Maharishi x Crazysmiles Michael Lau “Gardener” exhibition 1/500 Tee This Tee is from the 2003 Gardener exhibition which was a collaboration between Hardy Blechman’s Maharishi and Michael Lau’s Crazysmiles. The first photo shows Hardy Blechman (founder of Maharishi) in a headstand which mirrors the inside label of the tee. Blechman’s Pacifist designs showcase military inspiration to detach it from its negative connotations whilst promoting ethical production and manufacture. Crazysmiles collaborated with Maharishi to showcase the Gardener collection created by Michael Lau at the Blink Gallery in London from March 28th - April 26th 2003 which is where this tee, with the original box and tags was purchased. [NIGO goes to studio of Michael Lau, the man who made figures‘ heads, bodies and even clothes by hand] After the editorial department of [Relax] magazine received Michael Lau’s gorgeous figures from Hong Kong in the spring of 1999, Michael Lau‘s studio became the most wanted place to visit during the trip to Hong Kong for the [Relax] editorial department and NIGO. At that time, Michael Lau also expressed his love for [Relax] magazine because he thought that there were no magazines in Hong Kong at that time with as exquisite layout as [Relax]. Michael Lau, who graduated from the First Institute of Art and Design in 1992, originally majored in art courses in painting. It was not until 1999 that he came up with the idea of turning characters in two-dimensional paintings into three-dimensional figures, and here was the beginning of the story of “Gardener”. At that time, Michael had produced about 100 figures, all made of clay, and they were all completed in a very short period of time. This shocked and impressed NIGO and others a lot. However, because the figures available for sale at that time had been sold out in the previous exhibition held at the Hong Kong Arts Center, Michael specially sent an extra figure from the studio to NIGO, which made NIGO extremely happy about it. “Originality” was a concept that Michael mentioned most during the communication with NIGO and others. Just as he insists on doing what he loves and believes in, each figure he created also had its own name and unique character. These contents made NIGO fully feel Michael‘s pride as an artist and not just a craftsman. The pair that was released for retail is a yellow and red colorway. This sample pair, never released publicly, is finished in white leather with red accents. The design features many of the same unique details as the general release such as "CHINA" on both tongues, a sun stitched on the sides, and Beijing BMX 20-08 on the left and right heels. The midsole also features an arrowed bike track.
