Barbarella, 2024 Alcohol Ink on Yupo paper 18" × 18" (art) 23.5" × 23.5" (frame) I envisioned a twisted trip through space, an experiment using multiple circular gradations that were ever so slightly not concentric to add to the optic effects of the patterns and their anomalies. Barbarella was the working title from the very beginning, and it stuck all the way through its completion. There is no better name for it. Barbarella exudes the quirky sci-fi kitsch of that 1968 film (it is a film, NOT a movie) but also is a solid visual interpretation of Sven Väth's song "Barbarella ", specifically the remix below. Jack Anders “Janders” Nelson came to us his freshman year duing our Halloween program. He said few words during that trip (maybe because he was dressed like Slenderman...) but he has become a staple of Mountain Alliance ever since. From Paddling Academy to mulitple Spring and Fall break programs to afternoon and weekend trips, he has participated in just about every program that we offer. His favorites include paddling, climbing, and hiking/backpacking (and, of course, heckling the staff 😄). It’s been a joy seeing this young man grow - not in height obviously, he came to us standing well over 7ft tall - but in courage, resilience, leadership, and so many more unidentifiable qualities. It started with karaoke in the 90s, at least for me (Sarah). Singing is alchemy, a way to let go of old programming and turn pain into beauty, connect with people and have an insane amount of fun in the process. Honestly I only play instruments so that I can sing. My dog hates the digeridoo so I rarely play it, even though I love it. Chad got his start playing in punk rock bands in high school in the 90s. He literally made an instrument out of rubber bands and a tissue box and played it until his parents saw he was serious about music and got him a guitar. He's played in tons of bands.
