Of all the strange, contrived, phoned-in and far-out attempts we’ve covered by American automakers to combat the onslaught of European luxury cars in the 80’s and early 90’s, perhaps none was so bizarre as the 1988 Merkur Scorpio. The Scorpio was Ford’s attempt to give its Lincoln-Mercury dealers a more suave, contemporary, European executive car to try and retain some of the younger customers fleeing their showrooms for the likes of BMW and Audi. In essence, Ford decided that the best way to stop people ditching a Mercury for the Germans was to give them a German Mercury. This was in an era prior to “global” cars, when different regions of the world got very different vehicle lineups from the same parent company. Ford of Europe had, at the time, a large upmarket 5-door liftback family car called the Scorpio/Granada (depending on country) that was built in Cologne, Germany. Ford quickly set about getting the car federalized for the U.S., and in 1988 it joined another Ford of Europe car, the Sierra (rebadged as the XR4Ti) in some 800 Lincoln-Mercury showrooms under the brand name “Merkur”. And yes, Merkur -pronounced Mair-coor- is just the German word for “Mercury”. While in Europe the Scorpio could be had with a smattering of 4 and 6-cylinder gas and diesel engines, the Merkur only came in one flavor: the range-topping 2.9 liter V6. It sent its 144hp to the rear wheels via either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic, and with the latter, 0-60 would take you over 10 seconds. Once there, however, the Scorpio did actually manage the sort of road manners you might expect from a German car. Unlike virtually every other FoMoCo product at the time, the Scorpio came standard at all 4 corners with ABS, disc brakes, and independent suspension. Interiors were also on par with other period premium cars - you even got some power adjustments for the rear seats. Sadly, most Americans didn’t want to pay up to $70k (inflation adjusted) for a car with a weird name at a Mercury dealer. Ford hoped to sell 15,000 Merkur Scorpios a year. In the end, they sold just over 22,000…but it took nearly 3 years to do so, at which point the fledgling Merkur brand was quickly discontinued.

The 80s called.... #matchboxworld Ford Sierra XR4i found recently...the #fordsierra was released at the end of 1982 replacing the Cortina so logically in 1983 Matchbox replaced their MB55 Ford Cortina with a Sierra XR4I. The XR4i version had a 2.8 injected V6 engine and unique 3 door bodyshell with 3 windows each side (rather than the 2 window 'standard' 3 door design) as well as a distinctive bi-plane rear spoiler, the US market Merkur XR4Ti used a 'federalised' version of this bodyshell, but with a turbocharged 4-cyl rather than the V6...I think the unique 'Ford Sierra' branded packaging was only used on this white version in 1983 (@davidjtilley did an excellent article on @lamleygroup about this model a week or so ago) before reverting to the standard window box design for '84 when the model changed to silver with red 'XR4i' livery. I think it was fairly unusual for Matchbox to make 'event' packaging like this, especially compared to arch-rivals Corgi who had all sorts of TV/film licences going on (and had also managed to get their Ford Sierra model in the shops in a special box by Christmas '82). 1988 Merkur XR4Ti - I have this very unequivocal hatchback today for #obscuremonday. No, I didn’t misspell Mercury, I’m just translating it to German. The Merkur brand was created by Ford in 1986 and it was meant to market European Fords in the United States. The first car to be sold under this new Ford brand was the XR4Ti, a rebadged Ford Sierra XR4i. Ford spent $50 million dollars on making it road legal in the United States, so the stakes were very high for it. It had a 2.3L engine that generated 175 horsepower 195 lb-ft of torque with the five-speed manual. The Merkur brand was a failure, with the XR4Ti and the Scorpio being completely forgotten in today’s America. These had a dual rear wing, but only the 86-87 models were equipped with it. This example had no registration records after 2002, which means it was sitting for more than 20 years. Finally got to see this guy in person. Is the internet sick of this car yet? I know I'm not. This Merkur was done up to the nines by @jh_restorations right across the street from where I work. There's always cool cars over there, but I love seeing the interesting things they come up with for SEMA builds and this one has me hooked. A wonderful surprise whilst carspotting yesterday, an '87 Merkur XR4Ti, one of my all-time favorite '80s cars. This one looks like it hasn't moved in quite some time; I should probably stop back to inquire about it, or at least get some better pics (posed with Le Celica or Impulse of course). At the time, everyone and their brother needed to drive down this narrow street so these were the best pics I could muster. 