Last week, from Feb. 10 to Feb. 17, was National Entrepreneurship Week, celebrating small businesses across the country. Several Molokai small businesses made the trip to Maui to highlight Molokai’s creative entrepreneurial spirit. Maui County partnered with organizations across Maui, Lanai and Molokai including MEO, Maui Business Brainstormers and the Molokai-based organization Ho’aka Mana to celebrate National Entrepreneurship Week. Kanoe Davis, executive director of Ho’aka Mana and CEO of her own small business PoMahina Designs, explained that “having a small business on an island where our resources are very limited, we found other ways to grow.” Davis’ PoMahina Designs is sold internationally. “To think that a small place like Molo-mkai has an opportunity to leave the shores, to go to the continent, and then go to all the different countries…it just doesn’t seem real, doesn’t seem fathomable in regards to where we are in Hawaii,” said Davis at the Feb. 12 event at the King Kamehameha Golf Club in Wailuku. Some of the other Molokai small businesses in attendance were fellows from Ho’aka Mana’s Pulauhala small business intelligence cohort program, as well as other Molokai businesses like Molokai Sea Farms and The Molokai Dis- patch. Pulauhala has been part of a small business boom on Molokai in the lascouple of years. Just last year, Molokai brought in over 40 applications for new businesses, according to Davis. “That’s a lot for our island,” said Davis. “It tells us how important it is to uplift each other, how important it is to connect with everybody in the county.” Former Pulauhala participants Mike and Nani Kahinu with Na’ike, Arianna Patterson with Arianna Photography and Solana Adachi of Pala’ela’e Collective, had a chance to speak at the event, emphasizing unique challenges and joys of running a Molokai small business. This past month, we recently completed Community Workshop #4 of our Molokai Climate Change and Sea Level Adaptation and Resiliency plan (CCSLAR). These Community Workshops were held throughout the entire island at the four main districts: Manaʻe, Kaunakakai, Kualapuʻu/Hoʻolehua, and Maunaloa. At each workshop, community members were able to view our newest Priority Site Maps with Coastal Inundation Zones, and CHOOSE the mitigation strategies they feel fit for OUR island and community! On October 26, 2023, our Maunaloa Community Workshop featured a random giveaway, and we're excited to announce Denise Alameida as the winner of a free INSTAPOT from the Sustʻāinable Molokai CCSLAR team. Denise, a dedicated attendee since our inaugural workshops in November 2021, consistently contributes valuable insights to the Molokai CCSLAR plan. We extend our gratitude to Denise for her continued engagement, and we'll be in touch soon for prize collection! Although Hinahaukaekae struggled to find her place in the scheme of things, when she turned into the hau tree, she was able to serve everyone in her community. Haumea IV - Pua Hau All kine kanaka from each generation make a community. Haumea manifested as Hinahaukaekae and gifted us a tree that can be used in so many ways. Although Hinahaukaekae struggled to find her place in the scheme of things, when she turned into the hau tree, she was able to serve everyone in her community. There are many powerful haʻawina in her story, most importantly that there is a place for each one of us. We all have value and are born of the aloha of our most remote akua and kūpuna - from the ʻaunaki ahi kanaka, the fire plough that creates the spark of human life (often made of hau wood)! Never doubt this. But if you ever forget or feel confused, reach out because there are arms that will reach back. Moʻolelo tells us of the story of Nānāhoa, the male fertility god, who lived in the area. Nānāhoa’s wife, Kawahuna, caught him admiring a young girl one day. Kawahuna became upset, pulled the young girl’s hair, and was struck by Nānāhoa. Kawahuna fell down the cliff, and both Kawahuna and Nānāhoa were turned into stone. #WahiPanaWednesday ~ Hansen’s disease reached the islands in the late 1800s and without an effective treatment, and the threat of eradicating the Native Hawaiian population, patients were sent to the remote and inaccessible Kalaupapa Peninsula. For almost a century, Hansen’s disease patients were taken from their families and forced into isolation. The settlement had insufficient housing and supplies, and although the Board of Health made efforts to improve these conditions, they couldn’t keep up with the number of patients. Father Damien and Mother Marianne were a couple of the selfless individuals that dedicated their lives to helping the patients in Kalaupapa. Over time, a community was established and after the quarantine policy was abolished in 1969, many decided to remain in Kalaupapa.
