This early 1959 Mosrite Prototype was custom-made for a musician named Stan Welch! Mosrite was founded in 1956, and during their early years, Semie Mosrite’s brother Andy sold custom spec’d guitars to popular musicians in Nashville. We believe Stan Welch was one of these performers! Along with a large, name-bearing pickguard, this guitar also features “crushed glass” inlays, a black lacquered fretboard, and two Carvin AP-6 pickups. Quicksilver - Just For Love - 1970 Quicksilver has long been a favorite of mine and, for me, typifies the San Francisco Psych sound from that era as much as the Dead, Jefferson Airplane and so many others. This album is an essential slice of summer listening; breezing its way into the stratosphere without even messing up your hair. On side 2, the four song run of “Gone Again”, “Fresh Air” (my wife’s favorite❤️), “Just For Love, part 2” and “Wolf Run, part 2” close out the album in perfect fashion. The full band is back together on this one after numerous run-ins with the cops and draconian drug laws kept them in a fractured state over the years. I just love the albums featuring Nicky Hopkins; he always adds just the right spice on the keys. My first copy of this album came from a free bin outside a store in Asheville, NC. The iconic illustrations on the jacket caught my eye; the wild haired band members sporting crazy Mosrite inspired instruments and depicted in scenes blending the natural and supernatural worlds. The music within followed suit. The copy in the photos just came my way and is MUCH cleaner than the freebie. The vivid artistry even more so without wrinkles, tears and neglect. Albeit a reissue, it sounds crystal clear to the ear. Another copy swap? Today, I made a research trip down to Norwalk, California. This is the former house of Reverend Ray Boatright. Boatright was a cowboy preacher here in Los Angeles who played music and performed at revivals and tent meetings, as well as his own integrated church in downtown Los Angeles. A very young Semie Moseley (16 or 17 at the time), performed at Boatright’s revivals and lived in this house for a few years, between 1952 and 1957 (give or take). The Reverend bought young Semie his first set of woodworking tools at Sears, and soon Semie was making his own triple neck guitar, as well as double neck guitars for Joe Maphis and Larry Collins, in the detached garage in back of the house. In return for buying him the tools, Semie named his new company Mos-Rite Guitars, an amalgamation of his own last name (MOSeley) and the Reverend’s last name (BoatRIGHT). This house is the birthplace of Mosrite guitars. Just down the road is the former location of the Pioneer room, a honky-tonk where Semie and Boatright presented Joe Maphis with his legendary double neck guitar for the first time, a guitar that would bring fame to Maphis and Mosrite all around the world, and put Semie Moseley on his path in guitar history.