1986 Merkur XR4Ti 2024 is off to a great start with this rare Ford Sierra based Merkur. Unfortunately, one post away from 2,000 posts. I now know of two XR4Ti's in town that are laid up. The other one is one that I have known of for over a decade. "Maer-koor" is the pronounciation. It means, "Mercury" in German. And Germany is where these were assembled These had one engine choice, a 2.3L turbocharged Lima I4 paired with either a 5-speed T-9 manual or a 3-speed C3 automatic. Flash Back! In 1996 I took possession of my first ever import. A rehab project known as the 1986 Mercury Merkur XR4ti. Imported from Ford Europe this was the Americanized Ford Sierra XR4ti. Sierra sound familiar? It should. It's famously the detuned iteration of the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth rally car 😳. Truly ahead of it's time for America. Imagine this: a European rear wheel drive sports car with a 2.3L fuel injected 4cylinder turbocharged engine. All this in 1985. Formula sound familiar? It should. America is littered with turbocharged 4cylinders. This unique futuristic endeavor would be imported to the United States from 1985-1989. Then Ford Europe head Bob Lutz proposed the idea of bring the Sierra XR4ti to the U.S. under Lincoln-Mercury badge to compete with luxury brand BMW's 3 series and then SAAB's 900. Ford CEO at the time Pete Peterson approved. So begin the process of importing the German built coupe pronounced "mare-coor". In German "Merkur" means Mercury. Hilarious considered in America it was essentially called the Mercury Mercury...lol. Oh Ford! Instead of working to adapt the European Sierra's V-6 to American emissions Ford chose to either choose the Mustang SVO 2.3L turbo four with the intercooler removed (great idea right? Turbo with no intercooler?) or the Mustang GT's 5.0L V8. Ford engineers couldn't get the heavier V8 to work with the suspension so the 2.3L turbo won out. In the end this gave the 3000 lbs coupe 175hp and 200 lb-ft of torque. 145hp w/ 3spd auto. With a MotorTrend tested 0-60 run of 8.3 secs, the Merkur outran both the European Sierra and the many V8's of the day. Ford had lofty goals of selling 20,000 units per year @ $16,361 ($43,998 in todays dollars). In the end the only moved 42,372 units over the 4yr run. 1987 Merkur XR4ti w/ 43k miles. 5spd turbo Final year of the dual-plane rear wing! Bolstered sport seats Garaged, enthusiast owned, and bone stock downside - the car was stolen in the early 90s (like many Sierras...), and was therefore given a rebuilt title Seller asking $12k - Located in CA 175 hp/200 ft lbs 0-60 in 7.7 sec The XR4ti was hand-built in Germany and brought to America under the name Merkur (German for “Mercury”). It was based on Ford’s European Sierra, whose development included consulting from racer Jackie Stewart Bob Lutz (Ford Europe Chairman) was determined to bring the Sierra to the US to compete with other imports, but there were a few hurdles he had to overcome For one, the Sierra’s V6 couldn’t meet U.S emissions requirements. It was found that the emissions equipment would choke the V6 so much that it made more sense to use a different engine. The 5.0L V8 from the Mustang was considered, but it was too heavy – it upset the balance of the chassis. It was decided to use the turbocharged 2.3L 4 cyl from the Mustang SVO, which made more power than the Sierra’s original V6 The SVO engine is internally unchanged for the XR4ti – the only notable difference is the lack of an intercooler in the Merkur. Also, the entire drivetrain in the Merkur was modified to produce less NVH than in the Mustang, as this was sold as a "premium" hatchback Also, the XR4ti uses an IRS instead of a live axle found in the SVO Overall, the XR4 is over 200 lbs lighter than the SVO (2,920 lbs vs 3,140) The Sierra/XR4 were actually intended to be front wheel drive cars, had Ford been financially stable enough to build an all-new FWD platform. Budget cuts meant Ford had to stick with an existing front engine/RWD layout – this was heavier and less fuel efficient than the new FWD setups that everyone else was using To make up for the MPG deficit, Ford pushed for extensive wind tunnel testing to make this car as aerodynamic as possible. The end result was a drag coefficient of only .33, which was sublime – in comparison, the low-slung '84 Corvette has a CD of .34 Would you keep it stock? What do you think about this Restomod Merkur XR4TI built by @jh_restorations? Do you even know what that is?? This German built Ford from the 80’s is the coolest thing I saw at @myprishow! Love that they used the 2.3L Ecoboost to power this thing as a tribute to the 2.3L Pinto engine it originally came with. This is the platform that @amsperformance was originally based on when we started out, even before the Mitsubishi Eclipse and Eagle Talon! A short lived ford brand. This 1989 Merkur Xr4ti is not only rare but the closest thing we got to the ford sierra. Power comes from a 2.3 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder (same engine from the pinto and mustang SVO I believe) making 170 horsepower and 144 ibs ft of torque and sends that power through a 5speed manual transmission and it’s rear wheel drive.
