This morning I was in a consignment store when I came across a pair of these. I couldn’t help thinking that they were very familiar so I couldn’t leave them. After I decided to buy them the store owner said the person who consigned them said he had bought them in the early 50s from a furniture designer in Victoria. They are solid walnut put together with Robertson Screws and the joinery is immaculate. They are very simple but beautifully designed pieces and the solid wood grain is stunning. The last picture is from a 1950s Robin Bush Catalog with the only difference being a lower shelf which makes me go hmmmmm. I know that Earle Morrison and Robin Bush’s iron legged end tables came with and without lower tiers. Last week, Valerie Gow joined the TMU 4th year Interior Design studio as guest critic for final reviews. As a moderator for the Healthy Interior Design Symposium, Valerie was excited to see the thoughtful design projects based on the research! Taking lessons learned from the pandemic, the studio focused on proactive interior design strategies to mitigate viral transmission and reduce indoor air pollutants. The studio built upon knowledge from scientists, engineers, epidemiologists, designers, and public health experts whose work investigates indoor air quality and infectious disease transmission. Students explored design strategies addressing personal and shared mitigation responsibilities, as shown in the illustration by Rose Wong (adapted from Ian M. Mackay’s original “Swiss Cheese” model). Congrats to the students whose work will contribute to a manual of guidelines for the Interior Designers of Canada to equip designers with strategies for shaping healthy interiors!
