Diasporic multi-disciplinary artist, curator and cultural worker Ara Oshagan will be joining us on Tuesday, April 30 at 7:00 PM for Art Talk Tuesday at Brand Library & Art Center. Oshagan will discuss his work and the issues surrounding it, followed by a moderated Q&A with Brand staff member, artist and writer Jennifer Remenchik. Art Talk Tuesday artists are selected to reflect the diversity of the art scene of the greater Los Angeles area. Oshagan’s practice explores collective and personal histories of dispossession, legacies of violence, identity and (un)imagined futures. He works in photography, film, collage, installation, book arts, public art and monuments. Vectored by his own personal history, Oshagan is a documentarian and as well as conceptual artist. A descendant of communities who were deracinated from their indigenous lands by the Armenian Genocide in 1915, he was born in Lebanon (in diaspora) and displaced by civil war as a youth. Oshagan’s work researches and explores the associated visible/notvisible structures of identity, memory and histories of site/notsite. His lived experience, personal and communal history are deeply connected to his work. Art Talk Tuesday is sponsored by the Brand Associates. See the link in bio for more info. Images: Ara Oshagan. Beatriz Toledo’s photographic work includes stones, hiking, cartography, geology, the scientific representation of objects and research into hierarchical relationships. Toledo considers herself to be a visual artist, a proposer of independent projects. In collaboration with others, over the years Toledo created the independent spaces La Maudite in Paris, Tormenta in Medellín, Colombia and Tarantula in São Paulo, Brazil. In these spaces, Toledo began to understand her practice as something more expanded than “artistic work,” since she sees the very existence of these spaces and the proposals made in them as part of a broader idea of “my work.” Inspired by the ethos of land art and the aesthetics of science fiction, Brice Bischoff’s work creates sensorial connections to energies the Earth emotes as it changes throughout time. In his series titled How Close, all the work was created at Red Rock Canyon in the Mojave Desert, California over the course of five years. In all of its sublime beauty, the site exists restlessly in the present despite its ability to easily represent different places and moments in time. Given how long the exposures are in Bischoff’s work, a minimum of 15 minutes, his process has more in common with experimental film than still photography. Toledo and Bischoff’s work can currently be seen in SUMMERTIME: SUPERCOLLIDER + Students of Glendale Unified School District, curated by Marcela Vieira, is on view at Brand Library & Art Center through May 18, 2024. SUPERCOLLIDER artist Sofia Borges photographed the diorama featured in the artwork Plato’s Cave while studying at an anthropological museum. Borges (she/her) is a conceptual artist who – for the past fifteen years – has been using photography to investigate philosophical notions around relationship between matter, image and meaning. Considered one of the most pivotal Brazilian contemporary artists of her generation, in the first seven years of her career Borges developed a large and resounding body of works exploring photography and the expanded philosophical understanding of images. The photographs by art students at Daily High School also feature dioramas. Inspired by the whimsical work of Japanese photographer Tatsuya Tanaka, the students' photographs focus on inserting miniatures into natural environments, specifically the school garden. The students want their photographs to visually tell a story, inviting the audience to stop and ponder what is happening in each image. SUMMERTIME: SUPERCOLLIDER + Students of Glendale Unified School District, curated by Marcela Vieira, is on view at Brand Library & Art Center through May 18, 2024. Link in bio. Images: 1. The Moon, currently on view at Brand Library & Art Center, is part of the expanded storyboards of the imagery of Janaina Wagner’s new film, QUEBRANTE (23’, 2024). QUEBRANTE traverses the caves, ruins, and phantasmagorias of Transamazon BR230 Highway, portraying its stones and its ghosts. Set in tiny Rurópolis, the very first town ever built on the road, Quebrante follows Ms. Erismar, a retired elementary school teacher known in the region as The Cave Woman. A conversation between the moon and the stones, QUEBRANTE is inspired by Robert’s Smithson project THE TRULY UNDERGROUND CINEMA (1971) and the film THE VERY EYE OF THE NIGHT (1958) by Maya Deren. Janaina Wagner (she/her) develops her research in film, drawing and installations. Her work aims to present a critical understanding of the ways in which humans impose systems of order and control upon their surroundings. The Moon is part of the exhibition, SUMMERTIME: SUPERCOLLIDER + The Students of Glendale Unified School District, curated by Marcela Vieira (@marcevieira). On view through May 18, 2024. Link in bio. One of the artworks currently on view in the exhibition SUMMERTIME is Kïïka by Edgar Fabián Frías. Kïïka is a work of indigenous futurism. It is inspired by the Nierika, a sacred technology of the Wixárika community, of which Edgar is a descendant. Nierikas are maps of the universe and are used as divining tools that help facilitate ancestral communion and transcendental experiences. Not only are Nierika used for locating oneself within the world, they are also used to create cosmologies, ontologies, and, in essence, reality itself. Kïïka, which translates to “come closer” or to “cuddle up,” features a maximalist blend of personal and collective symbols, geometric shapes, and vibrant colors, combined with references to internet subcultures, abstract art, digital decay, and glitch aesthetics. SUPERCOLLIDER artist Edgar Fabián Frías (they/them) is a multidisciplinary artist, psychotherapist, educator, curator, and brujx based in Los Angeles, CA. With a passion for breaking boundaries and creating new forms of knowledge, Frías blends diverse artistic disciplines to produce thought-provoking and immersive works of art that transcend conventional categories. SUMMERTIME: SUPERCOLLIDER + Students of Glendale Unified School District, curated by Marcela Vieira, is on view at Brand Library & Art Center through May 18, 2024. Link in bio. Images: 1. The topography has long been divided, fragmented, and modified according to