That’s the wrap on 2 weeks in Washington DC. Explored it all by bike which is an amazing way to see it. Hit it prime time for Sakura bloom - all the Yoshino and Kanza cherry trees - gifts from Japan. Everything in full bloom and riding my bike was heaven cherry blossoms, lilacs, dogwoods, azaleas, camellias, tulips, bluebells, hydrangeas. This is the prettiest time to see it with all the old beautiful bulidings. Hit most of the fantastic Smithsonian museums, Zoo, the gardens Eastern Market, and fattened up by an incredible restaurants and food every where you looked! It was so intense and moving during this eclipse time that I need a lot of time to digest it all! Age, rising sea levels and poor drainage have taken a toll on the Tidal Basin and West Potomac Park seawalls, with high tide interrupting the route of my training today for the Ride to End Alzheimers. Portions of the seawalls have settled as much as five feet since their initial construction from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. As a result of the settling and sea level rise, water flows over portions of the seawalls twice a day during normal tidal conditions. Despite various repairs over the decades, the seawalls are no longer structurally sound and threaten visitor safety and the historic setting, including the cherry trees around the Tidal Basin. The National Park Service awarded a three-year, $113 million contract to rehabilitate the seawalls. The investment will ensure the NPS is able to protect some of the nation’s most iconic memorials and the Japanese flowering cherry trees from the immediate threats of failing infrastructure and rising sea levels for the next 100 years. Site preparation at the Tidal Basin, beginning imminently, will require the removal of approximately 140 Japanese flowering cherry trees. Approximately 300 trees are scheduled for removal in the construction zones. In late March, I had the honor to participate in the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C., USA, together with Ms. Risa Isobe, 2022 Miss SAKE Japan. The National Cherry Blossom Festival is held in Washington, D.C., every year during the cherry blossom season. It celebrates the longstanding friendship between the United States and Japan by honoring the gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Japan in 1912, as a symbol of friendship between the two countries. The cherry blossom trees in Washington, D.C., are famous throughout the United States and attract more than 1.5 million visitors from around the country and the world every year. The festival spans four weeks and includes a variety of activities, including cherry blossom viewing, fireworks, parades, music events, exhibitions of Japanese culture and performances. During the festival, restaurants and shops throughout the city are decorated with cherry flowers, and the whole city is bloomed with cherry blossoms.
