Due to a nice warm day yesterday, I was able to find a number of beautiful American Anoles. In this series I wanted to focus on how cool the eyes are on these little lizards. Like chameleons, their eyes move around independently of each other to aid in finding food, and I imagine to also watch for predators. I love the subtle coloration around the eyes too, which seems to amplify their expression as they move around scanning their surroundings. We recently received a call from a concerned citizen regarding an eastern box turtle he had found on the road in need of help. After viewing photos of the turtle we quickly realized the turtle was not sick or injured, he just needed help getting to the other side of the road safely. Please keep in mind turtles cannot be relocated more then a mile away from where they were originally found. Turtles have a “homing instinct” which means when they are removed from their territory they try to find their way back home. Studies have shown that when a turtle is moved more than a mile from their home territory they often do not survive. Not only are they at an increased risk of getting hit by a car while trying to find their way back, but the stress of being in unfamiliar territory will cause them to stop eating and they will die of starvation. Which is why we always release turtles within a mile of where they were originally found. When in doubt remember, you can reach out to us at anytime for help! We are here for you and the turtles when you need us!

We get asked this question all the time but the truth is, while some of our native species are venomous, snakes do not pose a danger to people, children, or pets when left alone! If you have snakes on your property it is extremely important that children understand wild snakes should be watched from a distance and never touched or picked up as any animal can bite when it feels threatened. Children should be instructed to alert an adult whenever they see a snake. While playing outside they should not be putting their hands and feet in holes, rock crevices, or flipping over logs or rocks. Be proactive; take your children around your yard/property and show them areas where snakes might be. For pets, do your best to make your property unattractive to snakes, and remain vigilant when your pets are roaming free. Snake avoidance training is gaining popularity among dog owners and is another option to coexist with venomous species. Please keep in mind that relocating and/or killing snakes, is not only inhumane but is a short term solution that will not keep snakes out of your yard, improve the situation, or make you or your pets safer in the future. Common sense along with being knowledgeable and proactive goes a long way!

I was pretty lucky to stumble upon not 1, not 2, but 3 different timber rattlesnakes in last weeks excursion. These snakes are unfortunately becoming exceedingly rare in Appalachia thanks to habitat loss, but the specific area we were backpacking was a clear stronghold. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission encourages sightings of these snakes to be reported via e-mail to help keep track of populations, so I made sure to do that with all three snakes. The third snake we saw (picture #1) was spotted by @little_cclose as I had already passed it on the trail. This snake was a juvenile and was very calm as I used a long stick to safely loop under the snake and move it out of the trail. Happy Fourth of July to All. Here is a gorgeous Timber Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus) from Pisgah National forest today. These snakes are generally pretty reclusive and timid, and want no part of being around people, so they tend to go unseen hiding around deadfall and tucked away in rocky outcrops or caves. Timber rattlesnake bites can be deadly if left untreated however this is very rare and most cases are effectively treated. The best thing to do when coming across one of these guys is to keep a safe distance and leave it alone. This past Saturday we did the Mid Atlantic Reptile Expo in Greenville ,NC. We tried something new and went went quite well! Front an center we had an education station with signage covering some basic questions and a couple example setups. Being able to answer questions with physical examples was a lot easier (and I believe more impactful as well). It was a long day but another day worth it. Semi recently I got a small terrarium for my work office. 8X6X6. I set it up with 8-10 Porcellio Ornatus High Yellow. It was fun conversation piece and they are a great species to show people because of their size and color. I was happy to find mancae after a while and now they are about half sized. Tonight I made a new home for the new generation and pulled out 20. Looks like there maybe another 5-8 left outside the original adults.
