NĀNĀ I KE KUMU Nānā i ke kumu is a Hawaiian proverb that means to “look to the source.” “Nānā” – to look, observe, or to genuinely pay attention to “ke kumu” – teacher, beginning, source, or place of origin Saying this encourages us to look to our roots, our ancestors, to nature, and to God our creator for guidance, help, love, and Aloha. Every sunrise, every sunset, every wave that caresses the shore reminds us to find, look, and pay attention to the source, origin, and beginning. Growing up my father would look out into the horizon while we were surfing and say: “Nānā i ke kumu”, because for him it was always in the ocean that he felt a sense of peace, guidance, and connection to God. He had a difficult childhood but always felt that he could find happiness and purpose in being here when he went to the sea... Here I remember that sense of belonging in childhood. I can understand that God’s plan is greater than my own. As I learn to grow in faith and trust in Him, I am given a new sense of hope for tomorrow. “The closest man-with-god relationship came in the ‘aumākua. These were ‘family gods’ or, more accurately, the ‘ancestor gods.’ The bond between human and ‘aumākua were very real. For these deities had once been living beings; they were long-departed ancestors become gods. From the long corridors of time, the ‘aumākua watched their descendants. […] For ‘ohana (family) loyalty continued into eternity. […] Not only the names of ‘aumākua must be learned; their functions, dwelling places, and kino lau (changed forms) must also be known. ‘Aumākua might take the animal form of owl, shark, lizard, turtle, caterpillar, eel, mudhen, or the indigenous field mouse. Animal form might change again into plant form. The ancestor god who inhabited the ‘ōpelu (mackeral) might change to the lobelia plant, also called ‘ōpelu. Rocks might be merely sacred to a deity - but rocks might also be a deity.” 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿 (Excerpt from “Nānā I Ke Kumu - Volume II” by Mary Kawena Pukui, E.W. Haertig, M.D., and Catherine A. HULA🌺…so much more than just a dance that you watch at a Luau as an entertainment piece. In my performing years when I was that entertaining piece, people would come to say how moved they were by a performance, many of them brought to tears and not understanding what was making them feel this emotion. Hula is the Spirit of the Ancestors, an invocation to BE in deep communion with those who have gone before us, to honor ohana that we are dancing about, all embodied within the Hula dancer. However, this connection isn’t just a given, it takes work. What you watch is the ‘form’ of the Hula. What you feel is the ‘essence’ of it. Mahalo nui loa to @manaomolokai Kumu Pa’a Lawrence and Kumu Pa’a Kyrian for helping me come to this understanding, my innate connection with all that is, seen and unseen. I see through a different lens knowing what I know. Wisdom is gained with experience as we continue to have the courage to do the hana (work) to truly come to “know thyself”. #bealoha #livepono #hulaislife #manaomolokai #mahalonuiloa #nanaikekumu #knowthyself #spiritmindbody #innateconnection #waysoftheancestors #deepgratitude #takeyourpowerback #sovereigntyovermybeing #getgrounded #notallwhoWanderarelost #immorefoundthanever #makeyourimprintintheworld
NĀNĀ I KE KUMU (Look to the Source) What does 'looking to the Source' mean? It means knowing where the 'ike (knowledge) that you are learning is coming from. In Traditional Hawaiian Teachings, the 'ike is often passed down orally from generation to generation. Perhaps you have tried learning Hula and/or Oli (chant) from YouTube and it just doesn't feel right. Or maybe you have been learning from someone who is not Kanaka 'Ōiwi (Hawaiian) and you're wondering if there is another teacher out there for you? If you are curious about the traditions and culture of the Kanaka 'Ōiwi (Hawaiian), who better than to learn from a Traditional Culturalist who was born and raised learning from Nā Kupuna (Elders) from a very young age! THIS is what you will experience in our Beginners' Course as a member of Hālau Mana O Molokai. The new course will be starting in January 2023! CLICK ON THE LINK IN BIO to register for our FREE informational meeting on JANUARY 10, 2023. ABOUT NĀ KUMU: Kumu Pa'a Nui Lawrence Kalainia Kamani Aki is a Kanaka 'Ōiwi Teacher of Foundation coming from a traditional lineage of 50 generations from the island of Molokai, Hawaiʻi. He teaches both Kanaka ʻŌiwi and international students who want to reconnect with the indigenous Hawaiian Spirituality and Culture. He helps them to build their foundation on a spiritual, mental, and physical level so they can live Aloha and Pono and take on their responsibility in their ʻohana (family) and community. Kumu Pa'a Kyrian van Vliet is the wife of Kumu Paʻa Nui Lawrence. She teaches Papa Hula and Papa Oli to students from all backgrounds who want to (re)connect with their ancestors and learn Hawaiian history & protocol. She helps them to share aloha and reverence so they can connect from within their heart & naʻau in their dance and chant. Bring all your questions to the meeting on January 10 and ask the Kumu for yourself. See you there! Today, I held my great-great-great grandmother’s death record in my hands. Her name was Mary Francis Powers (incorrectly listed here as Mary Power), and she was sent to the leper colony at Kalauapapa in 1888, at age 52, along with one of her daughters. Her other daughter, Margret, did not catch the disease, and she became my great-great grandmother, Mother Waldron, who became a well-loved philanthropist on O’ahu and has a park named after her in the neighborhood of Kaka’ako. Mary Francis lived the rest of her life in Kalauapapa, and died there in 1905. She never got to see her home island of O’ahu, but the record of her death lives here now. And I, her great-great-great granddaughter, will lift up her name. ❤️ #nanaikekumu #looktoyourroots

As Kapena Kamaki says, there are many things that we kilo every single day from the time that we wake up. As a navigator, one must always be sharpening the tools needed to be continually guided in the right direction.
