Released on this day in 1973. “Red Rose Speedway” is the 2nd album by Paul McCartney and Wings and the 4th by McCartney since leaving the Beatles. Features the hit, “My Love.” The album was released after the poor commercial success of McCartney’s previous album, “Wild Life,” (a great album.) Red Rose contains the smash hit “My Love.” In early 1972, Paul McCartney expanded Wings to a 5 piece band, adding another guitarist, and to began touring with the group. They spent several months on the road across Europe, beginning with a tour of British universities. “Red Rose Speedway” was initially planned as a double album, and McCartney decided to include some unreleased songs that had originally been recorded during the Ram sessions prior to the formation of Wings. Two of those songs, “Get on the Right Thing” and “Little Lamb Dragonfly”, appeared on the final album. Producer Glyn Johns was invited to produce the recording sessions, but left after only a few weeks due to disagreements with McCartney. At the start of the sessions McCartney asked Johns to not think of him as Paul McCartney but rather just as “the bass player in the band” but then he wasn’t receptive to Johns’ input. Johns was also unimpressed with the quality of the material, reading the newspaper in the control room while the band smoked weed and jammed aimlessly in the studio. The album was edited down to a single LP by McCartney, in an attempt to release a more commercial and less expensive album. “Live and Let Die”, the title song to the James Bond film of the same name, was recorded during the sessions for Red Rose Speedway, but would instead be released on the Live and Let Die soundtrack album. The album’s packaging includes a 12 page booklet stapled into the gatefold sleeve, featuring pictures from Wings’ live shows. Its cover design, (with the cover shot of a Harley Davidson shovelhead engine by Linda McCartney,) was by Eduardo Paolozzi, while the back cover contains a Braille message of “We love ya baby” for Stevie Wonder. #wings #paulmccartney #redrosespeedway

Released on this day in 1971. “Thin Lizzy” is the self titled debut studio album from Thin Lizzy. The album was followed by the EP “New Day,” and the songs from the EP were included in later editions of the album. The line up on this LP was a great power trio of Philip Lynott on vocals, bass guitar, acoustic guitar; Eric Bell on lead guitar, and 12 string guitar; Brian Downey on drums. Additional musicians supporting included Gary Moore and Midge Ure with a few other studio musicians. Critics were not too kind on this release saying, “a number of songs sound confused and unfinished, however the song ‘Look What the Wind Blew In’ is a hint of things to come.” #ericbell #thinlizzy #phillynott
Released on this day in 1976. “Rastaman Vibration” is the 4th USA release by Bob Marley and the Wailers. The prior year was a big success for Bob Marley, coming off of the release and tour of “Natty Dread,” (the 1st after the departure of Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer.) He had also had a huge hit with the Top 40 hit “No Woman No Cry.” After the successful tour through England, Marley and his band returned to Jamaica, laying down the tracks for “Rastaman Vibration.” This album contains one of Bob Marley’s most popular US singles “Roots, Rock, Reggae.” It is the only Marley single to reach the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at #51. Synthesizers are featured prominently on this album, adding the breezy touch to an otherwise hard driving album with strong elements of rock guitar. This album is full of greatness; “Rat Race,” “Crazy Baldhead,” and “Want More.” These songs are tempered by buoyant, lighthearted material like “Cry to Me,” “Night Shift,” and “Positive Vibration.” On the inside of the original album cover, to the right, is a message stating “This album jacket is great for cleaning herb.” The original jacket had divots in it which made its texture bumpy. At the time this album was being made Bob Marley was involved in a contractual dispute with his former publishing company, Cayman music. Marley had not wanted his new songs to be associated with Cayman and it was speculated, including in his obituary in The Independent, that he had put them in the names of his friends and family members as a means of avoiding the contractual restrictions and to provide lasting help to family and close friends. Vincent Ford, a childhood friend from Jamaica, is the songwriter for “No Woman, No Cry” on the 1974 album Natty Dread, as well as the songs “Crazy Baldheads” (with Marley’s wife Rita), “Positive Vibration” and “Roots Rock Reggae” from Rastaman Vibration, along with “Inna De Red” and “Jah Bless” with Marley’s son, Stephen. Marley’s widow sued to obtain royalty and ownership rights to the songs. A 1987 court decision favored the Marley estate, which assumed full control of the songs. On this day in 1983, blues legend Muddy Waters (McKinley Morganfield) died in his sleep at his home in Westmont, Illinois, at the age of 68. Muddy Waters grew up on Stovall Plantation near Clarksdale, Mississippi, and by the age of 17 he was playing the guitar and the harmonica, emulating the local blues artists Son House and Robert Johnson. He was a major influence on many acts such as, Cream, Eric Clapton, and Led Zeppelin. Muddy Waters is the undisputed Father of post-World War II Chicago blues. He excelled as a recording artist, bandleader, songwriter and showman, and enjoyed a career long enough to inspire