social, economic, and aesthetic motivations. The fifteen SUPERCOLLIDER artists in the exhibition present works with various materials and develop strange configurations, creating relationships between their works and the gallery space. SUMMERTIME considers the landscape as the consequence of human production, the result of the transformation from its natural state. The topography has long been divided, fragmented, and modified according to social, economic, and aesthetic motivations. The fifteen artists in the exhibition present works with various materials and develop strange configurations, creating relationships between their works and the gallery space. SUMMERTIME forges a path that seeks to investigate the reality and possibilities of representation, using fiction as a way to imagine alternative landscapes. SUMMERTIME is a collaboration between SUPERCOLLIDER, Brand Library & Art Center, and Glendale Unified School District. Students from Glendale Unified School District contribute works inspired by the curatorial concept of SUMMERTIME and are exhibited in conversation with SUPERCOLLIDER’s exhibition. Fiber artist and educator Fafnir Adamites will be joining us on Tuesday, March 5 at 7pm for Art Talk Tuesday at Brand Library & Art Center. Adamites will discuss their work and the issues surrounding it, followed by a moderated Q&A with Brand staff member, artist and writer Jennifer Remenchik. Art Talk Tuesday artists are selected to reflect the diversity of the art scene of the greater Los Angeles area. Using weaving, papermaking, and basketry, Adamites creates sculptures that act as monuments and reminders of trauma, intuition and the legacy of emotional turmoil inherited from past generations. Adamites works mainly with paper and wool, which they call “chaos structures”. Unlike a woven textile which is grounded in an orderly grid, chaos structures are open-ended and are based on a disorderly foundation. A powerful transformation takes place in papermaking and feltmaking when the millions of chaotic fibers bind together to make a strong, cohesive, singular piece. The conceptual depth rooted in these materials relates to their interest in reclaiming personal intuition and agency within the chaotic landscape of trauma. Art Talk Tuesday is sponsored by the Brand Associates. See the link in bio for more information on Art Talk Tuesday and the other artist speakers in the Spring 2024 series. Images: Fafnir Adamites. The type of experimental and eco-feminist research practice she engages in looks at the relative youth of our species and the very brief history of written knowledge, when considered in astronomical, biological, or geological time. If you missed Art Talk Tuesday with Ian James in person at Brand Library & Art Center, you can now watch the talk on the #GLAC YouTube channel. Link in bio. Ian James is an artist who primarily works in photography. Interested in the metaphysics of objects, James restages new age healing and healing device advertising and places these images in relation to one another atop laminate panels. These images indicate how a device should be placed on the body and how one should feel once the device is in use. In addition, James has been making pilgrimages to photograph pyramid architecture throughout North America and Europe as a form of late capitalist pilgrimage. The images he makes become a material substance for cast frame works, assemblages, sculptures, books, videos, a radio station, and a virtual reality environment. Join us at Brand Library & Art Center on Tuesday, December 5 at 7pm for an artist talk with Ray Anthony Barrett. Ray Anthony Barrett is a visual artist and chef. Since 2018, Barrett’s culinary pop-up, CINQVÉ, has been devoted to tracing the evolution of Soul Food from California to its West African origins. Barrett calls his food project Cinqué because he is Ray Anthony Barrett V but also as reference to Joseph Cinqué, the West African man who led the 1839 revolt aboard the slave ship Amistad. Barrett’s experimental film, GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN, commissioned by Active Cultures, questions the evolution of agricultural and land practices and the impact of dispossession and colonialism on foodways, tracing its roots from white settler colonialism to present day modes of capitalism and overconsumption. Barrett is particularly interested in the contradictions and tensions of American foodways as they pertain to the relationship between Black people and the land they were at once forced to inhabit and indelibly shaped. Art Talk Tuesday is a monthly conversation that invites contemporary artists to discuss their work and the issues surrounding it, followed by a moderated Q&A with Brand staff member, artist and writer Jennifer Remenchik. Art Talk Tuesday artists are selected to reflect the diversity of the art scene of the greater Los Angeles area. Art Talk Tuesday is sponsored by the Brand Associates. See the links in bio for more info on this program and the YouTube playlist of past programs. Images: Artist portrait by Marcus Yam, LA Times; Ray Anthony Barrett. GO, AWAY, 2021. I love the type of public art where some common object gets transformed into a unique part of the local landscape…like utility boxes, for example. Ever since we moved to Glendale, I’ve wanted the chance to paint one of these things, and finally had the opportunity to do so this year! The design is inspired by an art exercise where you draw random shapes and then turn them into variations on a theme — in this case, characters. Made as part of the “Beyond the Box” mural program, supported by the city of Glendale and the Library Arts & Culture Commission (Also: hello! It’s been a while. I’m doing okay, although social media continues to generally overwhelm me. 🙃) #traditionalart #traditionalillustration #artistsoninstagram #illustration #acrylicpaint #characterdesign #mural #publicart #utilityboxpainting #myglendalelac

"He Threw the Last Punch Too Hard" is an evocative and emotional exhibit by acclaimed photographer Hannah Kozak. In addition, The Clothesline Project, presented by YWCA of Glendale and Pasadena, is on view in PassageWay Gallery. Each shirt is made by a survivor of violence or by someone who has lost a loved one to violence related to assault and abuse. ReflectSpace & Passageway Galleries are located inside Glendale Central Library. The library’s hours are Mon-Thur 9am-9pm, Fri & Sat 9am-6pm, Sun 1-6pm, Closed Holidays.
