“To use the power of the bison, I had to perform that part of my vision for the people to see.” ― Author: Black Elk Centuries ago, bison herds roamed this shortgrass prairie within the shadow of the Front Range. Despite the contamination on the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Site, there were extensive and healthy wildlife populations throughout the Arsenal. Deer, prairie dogs, coyotes, and many species of hawks, owls and other birds thrived in the abandoned fields, grasslands and wood lots that had been protected from forty years of urban sprawl and development. Now, bison have returned and are thriving. The Refuge is now home to more than 250 bison. However, the Refuge's goal is not to increase sightings of the animals, but to restore the prairie habitat by managing the composition and structure of native vegetation, a goal they can accomplish with grazing bison. Bison snip grasses lower to the root than livestock and other ungulates do, therefore helping to create a mosaic of different patches of vegetation. Masked flower-piercers do an end run around flowers' stamen and stigmas, piercing a hole at the base of the sepals to get direct access to the nectary. This short-changes the flower, as the Flower-piercers don't pick up or deliver any pollen. This creates further problems for the flower because hummingbirds that would normally access the nectary by going by the stamen and stigmas and picking up and delivering pollen, instead use the holes cut by flower-poercers to get straight into the nectary. #puembobirdinggarden Sony A7RV, Sony 600mm f4, big tripod
I visited one of my usual pika spots on the Beartooth Plateau this weekend. The pika were busy feeding, but I didn't see much haying (I did see lots of large hay piles though). No breath for you! It was too warm and humid to see bird breath this morning at Cherry River, but there were a few minutes of really nice light immediately before and after sunrise. I'm continuing to experiment with really shallow depth field, shooting through narrow tunnels of cattails. I like the way the out-of-focus vegetation looks like watercolor brush strokes. Later, I found a male Marsh wren busy building a nest in his territory. He was carrying old, waterlogged cattail stems to the worksite and weaving them together. He took a break from his work to court a female that was perusing his handiwork, frantically singing above here. At one point he was gathering cattail cotton and trying to sing to the female at the same time. Apparently he never learned not to court with his mouth full and wound up losing all the cotton. I joined the other grizzarazzi photographing this beautiful boar at a bison carcass near a pullout in Yellowstone. When I arrived, the bear was way up on a hillside, and often difficult to see through falling snow. The snow picked up to the point of us not being able to see the hill, let alone the bear, and when it cleared, he had moved and was already ~1/3 of the way to the carcass (and us). Much excitement! He approached the carcass slowly, obviously concerned by all of us people and the traffic back-up on the road and started to feed. He got spooked by a front end loader that came along and couldn't get through all the cars illegally stopped on the road (at least 1 without a driver in it), and moved back about 200 yards. After a ranger came along, cleared out traffic, and things calmed down, the bear came back to the carcass and fed, often pausing to scan all us rude people staring at him while he ate.
