In a few hours I will be posting ten new items to my website. One will be this Marquesas Island stilt step—the first time on the market—ever. As many of you know, I have developed a real love for Marquesas Islands stilt steps, tapuvae. I just think their strong tiki figures combined with often fantastic wear and patina make these extremely desirable objects both visually and tactilely. Thus, I was very excited when this one showed up in my email inbox a couple weeks ago. It is of a rare substyle with one arm raised to the chin—I am still researching the significance of this gesture and would love to hear from anyone who may have insight into this hand placement. I am equally proud to offer this tapuvae as its first time on the market. For over five decades the tapuvae was used as a coat hook on the back of a Raleigh, North Carolina home’s kitchen door. The stilt step is an ancient example, take a close look at the last image of the set that shows the backside of the figure. I can’t say the photo captures it perfectly but the back of the tiki’s neck has definitive precontact adze marks.
