How about stepping into the phantasmagoric world of James Ensor this weekend! 🎭 James Ensor, the Belgian artist known for his vibrant depictions of carnival and society’s grotesque underbelly, often used masks and bright colors to represent the chaos and absurdity of carnival. However, his work also reflected his deeper fascination with skeletons, death, and a critical view of the art world. Like many great artists, Ensor felt misunderstood and overlooked by his contemporaries. “Why was I a quarter of a century ahead of modern searches in all areas?” he said. His art, filled with transvestites, skeletons, and masks, was intended to challenge societal norms and ridicule the status quo. 2024 marks the Ensor Year, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the famous Belgian artist’s passing. His first painting with a skeleton, “Skeleton Viewing Chinoiserie” of 1886, marks Ensor’s abandonment of the impressionist rendering of reality he had practised up to that point. The work is part of the @MSKGent’s collection. “Pierrot and Skeletons” that you see here was made around 1905 and is currently on display in the exhibition James Ensor: Maestro at @BozarBrussels, where more than 150 works by the artist are on display, until 23 June 2024. Additionally, later this year, the @MoMuAntwerp will dedicate a show to the symbolist focused on maskerade and make-up. Last weekend, we all learned the sad disappearance of the American artist Frank Stella (Massachusetts 1936-2024 New York). He was one of the most important figures of Minimalism. Influenced at the beginning of his carreer by the abstract expressionism of Jackson Pollock (Wyoming 1912-1956 New York) and Franz Kline (Pennsylvanie 1910-1962 New York), in the 1950s he turned to the Minimalist movement, which celebrated above all the simplicity and purity of form. Frank Stella is one of the few artists to have had two retrospectives, in 1970 and 1987, at the MoMA in New York. During the Summer 2022, @Baronian.Gallery hosted an exhibition dedicated to the 1980s artist's works, a critical period during which he created two series of works: The Waves and Illustrations after El Lissitzky’s Had Gadya. Frank Stella’s Had Gadya series emerged from his visit to the Tel Aviv Museum in Israel in 1981. During a tour of the collection, he discovered a set of eleven gouaches by the Russian avant-garde artist El Lissitzky (Potchinok 1890-1941 Moscou), which were illustrations for the traditional Jewish Passover song Had Gadya. Stella was drawn to the simplicity of the Had Gadya narrative and Lissitzky’s graphic, stylized rendering of it. Baronian displayed artworks by Frank Stella on his stand at the BRAFAArtFair. Let’s take a look back at our collaboration with the @brafaartfair , one of Europe’s most prestigious art fairs. To mark the 100th anniversary of Surrealism, the artist Paul Delvaux was given pride of place at this 69th edition of the fair. Architect @nicolas_de_liedekerke has designed two sets for the occasion. The first depicts a rail climbing towards our clouds, accompanied by a lady dressed in a lace dress balancing on a swing. The second shows a man entering a neoclassical pavilion shrouded by two clouds. The clouds produced for the @brafaartfair were inspired by the clouds used by Paul Delvaux in his numerous paintings. The clouds are 6m long and weigh 50kg each, and are equipped with a LED system to make them come alive. We would like to thank the Brafa Art Fair for this 69th edition, and especially @beatrixbourdon and Nicolas De Liedekerke, without whom none of this would have been possible. On the first Sunday after the Easter holidays, hundreds of museums and archives open their doors with the aim of bringing the richness, diversity, and potential of all the tangible and intangible cultural heritage that Flanders and Brussels possess to the attention of as many people as possible. They do this through more than 1,000 free activities, all aimed at exposing as many people as possible to Flemish art. This year’s theme revolves around the question: what makes a house a real home? Step on the trail and find different angles of what ‘home’ can be. On April 21, the Heritage Depot DEPOTYZE in Ypres exclusively opens its doors to the public. In the depot, various objects from the region that are at risk of ending up in attics and cellars find a new home. Are you participating in Slow Art Day? In a world in a hurry, we are looking for calm today! On average, people spend 28.63 seconds looking at a work of art. With that fact in mind, Slow Art Day was born. It is an initiative of American Phyl Terry, who visited a museum in New York in 2008. Instead of visiting the entire collection, he chose to focus on just two paintings. He wanted to discover what he would see if he really looked closely. Of course, he learned more about the artworks, but he also felt more connected to what he saw. What started as a small experiment is now an annual phenomenon: Slow Art Day. It is the day when you go to a museum to really look at a painting and thus stand still for longer than 28 seconds. What started in America has spread all over the world. In Belgium, too, there are many events around this day. For instance, @BOZARBrussels organises a Slow Art Tour, where you go through the exhibition "Histoire de ne pas rire: Surrealism in Belgium" at a leisurely pace with guides. This would have the effect of developing a more onerous system and market for galleries, artists and collectors, while creating an imbalance in relation to the systems and situations in neighbouring countries. Starting the week with a spotlight on the New York artist @RossBleckner. ✨ Bleckner (*1949) has built an impressive career that has earned him worldwide recognition. You will surely have spotted his subtle landscapes and abstract compositions already. Bleckner’s delicate, ethereal style is often achieved by using fine, transparent layers of paint which create depth and texture. In his early work, the artist was actively concerned with the AIDS crisis. In the 1980s and 1990s, he was involved in raising awareness and funds for the disease and created numerous artworks reflecting on that distinctive chapter in history. Bleckner’s paintings have been exhibited in major museums worldwide, and mesmerize many art lovers for their poetic, contemplative quality.
