🇬🇧 The Golden staircase in the Vladimir Palace. Designed and constructed by Maximillian von Messmacher in the 1880's. According to the original idea the natural light should have come from the window in the ceiling, above which there was a glass dome. 🇬🇧 Just finished a short lecture course at the Yusupov Palace arranged for tour guides. 4 hour presentation dedicated to the interiors and their history pointing to every single furniture item and applied art objects made me realize how much more we need to research in the Vladimir Palace. 🇬🇧 Cathedral of the Dormition of the Theokos, 1895. The architect Vasily Kosyakov, known as the great master of the Russian style in architecture, completed the construction in brick and concrete; He also introduced the system of criss-crossed arches to support the main dome of the cathedral which gave a totally new image to the central area - it looks open and wide. 🇬🇧 In 1875 the architect Viktor Schröter completed the gallery which connected the Grand Dining Hall with the family quarters. The gallery was constructed right by the Dance Hall which was a great addition to it and served as an extra space where guests could gather, smoke and talk. The former arched windows became open arches. While having his palace decorated in the 1870's grand duke Vladimir Alexandrovich indicated that it was important to him that the rooms of his future wife should resemble the style of rooms of his mother, the Empress Maria Alexandrovna in the Winter Palace . Designed in the 1830's by Jeronim Corsini, after the popular furniture style developed by Auguste Montferrand for the Winter Palace. A bit "heavy" and bulky at first sight due to its excessive decor (typical for this style) it looks a lot more monumental comparing to the third rococo style furnuture in the next parlour. Provenance: the Sheremetev Palace. 🇬🇧 On the issue of furniture study. Great collection of historic furniture decorates the interioirs of the Vladimir Palace in St.Petersburg. During the XX century the Palace hosted the Commuty of Scientists Residence, carefullly preserving the remaining items of art left after the owners were gone. However a lot of their belongings disappeared. A lot of furnuture pieces appeared in the Palace in the 1920's-30's and their provenance is unknown which is a great opportunity for us now to finally start researching it with the help of archives and documents. 📸 Photo taken by me /фото моего авторства 🇷🇺 К вопросу об атрибуции мебели. Интерьеры Владимирского дворца наполняют как и прекрасные мебельные гарнитуры, так и отдельные предметы мебели, представляющие разные исторические стили. Весь ХХ век во дворце размещался Петербургский Дом Учёных, который сохранил многие предметы искусства, оставленные хозяевами дворца "на память потомкам"... Но очень многое не сохранилось. В период 1920-х - 1930'х годов во дворец стала поступать мебель из других дворцов. First thing I do when come to the Palace is walk around the halls to check how everything is - it's sort of greeting the owner, or presenting myself as if to confirm I am back to service. 🇬🇧 On simplicity of the composition and colour. I was crossing the street when these amazing pink hues appeared right in front of me. Very simple composition - three buildings of the historic centre of St.Petersburg, like many of this kind. But the slight difference in their pink shades is striking against grey and gloomy winter scenery - isn't it art itself? What's more impressive is that right that moment there was woman walking past - she was wearing a pink coat. One of very few interiors that hasn't lost its purpose with time - it hosted glamorous balls and dance parties, it hosted science conferences and festivities, as well as nowadays this hall hosts classical music concerts. 🇬🇧 Quite recently the Shuvalov passage between the buildings of the Small Hermiatge and the Old Hermitage was made accessible to the public. ~ Once restricted area of the Hermitage premises it now makes it possible to get to the embankment of the Neva straight from the Millionny st. without walking around the whole Hermitage complex of 5 buildings. ~ The Shuvalov passage got its name after the chief marshal of the court Andrey Shuvalov who had residence in the building of the Small Hermitage in the XIX century. 📸 Photo taken by me/фото моего авторства 🇷🇺 В переходе между Малым Эрмитажем и Большим из окна открывается вид на стены Нового Эрмитажа слева и Малого справа. ~ Сравнительно недавно для сквозного прохода открылся Шуваловский проезд, соединяющий Дворцовую набережную и Миллионную улицу (угол с Дворцовой площадью). The architect Alexander Rezanov, 1870's Today this is the reception room of the Palace's Executive manager.
