste royal family member, entered into an inter-caste union with Mrignayani. Since then, she has been almost wiped out, treated as a ‘shameful’ part of Rajput history. The story of Mrignayani follows that Man Singh saw her taming two buffalos in the forest while he was on a hunting expedition. Falling for her bravery and beauty, he proposed her hand in marriage. Traditional oral histories speak of Mrignayani as the ninth queen of Man Singh Tomar. The other eight queens did not accept her because of her lower caste. Feminism in the medieval times came in small instances of breaking the social norms. Mrignayani was a radical in her own terms- as she put three important conditions to Man Singh for marriage. She refused to cover her face or follow purdah system after marriage. A separate palace was to be built for her with fresh water from river Rai. Her intelligence made her an important adviser in the court of Man Singh. Man Singh followed all her conditions and also made her the magnificent Gujari Mahal at the foot of the Gwalior Fort. Raag Gujari Todi was inspired by her. She was a patron of Hindustani Classical Music and is said to have taken her lessons from Haridas. Most of these are tales heard from guides and locals. Most of it has gotten lost in the ‘dialogue between past and present’. But what could be gathered from these stories that, Mrignayani was a strong personality who challenged patriarchy during the medieval times. A queen who has been lost to history. ( Note: The above picture a sculpture from Gujari Mahal. No proper image or sculpture of Mrignayani has been found yet. ) #mrignayani #caste #mansinghtomar #gwalior #queen #lost #rajput #history #womeninhistory

Man Mandir Palace, Gwalior Fort, built between 1486-1516 AD by the Tomar king, Man Singh Tomar. Also known as the Painted Palace, the palace is made of sandstone and is known for its turquoise, green, and yellow tiles. Various publications describe the palace as an instance of the coming together of medieval and "old Hindu architecture". According to Sheetal Vyas (writing for Outlook India magazine), after the Gwalior Fort was captured by the Mughals, the palace was converted into a dungeon. I have an old old connection with Gwalior Fort, having visited it for the first time in 2000, when I was ten years old. Visiting Gwalior again in 2023, I found that much of the city has changed. But the fort remains as it always has, towering over the city and ancient and magnificent in its beauty. I couldn't find more about the architecture of the palace and I'd be happy if anyone wants to add more details here! #gwalior #gwaliorfort #mansinghtomar #manmandir #gwaliortourism #madhyapradesh #madhyapradeshtourism #paintedpalace #medievalarchitecture #tilework #staringatceilings #indiatourism #fortsofindia #fortsofmadhyapradesh #indianpalace #indianfortsandpalaces #indianforts

LAXMAN GATE, Gwalior Fort. 9th Century AD or older. As per the limited records, this Gate was built by Laxman Pal, a Kachhwaha Rajput Ruler, related with Kacchapaghata Dynasty of Gwalior. This was prior to their conquest of Amer from Meenas, and establishment of Kingdom of their Kingdom in Dhundhar region of Rajasthan. They were tributaries of great Gurjar Pratihār Samrājya (Empire) which used Gwalior Fortnas a main base during the reign of famous Emperor, Mihir Bhoj, who was also called as the "Guardian of the Wall of Hind" when Arabs were attempting an invasion beyond Sindhu River of Sindh. Before reaching this gateway there is a small temple cut out on the solid rock, which is known as Chaturbhuj Mandir, dedicated to Lord Vishnu built by Pratihār Ruler Mihir Bhoj. Gwalior Fort is probably the only the grand Fortress of Bharat to have ruled by most major Empires of the last one and half millennium, including 1. Gurjar-Pratihār, 2. Sākā (Indo-Scythian), 3. Huna (Alcon-Huns), 4. Kachhwaha Rajputs, 5. Tomar Rajputs, 6. Mughal Empire, 7. Maratha Empire, 8. The glory of the Gwalior Fort is epitomized in the resplendent Man Mandir. Raja Man Singh Tomar obviously, heightened a tradition of building, which had been refurbished for a century by his ancestors. The dynasty had been founded by Raja Vir Singh Deo, after the hold of Tughlaq Sultanate loosened, through the death of Feroz Shah Tughlaq. Then the Tomar Rajputs who ruled from 1394 AD to 1528 AD, all had built and rebuilt on the same site as Man Mandir Palace. Raja Man Singh Tomar was inspired by living on the high spots of God's earth in tune with the elements, so that, from the doors and windows of his abode, he could be aware of his place in the universe- between particular space as part of the total space. Thus the sense of form of the palace, which is between heaven and earth, solid yet ethereal. Here the Raja could retreat into the dark corridors of abysses; or ascend to the top terraces, to gaze at early morning sun and te glittering evening stars, lanterns of heavens, part of thr galaxies guessed to be beyond the earth by Aryabhatta and Bhaskara. #theperspectiveenigma #manmadirpalace #mansinghtomar #rajputarchitecture #gwaliorkila #gwalior_fort #gwaluorcity #gwaliorofficial #gwaliorfortview #gwaliorfort❤️ #gwaliorcityvibes #gwaliordiaries👣 #gwalior_wale #manmandirpalace #gwalior_diaries #madhyapradesh #madhyapradeshdiaries #mp

