8:19am on Monday 29th of #April2024. An incomplete but magnificent #22degreehalo encircles the morning Sun over #Shepparton! I snapped this pic just outside the #sheppartonharnessracingclub and #sheppartongreyhoundracingclub in #Kialla, just as I was arriving from Melbourne. Would’ve been interesting if the contrails I saw earlier from planes flying north to Queensland had’ve lingered long enough! ✈️ The cloudband responsible for this #ringaroundthesun was due to a cold front that was moving across #Victoria, #Australia that day, but most of the accompanying rainfall was on and south of the Great Dividing Range. This print, now on display in our RED VARIANT exhibition @pestoriussweeneyhouse, originally formed part of Melbourne artist Peter Tyndall’s ‘Screaming Teens’ exhibition, which opened at Brisbane’s Institute of Modern Art (IMA) on 1 April 1980, i.e. almost 44 years ago. In 2010, Peter reconfigured the installation for MELBOURNE-BRISBANE: punk, art and after, a large exhibition that I organised for Melbourne’s Ian Potter Museum of Art and for which I commissioned John Nixon to do the exhibition design. Photo 2 is an installation view of the IMA exhibition in April 1980 (📸 Richard Stringer). Photo 3 shows the reconfigured artwork while photo 4 shows my contextualising wall text (📸 Viki Petherbridge). For those who may struggle to read the text from the photo, below is an excerpt: “April Fools Day 1980 marks the opening of an exhibition by Melbourne artist Peter Tyndall at Brisbane’s Institute of Modern Art. Titled ‘A Person Looks At A Work Of Art (Puppet Culture Framing System)’, it is an early example of the strong Minimal-Conceptual and, at times, overtly political focus of John Nixon’s IMA program in the early 1980s. Tyndall’s exhibition is also an early sign of the critical tension between art and popular music that would come to define Nixon’s activities in Brisbane at this time. Tyndall’s ‘Screaming Teens Mob Paintings’ newspaper day bill recalls and redirects the hysteria surrounding the public reception of The Beatles et al in the 1960s. Images taken between 4:00pm and 5:40pm on Tuesday 2nd of #May2023. The northern edge of the pre-frontal #lowpressuretrough which swept across #Victoria, #Australia managed to produce a some rather impressive #thunderstorm cells across the northern plains, a couple of which sideswiped me at #Shepparton! Based on the structure it’s highly likely they were supercellular, but they weren’t intense enough to be considered severe. While #lightning was detected within them, I didn’t hear so much as a rumble of #thunder! ☹️ I did see a flicker of lightning near nightfall as the storms retreated to the east, so that counts for something I guess. 🙂 Managed a sprinkle of #heavyrain though and it was quite #windy as the storms brushed by; the afternoon sun shining on the precip core made me think I was in for some #hail as well but alas it didn’t happen. I also sighted a couple of suspect #funnelclouds, and a few faint #rainbows too. Out for a nice #eveningwalk through #Shepparton last week on Tuesday 10th of #May2022. In time for sunset. 🌅 On my ever-growing bucket list is to travel the full length of Highway A39 from #SeymourVic north to #Toowoomba, most likely as part of a #melbournebrisbane road trip! It’s very rare for me to travel along any length of Highway A39, and even then it’s seldom further north than Shepparton, occasionally as far as #Congupna. I have gone as far north as #Tocumwal on one occasion though, where the #NewellHighway begins on its 1000km+ northward journey through #newsouthwales to #queensland! So this is CSIRO’s famous radio telescope, featured in the 2000 movie, The Dish, starring Sam Neill. The structure, smack bang in the middle of sheep paddocks in Parkes is now 10,000 times more sensitive than when it was built in 1961.
