As you will have seen from our posts, the suffering of children in Kolweze, DRC is appalling. The things we saw seared a grim, inedible mark on our souls. Of course it is going to take money to help these kids. But much more than money will be needed. What matters more than anything to Carl and I is that the situation for these children improves as soon as possible. We are working as quickly as we can to create a plan. If you have experience in relevant areas, why not reach out to either of us and do something that will change the world for some of the most marginalised people. When Rachael* arrived in Australia she was so excited to finally meet her husband in person. The pair had met online and he had described an amazing world of opportunities to her, if only she’d move to Australia to be with him. Eventually, after months of promises and lavish stories of the beautiful life awaiting her, Rachael agreed and decided to leave all her family and friends, as well as her career as a doctor, behind to start a new life. On the day she arrived in Australia her new husband took away her passport and she didn’t see it again until the day she left. Very quickly her new ‘dream’ life started looking like a nightmare as her in-laws treated her worse and worse. They stole and hid all the jewellery and money she had arrived in the country with as well as hiding her jackets and shoes so she was not able to leave the house. She was expected to wait on them hand and foot, literally spending hours a day massaging her mother-in law. When Rachael* first joined the Survivor School she was distraught and confused about her next steps. She was extremely distressed and her outlook on life was very bleak. Rachael* has since joined several outings within the survivor school including an outing to Vivid and a clothing fair. These activities gave her the chance to engage with other women who had experienced similar ordeals and made her feel less embarrassed and ashamed about what had befallen her. Rachael has also participated in several classes including classes to improve her English skills, computer skills and office skills. Eventually, Rachael* participated in our Work Ready course and has since been paired with one of our amazing, safe and ethical employment partners. She has been in her role within this amazing organisation for over a year now and has come such a long way in terms of her sense of confidence and self-worth that she will now be representing this organisation to other survivors at our upcoming Career Day. Rachael* is hoping to transfer her medical degree over so she can work as a GP within the Australian healthcare system. Can you support survivors by donating, volunteering or shopping with us? A core value of Occupational Therapy (OT) is the engagement in meaningful occupations. We advocate that all people have a right to opportunities and resources to enable them to engage in a variety of occupations that adds value to their lives. Human Trafficking and Modern-Day Slavery is a violation of human rights. Many survivors experience a sense of hopelessness and meaninglessness, caused by forced occupations and lack of choice. When Rachael* arrived in Australia she was so excited to finally meet her husband in person. The pair had met online and he had described an amazing world of opportunities to her, if only she’d move to Australia to be with him. Eventually, after months of promises and lavish stories of the beautiful life awaiting her, Rachael agreed and decided to leave all her family and friends, as well as her career as a doctor, behind to start a new life. On the day she arrived in Australia her new husband took away her passport and she didn’t see it again until the day she left. Very quickly her new ‘dream’ life started looking like a nightmare as her in-laws treated her worse and worse. They stole and hid all the jewellery and money she had arrived in the country with as well as hiding her jackets and shoes so she was not able to leave the house. She was expected to wait on them hand and foot, literally spending hours a day massaging her mother-in law. When Rachael* first joined the Survivor School she was distraught and confused about her next steps. She was extremely distressed and her outlook on life was very bleak. Rachael* has since joined several outings within the survivor school including an outing to Vivid and a clothing fair. These activities gave her the chance to engage with other women who had experienced similar ordeals and made her feel less embarrassed and ashamed about what had befallen her. Rachael has also participated in several classes including classes to improve her English skills, computer skills and office skills. Eventually, Rachael* participated in our Work Ready course and has since been paired with one of our amazing, safe and ethical employment partners. She has been in her role within this amazing organisation for over a year now and has come such a long way in terms of her sense of confidence and self-worth that she will now be representing this organisation to other survivors at our upcoming Career Day. Rachael* is hoping to transfer her medical degree over so she can work as a GP within the Australian healthcare system. Can you support survivors by donating, volunteering or shopping with us?