Man Mandir Palace in Gwalior Fort, inspired by Hindu and Medieval architecture, is unquestionably stunning, made out of sandstone with lovely patterns on hued tiles. Its historical significance is quite striking. It’s the main palace inside the fort premises. I was captivated by the tales. It was like walking down the lanes of history, a leap into the past and reliving the stories. Built by King Man Sing Tomar in the 15th century, Man Mandir is also known as Painted Palace or Chit Mandir. Raja Man Singh was recognized as one of the most celebrated aficionadi of art and music. He would see performances in the music hall with his queens and admire the artists. The palace echoed with soulful music. #theperspectiveenigma #manmadirpalace #mansinghtomar #rajputarchitecture #gwaliorkila #gwalior_fort #gwaluorcity #gwaliorofficial #gwaliorfortview #gwaliorfort❤️ #gwaliorcityvibes #gwaliordiaries👣 #gwalior_wale #manmandirpalace #gwalior_diaries #madhyapradesh #madhyapradeshdiaries #mp

Remembering #Gwalior ruler Man Singh #Tomar on his 536th jayanti. Tomar built Gujari Mahal as a palace for her, as a monument of love for Mrignayani. Tradition has it that as a queen, Mrignayni, was very beautiful and courageous woman. Tomar was a great warrior and great patron of music. One of the nine gems of his court was the Hindustani classical musician Tansen. He was patron of Dhrupad genre from Hindustani Classical #Music. #MansinghTomar

Sasbahu Temple, Gwalior. Also called the Sas-Bahu Mandir, Sas-Bahu Temples, Sahasrabahu Temple or Harisadanam temple, is an 11th-century twin temple in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. Near the Gwalior Fort and dedicated to Vishnu in his Padmanabha form, like most Hindu and Jain temples in this region, it is mostly in ruins and was badly damaged from numerous invasions and Hindu-Muslim wars in the region. It was built in 1093 by King Mahipala of the Kachchhapaghata dynasty, according to an inscription found in the larger of the twin temple. The twin temples are situated in the Gwalior Fort. The twin temple, like elsewhere in India, has locally been called Sasbahu temple. The word Sasbahu means "mother-in-law, bride" or "a mother with her daughter-in-law", an association that implies their being together and interdependent. The Sas temple is typically the larger older temple of the twin. The Gwalior Sasbahu temple follows this style, but both temples are dedicated to Vishnu. Only the Sas temple has survived in some form, the Bahu temple is a shell structure of the original one storey with a highly ornate door frame and its defaced wall reliefs surviving. The remnants of the Bahu temple at Gwalior suggest that it may have been a smaller version of the Saas temple. #Gwalior #GwaliorFort #FortsOfIndia #TemplesOfIndia #HinduTemple #Hinduism #Jainism #Bhumija #BhumijaArchitecture #MadhyaPradesh #MadhyaPradeshTourism #TheHeartOfIncredibleIndia #ManSinghTomar #KachchhapaghataDynasty #NorthIndia #Tomar #HinduArchitecture #Heritage #GibraltarOfIndia #Incrediblelndia #Pixel4a #Google #ComputationalPhotography #GooglePixel #GooglePixel4a #SmartphonePhotography #ShotOnPixel #TeamPixel

In 15th century build by Raja Mansingh Tomar for his Gujar Queen Mrignayani, Gujari Mahal is a monument of love.Raja Mansingh’s relationship with Mrignayani was special. Not only was he smitten by her beauty, but he also shared her passion for music. Consumed by his devotion to the love of his life, he built the Gujari Mahal. He even dedicated a classical raga to her beautiful Gujar wife which he called Gujari Todi. Mrignayani learned music from Haridas, the celebrated musician in Man Singh’s court. Raja Man Singh and Mrignayani would enjoy music performances together in an underground music hall in Gujari Mahal. #musicology #music #indianmusic #art&culture #mansinghtomar