several generations of musicians to follow in his footsteps. He was the link between old and new blues, rural and urban, and black and white. His role in the music’s development was crucial. The Rolling Stones named themselves after Muddy Waters’ 1950 song “Rollin’ Stone.” Muddy was recorded in Mississippi by Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress in 1941. In 1943, he moved to Chicago to become a full time professional musician. In 1946, he recorded his 1st records for Columbia Records and then for Aristocrat Records, a newly formed label run by the brothers Leonard and Phil Chess. In the early 1950s, Muddy Waters and his band, (Little Walter Jacobs on harmonica, Jimmy Rogers on guitar, Elgin Evans on drums and Otis Spann on piano,) recorded several blues classics, some with the legendary bassist and songwriter, Willie Dixon. These songs included “Hoochie Coochie Man”, “I Just Want to Make Love to You” and “I’m Ready”. In 1958, he traveled to England, laying the foundations of the resurgence of interest in the blues there. His performance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1960 was recorded and released as his first live album, At Newport 1960. Muddy Waters’ influence was tremendous, not just on blues and rhythm and blues but on rock and roll, hard rock, folk music, jazz, and country music. His use of amplification is often cited as the link between Delta blues and rock and roll. Muddy Waters’ “Original Blues Classics,” released in August of 2014. This is a great compilation LP, which contains an excellent assortment of his work. #muddywaters

On this day in 1976 Keith Moon of The Who lived up to his legend when he paid 9 New York cab drivers $100 each to block both ends of a street so he could throw furniture out of his hotel window. After ensuring the blockade was in place, he went upstairs, opened his windows and proceeded to throw the contents of his room into the street below. Keith Moon was infamous for causing damage to hotel rooms, especially blowing up toilets. Another infamous incident took place in 1967, when Moon celebrated his 21st birthday at the Holiday Inn in Flint, Mich. He allegedly drove a Lincoln Continental into the hotel pool, blew up the toilet in his room and started a food fight. The band was reportedly banned from all Holiday Inns, as well as Sheraton and Hilton chains, along with New York’s Waldorf Astoria. “The Who by Numbers” is the 7th studio album by The Who, released in October of 1975. Pete Townshend claims that the band recorded practically every song he had written for album, partially due to a writer’s block that he was experiencing at the time. The songs on the album were, for the most part, more introspective and personal than many other songs that the band had released. Townshend had his 30th birthday in May of 1975 and was struggling with the idea of being too old to play rock and roll and that the band was losing its relevance. He began to feel disenchanted with the music industry, a feeling that he carried into his songs. He said: “The songs were written with me stoned out of my brain in my living room, crying my eyes out... detached from my own work and from the whole project... I felt empty.” They recruited producer Glyn Johns for this album, and had previously worked with Johns during the 1971 album “Who’s Next.” “The Who By Numbers” took an unusually long time to complete and was marred by numerous breaks and interruptions due to the band members’ growing boredom and lack of interest. A name like a disease, or at least a medical term. Indeed it is; a neologism deriving from the words Peri, meaning 'around', 'near by', 'approximately', and Lymph, a bodily fluid important for the metabolic exchange between tissue. Take this information and do as you wish. The fourth release of french prog rock group, 'Progressions Imaginaires' starts super spacy, jazzy and funky, and I expected nothing less. Thriving rhythms build up to a soundscape that sounds like the soundtrack to a movie with Miss Marple investigating a slimy murder in a faster than light space train filled with alien suspects. Sounds freaky? Totally. But in the music lies a calmness. A soothing voice carries me through the rivers of floating funk and jazzrock beats. It feels like a time travel equally to the acid jazz era of the 70s and to a distant future as well, and that with the ability to be super listenable and relaxing at the same time. The sleeve advertises this record as a progressive chess match between Tony Banks, Francois de Roubaix and King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard. Add Jean-Michel Jarre on some occasion and you have quite the match. There is a lot to discover in this rich mix, and I think I will never not buy another Perilymph record. Released on this day in 2022. “Lynyrd Skynyrd: Live At Knebworth ‘76.” This is outstanding! It’s double LP, a DVD+CD, Blu-ray+CD, limited edition release! This release captures the band’s historic show in England on August 21,1976 in a long awaited concert film. Long considered by Skynyrd aficionados to be one of the group’s best sets ever, the Knebworth gig presents the band’s most revered lineup featuring Ronnie Van Zant, guitarists Gary Rossington, Allen Collins and Steve Gaines, bassist Leon Wilkeson, drummer Artimus Pyle and keyboardist Billy Powell. Van Zant and Gaines would die the following year in the band’s infamous plane crash. This is very special too, as I would see the band in Florida just 5 days before the plane