April is Arab American heritage month – a time to celebrate the contributions of Arab Americans to life in the U.S. As many of you know, I’m Palestinian American, and my background occasionally finds expression in my music (for example, in “Justice in My Time,” from my second album, Wash My Horse in Champagne, or in “Meet Me at the Fence” on my fourth album, Living in the City). This year it seems appropriate to highlight, in particular, comedian/actor/director Ramy Youssef (@ramy), whose show Ramy you may have seen on Hulu. Along with Mo Amer (@moamer), he’s also the co-creator of the comedy series Mo on Netflix. He’s pictured here speaking at the Muslim Public Affairs Council Media Awards back in 2017. In late 2023, Ramy devoted proceeds from his stand up show “More Feelings” to support American Near East Refugee Aid’s work in Gaza. And in his brilliant Saturday Night Live cold open this past Saturday, he shared that he was praying for the freedom of the people of Palestine to sustained audience applause. In 2018 the MENA Arts Advocacy Coalition reported that 78% of Arab characters in US Media are portrayed as trained terroriser, agents, soldiers or tyrants. There is an abysmal number of MENA Women across the gamut of roles and positions in cinema. As a general rule, the statistics of Arabs in Western media are not so good. The silver lining is that strides have been made in the last 5 years when it comes to Arab representation in media mainly due to the economies of scale brought on by streaming business models. As we plan on saying goodbye to our family business Abdallah’s Lebanese Bakery and Restaurant, which will close on January 31st after 45 years (first Lebanese bakery in Texas) and 34 years at our Hillcroft location…moments like these are so bitter sweet. Today my daughter, Tanya Joubran cooked lunch with her Teta for our family. The count down is harder than I thought it would be as so many memories are flooding through my mind. I grew up in this restaurant business-since I was 15 years old. It’s where I went every day after school, how I spent my weekends (working behind the register) and the only place I was allowed to hang out with my friends. To this day, when I walk through the door, I have flashbacks of my dad sitting at “his table“ playing backgammon with friends, my uncle making his hooka after baking the bread, and my aunts who came every Sunday after church to have lunch with the family. I will forever cherish our regulars who have become like family, students who left their families and called Abdallah’s home and my mom becoming their 2nd mom. I have so much gratitude for Houstonians who have supported our family business. Cheers to my precious mom who poured her heart and soul into this business for 34 years! She is the most hard-working woman I’ve ever known and I’m so lucky that’s she’s my mom. He also won a 2022 Gotham Award; AFI Award; a 2023 Peabody Award and a 2023 Television Academy Honor. He was also nominated for a 2023 Film Independent Award for “Lead Actor in a Special Series”. The show is currently in prep for its second season. Mo was also seen co-starring alongside Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson in the DC Comics superhero film Black Adam. The film grossed over 393 million dollars globally where he was the scene stealing comedy relief to The Rock. Amer has performed tours in over 27 countries on five continents, including Germany, Italy, Sicily, Japan, Korea and Bahrain, as well as with other Muslim comedians Preacher Moss and Azhar Usman in the Allah Made Me Funny comedy tour since 2006. Recently Mo has had two Netflix comedy specials: Mo Amer: The Vagabond and Mo Amer: Mohammed in Texas on November 30, 2021.

He can currently be seen in the Netflix series Mo, a semi-autobiographical series; Amer plays Mo Najjar, a Palestinian refugee seeking asylum while living in Texas most of his life. Mo is a man in limbo, who’s never able to hold down a job or get health care because of his immigration status, and the way he casually flits through his life is reflective of that reality. Amer mines great comedy from this unique situation and surrounds himself with a strong and charming supporting cast.