I love the detective work of being an art historian. This was a great moment when I found surviving fragments of early 16th C wall painting high up in a chhatri (domed kiosk) on the roof of the Man Mandir palace in Gwalior fort. Look out for my video in the next post to find out more. #ursulaweekes #manmandir #gwalior #gwaliorpalace #mansinghtomar #wallpainting #indianwallpainting #sultanateindia #ornament #rajput #gwaliorfort #arthistory #discovery #ontheroof #chhatri #chatri #indianornament

The glory of the Gwalior Fort is epitomized in the resplendent Man Mandir. Raja Man Singh Tomar (Chandravanshi Rajput Dynasty) obviously, heightened a tradition of the building, which had been refurbished for a century by his ancestors. Raja Man Singh Tomar was inspired by carvesai character of the Fort palace and living on the high spots of God's earth in tune with the elements, so that, from the doors and windows of his abode, he could be aware of his place in the universe- between particular space as part of the total space. Thus the sense of form of the palace, which is between heaven and earth, solid yet ethreal. Here the Raja (King) could have retrieved to the dark corridors of abyss; or ascend to the top terraces, to glaze at early morning sun 🌄 and the glittering evening stars 🌃🌟, lanterns of Heaven, part of the galaxies calculated to be beyond the earth by Aryabhatta and Bhaskara. Raja Man Singh's most mythical palace may have been a provisory for happiness he derived on the terraces through the musical soirees. #theperspectiveenigma #manmadirpalace #mansinghtomar #rajputarchitecture #gwaliorkila #gwalior_fort #gwaluorcity #gwaliorofficial #gwaliorfortview #gwaliorfort❤️ #gwaliorcityvibes #gwaliordiaries👣 #gwalior_wale #manmandirpalace #gwalior_diaries #madhyapradesh #madhyapradeshdiaries #mp

@mpheartofindia #mpheartofindia

So here it is...the fragmentary wall painting inside the dome of the chhatri. It’s stunning...definitely informed by sultanate/persianate ornament but with wonderful figures of dancing women that still have touches of polychrome. You can see their long waist sashes falling between their legs. They compare closely with stone tracery elsewhere in the palace (see pic 3)... so it’s safe to date this wall painting to the Tomar period of the palace c. 1489-1516. #gwalior #gwaliorfort #madhyapradesh #wallpainting #indianornament #ornament #indiandancing #ursulaweekes #indianarchitecture #manmandir #mansinghtomar #indiatourism

GWALIOR FORT Gwalior Fort (Gwāliiyar Qila) is a hill fort near Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. The fort has existed at least since the 10th century, and the inscriptions and monuments found within what is now the fort campus indicate that it may have existed as early as the beginning of the 6th century. The fort has been controlled by a number of different rulers in its history. The present-day fort consists of a defensive structure and two main palaces, Gujari Mahal and Man Mandir, built by Man Singh Tomar (reigned 1486–1516 CE). The Gujari Mahal palace was built for Queen Mrignayani. It is now an archaeological museum. The second oldest record of "zero" in the world was found in a small temple (the stone inscription has the oldest record of the numeric zero symbol having a place value as in the modern decimal notation), which is located on the way to the top. The inscription is around 1500 years old #gwaliorfort #gwalior #madhyapradesh #manmandir #mansinghtomar #indianforts #india #madhyapradeshtourism #incredibleindia #gujarimahal #indian_grandeur #hillfort #queenmrignayani #indianhistory #indiatourism

अतिथि देवो भव : Gwalior fort/palace, built by Raja Man Singh Tomar between 1486 and 1517 inside the complex of Gwalior Fort. A splendid display of Hindu architecture, the palace has 2 open courtyards bordered by apartments on two floors. This four-storeyed palace has large rooms, wherein some were venues for musical concerts, the others were for the royal ladies to sit and enjoy the music. The blue paintings on the walls with touch of green and gold look striking. There are 2 underground or basement floors with circular cells. They were used as prisons. The palace is also surrounded by other monuments like Jehangir Mahal, Shah Jahan Mahal and the Gujari Mahal. A special sound and light show is organized every evening for the visiting tourists at the palace.
