And so the journey begins… After trying a little fabric softener and water mixture to remove wallpaper, I actually thought simple water worked just as good. Top tip for it to work properly though: make sure the wallpaper is soaked through with water in order to peel off easier and in one go. Saves you the trouble of scraping at the wall for hours! Bathroom update. Ben the Plasterer is here again, working Saturday morning. He thinks the crumbly plaster (now removed and in the skip) was original Victorian (1860). Amazing to think of it being applied 164 years ago… I doubt this wallpaper is as old, could even be 1980s Laura Ashley (there was a lot of that inside cupboards and under stairs when we bought the house). But it’s very pretty in a faded, vintage kind of way. I will get back to making bunting and hearts - there’s just been rather a lot going on recently. As we await the underfloor heating and screed we thought we would share a before and after. It's hard to believe in 2022 the house looked like this. 🛠️ SWIPE FOR LITERAL KITCHEN BREAKDOWN 🛠️ Many people have complimented the kitchen, but this layout and style is so far from what we want in a kitchen that it was never going to work for us. So, bye bye 👋🏼 To saves costs, we hoped we could’ve saved the units and sprayed them a different colour instead. But the insides were stained and old, so they gots to go! 🙅🏽♀️ KITCHEN PLANS: 🚪 The external door will be bricked up and we’ll be having a new window installed to increase the natural light and worktop/ unit space. 🏝️ The wall separating the kitchen and dining room will be coming out to make it open plan, with a peninsula where the wall currently stands. The winter months are our quiet time. When we say quiet we don’t really mean it, because often they feel as busy as the crazy summer months, when the bed and breakfast and the gîte are open. Our quiet months are a change of pace, the house is closed to guests and the days shorter. Time spent caring for the house and grounds, taking on jobs that we just don’t have time for the rest of the year. We spent this winter renovating the boot room. For such a small space it was a lot of work. We’d made do with some ramshackle shelves and a whole lot of mess for six years, the ceiling was held up with an acroprop, the walls dark and crumbling, there was a trench in the floor from the removal of an old wall and no where to wipe our feet. We filled trenches, re-plastered walls, fixed and waxed beams, sanded, painted and tiled. Tim cleverly recreated the look of the bespoke cupboards I’d imagined for the space using Ikea kitchen units and runs of worktop. We painted cupboards for days, brushing on layers of paint to get the finish we wanted. We made the most of every inch of space. Building boot racks and a wine rack to fill gaps left by heating pipes. Heating pipes there because for the first time in its history this space is warm, a reclaimed radiator finally in place, giving us the opportunity to dry out damp coats and boots. It took a whole winter to create (you can read the full story of this room and see behind the scenes video of the renovation on my Substack journal) but we are so happy with how it turned out. Each of us has a separate cupboard and drawer for coats, shoes, bags and boots. There’s storage for bulbs and batteries, shoe polish and tool kits. And a whole overflow larder cupboard where we keep back stock for the chambre d’hôtes so we never have to worry about running out of essentials when we’re busy. I think it might be my favourite room in the house. Perhaps our best renovation to date? Certainly the one that has made the biggest difference to our day-to-day life. Our winter work done.

Here we go again. And it’s not in a good way! 🙄 Were you with me for the Great Paint Strip of 2022? Eleventy hundred layers of paint, including a pillar box red layer, were painstakingly removed (by me!) to reveal the true floral shapes of this hall cornice. And then we had a leak. I was ignoring the damage until the bathroom was fitted for fear of more water, but I’ve run out of excuses now so it’s time to fix this. I don’t really know what happened and why there was so much damage - perhaps I didn’t remove or neutralise all the Klingstrip so it dissolved in the water and continued to work on the new paint 🤷🏻♀️ I’ve given it a good clean and another wee coat of neutraliser just in case. I’ve carefully repaired the cracks with a wee bit of filler and then I’ll paint it again and hope for the best. Of course I’ll take you along with me for the ride! Morning all! We are about a month away from phase 2 of our building works, (“the one where we remodel the first floor and convert the loft”), so have been trying to get ourselves organised. Whilst the house was reasonably tidy, I popped round and took a few pictures, including this one of the oft-forgotten utility room, which has been an absolute godsend. You may recall this time last year it was still the kitchen (swipe for pics!) Now, instead of the front hall being full of the kids bags and coats, they’re in the utility (and the hall is full of stuff to go to the charity shop, but let’s not mention that now…🤦🏼♀️🤣) We’ve still got loads to do downstairs in terms of putting up pictures and getting all the random crap we seem to accumulate put away, but it seems like an ever growing task! Our oldest son is autistic originally we had this dream for our forever home to have a grand old fashioned staircase now we've started the build and he's hit 5 reality's struck and there's no way we could relax having a staircase where he could throw himself over (he is a total ninga) we aren't in the situation yet we need to make decisions but I've been scrolling online looking for inspiration at staircases that have stud walling surrounding them. Before we bought JTH Tucson in 2018 the property had sat abandoned for a decade. It feels as though this inn waited those ten long years for us to find it—we’re so grateful it did. As we approach our 5 year anniversary later this year, we’re enjoying looking back at how far we’ve come! 💫 Here’s a few before and after photos of spaces around the inn: our dining room & pantry, outdoor staircase, and Creosote suite.
H A L L W A Y. . . . The hallway is the one spot that repeatedly niggles. We are a busy bunch and from past experience, with the best will in the world, muddy shoes cannot be avoided or sometimes worse on a bad school run! The main hallway turns right so there is quite a lot of space to cover which needs to work harmoniously with the other flooring finishes in the house. . When we renovated our last house, I hankered after the beautiful patterned Victorian floors which reminded us of the glorious designs which graced even the slightly rough and ready student housing stock of Cardiff but budget constraints meant we went for a patterned larger format tile. . In this house, I’m not so sure. There were few original features left when we bought the house and we’ve decided to embrace the current chapter of the house by having a relatively clean but warm finish. I know some of the houses originally had small mosaic chequerboard patterned tiles, but think this will feel too overwhelming for me in a large area. . . I think I’m heading for a tumbled marble finish in a larger format for some softness balanced with durability. I know I don’t want chequerboard but would like some pattern…indecisive much 😬. . . Here are a few lovely examples mostly from Pinterest which have been winning my heart. As usual I fell in love with a gorgeous design which would be ridiculously labour intensive and not realistic in terms of budget so looking to be able to create something lovely without the need for a million cuts. New but old The cellar was converted by the previous owners, the old range and working kitchen would have been down here. It’s now what we call the annexe and is basically a flat in its own right. The first year we moved in I sanded and painted the cabinets and covered up the walls. Some slight regrets on colour choice but I’m not changing it anytime soon. The refurbished range we bought off eBay has definitely brightened the place up.
