The Alpha Q is a classic in our collection. This one shown here in the Chapa colour edition. These were cast in concrete in one solid piece and the mold went through multiple iterations to make it work without any internal structure. *Behind the scenes* a recently completed Prov coffee table for a poolhouse project in California. These tables are made in our signature scagliola technique. The form is derived from a digital process of hacking photogrammetry (3D scanning) algorithms. The Prov form is specifically the child of a Sphere and an offset cylinder. This series of products is a perfect example of the digital and physical processes working together. Shop at link in bio ☝🏼

Studio Research: our summer Architecture student @jamesandnotyou (also currently attending the Master of Architecture program at Pratt, Brooklyn) is working on research for new aesthetics using discrete vector algorithms in Grasshopper. This is one of the physical samples created as part of the research. These artifacts and computational techniques are a core part of our practice where the outcomes are often used to create new bodies of work. We conduct new research every summer, and we will be spending the rest of the season posting from these sessions both past and present.
We are so excited for @jpsindianbistro to be opening tomorrow after a 2 week covid hiatus. They will be offering curbside pickup and delivery. I grew up in New Delhi and I can attest that JP’s is the best authentic Indian food in Calgary. Not just because I designed the space and made everything for it including the lighting, millworking, mirrors, tables, etc., but also because it truly is amazing comfort food run by a fantastic and energetic couple. I took on the JP’s project after my 1st year while studying for my Master of Architecture degree. I was already running the MTHARU studio and wanted a taste of what it was like to design a space. At the same time I wanted to test what it would be like if I could not only take on design projects, but also be able to cohesively design and make the physical objects that go into the space. I was pursuing the mythology of the Master Builders/Architects that once existed. The result was a beautiful, budget friendly, cohesive space where everything was purpose built for the site while taking into account the concept and context. Of course, having clients who collaborated throughout the journey and were willing to take a chance on me for my first design project was important for this to be a success. Swipe 👈🏼. Our New Primitives Lamp, as shown @collectiblefair in Brussels earlier this month. This design established a new direction for our studio by investigating forms generated using new departure point geometries. The materiality uses reclaimed aluminum waste from our CNC machining in our shop. This design was as much a physical exploitation as it was a philosophical exploration of adopting a post digital aesthetic as part of our design process as architects, artists, and designers. The technique came from my final research project while studying the Masters of Architecture program at the University of Calgary. I found a way to misuse photogrammetry algorithms to force them to fuse 2 physical objects to make “children”. In order to prove the effectiveness of the misuse, I generated and compiled a database of new primitive geometries that were essentially children of spheres and cubes and cones etc. This led me to ask the question: old primitives have dominated humanity for thousands of years, and with the advent of a hyper digital culture today, isn’t it time to leverage technology to evolve these primitives? And this led to another question that asks what happens if you use the child of a sphere and cone to design an object rather than just a sphere? The New Primitives Lamp is exactly that, by taking formal gestures from art movements such as surrealism to start answering the aforementioned design questions. 📷: Isabelle Arthuis

On September 24th MTHARU creative director Sumer Singh will be part of a panel to discuss a future of zero-waste. This event is hosted by @dtalks_calgary and it will be held at the Central library in Calgary. Other panel members include: @adamcorneil @lourdesjuan @puckwrangleryyc, moderated by @koole.girl. During my M.Arch. at the University of Calgary, I became interested in waste as a material for building. I first explored reclaimed structural steel and plastics in Winter 2016 in a project I called Station. In Fall 2016, I further explored my interest in waste in a second project that dealt with using the built city as an incubator for new materials through setting up automated sorting yards in high density areas, and I called this project Exquisite (re) Injection. These topics continued in my design studio that I ran simultaneously while studying architecture and have become an underlying theme in all our material explorations. Although we stay hush about the research work that is done at MTHARU, we will be posting some of this work and the members involved in the coming weeks leading up to the Design Talks panel discussion. We have created apparatuses, and new material synthesis that we are already using for aesthetics by injecting a higher purpose to old materials that would otherwise be sent to the landfills.
The Jouir tables have been the undisputed most exported item in our collection. This is what they look like before we melt the bronze in the seam and clear coat them. We’ll be sending another one out to New York City ❤️

Throwback to our material experiments with concrete extrusion from 2015/2016. We were inspired by the works of Anish Kapoor “between shit and Architecture” where we tested his 3D printed concrete techniques by hand.
