Happy mixed media Monday! I've been stitching on watercolor paper. I'm practicing my mindful stitching with some exploration of different materials to stitch in. The watercolor paper was fun to experiment on. I also made a name tag out of a satiny polyester fabric and interfacing. April's Art Off Challenge with @indigo_whimsy and @makesharerepeat is Bubble🫧. I had lots of ideas for this challenge, but didn't create any of them. I had a brainstorm yesterday as I was preparing for the inchie challenge . . . making tiny matchbox needle keepers out of manilla tags. I created these two bubble needle keepers with alcohol markers, felt, a tag, button thread and cotton warp string. I drew the bubbles, bound the felt in with a chain stitch, then attached an eyelet through a circle to use as a closure. This project is perfect for the art off and mixed media Monday. I have a plan for these needle keepers but I need to make a bunch more first! #artoffchallenge #makesharerepeat #mixedmediaart #mixedmediamonday

Sometimes a doodle is just a mindless scribble and sometimes it sparks your creativity. I was doodling over the weekend which lead to a skull 💀 doodle. That doodle led to making a skull mug @lowellmakes during the Mug & Brew class. @potteringaround.nh taught us how to make a basic pinch pot mug then let us loose to customize our creations. My pinch pot became a skull mug. With my extra clay bits I sculpted a skull and a little plant friend that will sit in my house plants. Today @indigo_whimsy gave me a little tutorial and some much needed guidance to carve my first stamps. I redrew that skull doodle to create a stamp and love how rough it looks! Participants traced around little piles of rice to create islands which they then named & colored in if they wished. These were so much fun!!! I planned to participate in the 100 day project but I got 3 days in and realized with everyday life and my wandering craft mind I was never going to get to 100. It seems like a great project, but I didn't want to put pressure myself, so I decided I'd create when I wanted and to save the pieces in a journal or a card tin. Today I finished the 6th card. They are 4 1/4" by 3 1/4" cards so they can be done in a little time or a lot of time depending on the details. I've painted, sewn, drawn, glued, doodled, weaved and reused scrap materials that were destined for the recycling bin. It's been fun to just experiment and create with no real end product in mind. Instead I'm focusing on exploring and creating with the goal of having a collection of creative mixed media experiments when I'm done. It's funny how a change in mindset can take the self-imposed pressure off and bring the fun of creativity back. #mixedmediamonday #mixedmediaart #artexperiments #makesharerepeat

I've been having so much fun creating with mixed media. I added another junk journal page. Honestly I didn't want to have a lot of florals in my junk journal. I love flowers but I really wanted to explore something different in my first junk journal. Unfortunately my brain thought, no florals, meant I should make more flowers. Sometimes when you are busy telling yourself not to focus on something, you focus on it more. This was a great reuse project for the February Art Off Challenge. I reused an old envelope, some brown packing paper, old book pages, and scrapbook paper from my stash. Even the journal is an old journal that is getting reused. I didn't even have to buy anything for this, I had everything already. I have a big creative stash but I love finding and buying new(or used) supplies. Not buying supplies this month was a bit of a challenge for me. I made it three weeks before I finally gave in and bought supplies. I had to...I found vintage cookbooks, postcards, maps and paper that I can use for bookbinding and junk journaling. These pages have been in process for days, I've been so busy; and the thought of using this poem and verse have been in my head for a couple weeks after reading a section in the book, Beholding and Becoming The Art of Every Day Worship. I incorporated the @expressyourartsysoul FB groups #mixedmediamonday for this week which in writing or scratching into paint or gesso. I used clear gesso over some stenciling already on the pages and wrote the word Today. After gluing in the poem, I added Amsterdam acrylic inks. Once those were dry I highlighted the texture using Ranger Archival Ink with my finger. I wrote the verse on tissue wrap and glued it in. I got a new sewing machine yesterday. It will do some decorative stitches and a couple of alphabets. I used it to stitch today on a fabric scrap from @a.houseofbooks. The flower was finger painted, doodled and fussy cut. I can rejoice in this day - whatever it may bring - because God made this day and he makes nothing without purpose and plan. God is in this day and he will sustain me in this day!!!

Day two in sharing a piece of work everyday. For our first Mixed Media Monday I'm sharing a little project that I did at the last school I worked for. A silicone mold of my hand. While testing this process (I had never made an alginate mold before) I discovered instrinsic painting (mixing paint directly into the silicone before pouring) and also discovered a technique to create organic colors and textures by letting different colors of silicone to mix in the mold. Weight is kavode in Hebrew meaning glory. Earth js His footstool, it can’t bear the weight of His glory. So for us possessions, issues, problems, glory are only footstool ones. Art journal spread. In the @expressyourartsysoul FB group, this week's #mixedmediamonday prompt was to have a mostly dark background. A challenge for sure!!! The stencil I've used is from @artofcarolineduncan new collection, Be Wild Set @joggles. When life seems to be a whirlwind, if we can look past/through the craziness and keep our focus on God, there is Peace.
Processing thoughts on a page then applying paint over it is very therapeutic. I’m so pleased that I came across @expressyourartsysoul last year inspired by her journaling. Across the world we find encouragement. It’s a fun way to empty one’s thoughts particularly writing our prayers and keeping them safe under layers of colour that fill my soul with joy. The Lord fills me with His joy as I rejoice in Him. He knows me. This verse He wanted me to meditate on since the beginning of last year ‘Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, IN everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Even when I don’t feel like it I know when I begin to rejoice, my heart is transformed by His grace. This spread was for #mixedmediamonday on @expressyourartsysoul Fb page with some black. Art journal spread. The page already had some sprays and stamping and paste through a heart stencil on it from who knows when. I added paint and gesso and scribbles and text stamping. The 2 large hearts were cut from a gel print. The fabric strip was part of a closure from A House of Books kit and I stamped some little hearts on it. Stabilo All pencil and gold metallic pen used. Lots of layers for this journal spread. I've been trying to get better about layers and covering things up because it really does build interest. This week's #mixedmediamonday prompt in the @expressyourartsysoul FB group is modeling paste. I used texture paste through a stencil for some leaves, spraying the paste with #distressspraystain before removing the stencil. The large outlined leaf in the bottom left is from a napkin. There are pieces of the same napkin in the layers of the background. Those beautiful pink dots around the edges are lunar paste through another stencil. Smaller stamped leaves are scattered about. The cluster uses bookbinding scrap from @a.houseofbooks and a metal gold leaf I added color to. A stamped leaf (newest #timholtz leaves set) cut out, wrinkled a bit, and glued in the bottom left. It’s spring and we are enjoying our morning walks to the beach. Having a fun play for #mixedmediamonday @expressyourartsysoul Fb page. I’m playing with powder paste on modelling paste while working on the next #wanderlustclass2023 lesson Inspired by @alteredstatesstudio @theuglyartclub with scribbling as well. Rocks at the beach remind me of @jeanneoliver and her class with rocks. I also love what she talked about in wanderlust live with @everythingartuk not to use art as a reward after everything is done. How often do I do that?! Incorporate it into our everyday life. It is like a soul support, a constant flow of oxygen when we release our creativity however it comes with no judgement. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
