Rare and top!! Lega Lukungu mask from bone, 1900-1920. This mask may only be worn by a member of the Bwami society with the highest level of Kindi. The members who decided about big issues as war for instance. These masks were held in the hand or tied to the upper arm. The scarifications are done by hand. Provenance: ex Rob Vervoort ( before that from a ex colonial family from Liège, Belgium). There is a crack on the right side of the mouth that does not extend all the way to the back. So not a piece has been missing! However, if you look through the magnifying glass, the crack appears to have been reinforced with some glue. There was once a restoration under the left eye, but this was already done in situ. The cord is still original. The mask is mounted on a custom made stand. On the wooden pot the cosmogram about life and death is depicted with white dots. The objects inside the pot are full of symbolism. At the bottom a mixture of earth and tukula covered with a piece of snakeskin. The snake communicates with the medium and is the messenger. The pot contains, among other things, a ball and a hoof of an antelope that lives in the jungle. (blue duiker is the name in Dutch) The pot is also equipped with elephant hair, oyster shell and a cauri shell covered with tukula powder. The piece of wood with dots represents the person being called. The Bembe statue represents the questioning person. The oracle pot has a piece of cloth from the shroud of an ancestor at the bottom. The discoloration on the edge of the pot is caused by heating. The pot can be dated to around 1920 and comes from the collection of the Wouters family from St. Trond in Belgium. Oracle pots come in different shapes such as a gourd, wooden pot or basket. They are often linked to one person. The pot is 13 cm high, including the custom-made base approximately 17 cm. The circumference at the bottom of the pot is 28 cm. The weight of the pot is 319 grams, including the base 616 grams. TERRACOTA en la @montagutgallery de Barcelona 🤩 Hace un par de semanas tuve el gusto de poder visitar de la mano de Guillhem Montagut su magnífica exposición sobre Terracotas en su nueva ubicación en Barcelona, que es inmejorable. (Enrique Granados, 49, 08008) La muestra “Terracota”, nos permite ver una gran calidad objetos (tanto utilitarios como de ritual) realizados en este material, siempre apuntando a la máxima calidad de las piezas y la excelencia en la presentación de estas. Barcelona based Montagut Gallery (@montagutgallery) focuses primarily on art from the early periods of tribal societies, with particular emphasis on African art. During BRAFA 2022, 19 - 26 June, you are welcome to see this 19th century reliquary figure from Ogooué-Ivindo in Gabon. Attributed to the Kota-Mahongwe people, these effigies of ancestors, characterized as much by the abstraction of their ogive head punctuated by a bun at the top as by their faces plated with thin strips of brass, surmounted the large reliquary baskets containing the skulls of the family's important deceased. Each of these reliquary baskets was associated with several ancestral figures.