crash. The band performed for more than 150,000 festival goers on a full day of incredible music that included Todd Rundgren’s Utopia, 10cc, and The Rolling Stones. Skynyrd was in top form in 1976 and this was one of the days that cemented their reputation as one of rock’s most incredible live bands. Seeing the band play at their peak on a beautiful, clear afternoon on such a huge festival stage had to be unforgettable. This is the 1st time that this show has been released as an uninterrupted whole. This dvd footage was originally only available as part of the 1996 film “Freebird…The Movie” and was intercut with interviews and other performances. Released on this day in 2022. “No More Worlds to Conquer,” from the iconic Robin Trower. Yes, it is an excellent blues drenched delicious album! After more than 60 years, he still has the chops. Trower said, “I definitely feel like I’m still reaching with the guitar, and the songs, and everything else.” The vocal duties are handled by Richard Watts, and he brought in drummer Chris Taggart, who has appeared on Trower’s last few albums, to fill out his studio band. Trower also plays the bass on all tracks, but has always considered the song over his own ego. “Chris Taggart is on drums,” he explains. “He’s a wonderful drummer, and he’s done the last 3 or 4 albums. I started to realize, after I’d tried to sing these songs myself, that I wasn’t vocally up to it. Richard Watts has done a great job on vocals. He’s got a fantastic instrument – such a soulful singer – and he’s willing to get it exactly how I’m hearing it in my head. The other great thing about having Richard is that there’s quite a few songs on this album that I wouldn’t be able to play and sing live at the same time.” At 79, he is the elder statesman of blues rock and not showing signs of slowing down. Released on this day in 1981. “Zebop!” is the 12th studio album from Santana. This album features the single “Winning” a Russ Ballard tune, which is one of Santana’s last commercial hits until 1999‘s “Supernatural.” The album had several releases, and various different color cover backgrounds, including pink and red. This album is more rock oriented but does have some Lyon flair with songs like “E Papa Re,” and “American Gypsy.” Alex Ligertwood’s vocals are excellent. This is the Santana lineup that played the US Festival in 1982. This is a great album, and I’ve had this in my collection since the day it came out. I think my favorite song on this album is “Brightest Star.” #santana #zebop #brighteststar

On this day in 1993 Mick Ronson died from liver cancer at the age of 46. He was a guitarist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, and producer. He 1st achieved critical and commercial success working with David Bowie as one of the Spiders from Mars. Ronson recorded and toured with David Bowie from 1970 to 1973. He released his 1st solo album, “Slaughter On Tenth Avenue,” in 1974 and went on to release A total of 6 solo LPs. Ronson co-produced Lou Reed’s album “Transformer,” and was also part of “Hunter Ronson Band” with Ian Hunter. He worked with Morrissey, Slaughter & The Dogs, The Wildhearts, The Rich Kids, Elton John, John Cougar, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and T-Bone Burnett, among others. “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” (often shortened to Ziggy Stardust) is the 5th studio album from David Bowie, released on June 16, 1972. This is the follow up to his masterpiece, “Hunky Dory.” This album features contributions from the Spiders from Mars, Bowie’s backing band - Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder and Mick Woodmansey. This LP is considered Bowie’s breakthrough album. As of January 2016 it had sold 7.5 million copies worldwide. The album received widespread critical acclaim and has been considered one of the greatest albums of all time. Happy 91st birthday to Willie Nelson, born on this day in 1933. Willie Hugh Nelson is an American legend. He’s one of the most recognized artists in the Country genre. He is a musician, songwriter, poet, actor, and an activist. He was one of the key figures of outlaw country, a subgenre of country music that developed in the late 1960s.Willie has acted in over 30 films, co-authored several books, and has been involved in activism for the use of biofuels and the legalization of marijuana; he’s the co-chair of the advisory board of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML). He was born during the Great Depression and was raised by his grandparents. He wrote his 1st song at the age of 7 and joined his 1st band at the age of 10, and hasn’t stopped since! He holds a 2nd degree black belt in tae kwon do and a 5th degree black belt in the Korean martial art of GongKwon Yusul. He has been arrested many times for marijuana and drug possession. One of those arrests came in 1977 in the Bahamas. Customs found weed in his jeans pocket, in his bags. Nelson was arrested and jailed. His Manager made arrangements to get a 6 pack of beer to his cell. Willie was released a few hours later. Upon release, drunk, he fell after jumping to celebrate and he was taken to the emergency room. He then appeared before the judge, who dropped the charges but ordered Nelson to never return to the Bahamas. Nelson’s discography includes 67 studio albums, 12 live albums, 42 compilation albums, 2 Christmas albums, the soundtracks of “The Electric Horseman” and “Honeysuckle Rose,” and 34 collaboration albums. “One for the Road” was released in 1979.
