As a new grad nurse, self-care is essential. Here are some tips I’ve learned along the way to prioritize well-being: ◽️Movement: Find a sport that resonates with you and makes you happy, wherever it’s weightlifting, yoga, running or pilates. I feel so much better after a good workout. ◽️Eat healthy: Opt for nutritious meals and snacks to boost your energy levels. Bringing to work protein-rich snacks can help keep you fueled and focused throughout your shift. ◽️Build a support system: Surround yourself with fellow nurses who understand the challenges and joys of the profession. ◽️Set boundaries: Don’t be afraid to say no and prioritize your own needs. ◽️Make time for hobbies: Pursue activities outside of work that bring you joy and relaxation. 🧠 Alice in Wonderland Syndrome (or Todd Syndrome) is a byproduct of a neurological condition resulting in a distortion of the person’s body image, surrounding space, and/or time. People may perceive an object as smaller or larger, or closer or farther, than it actually is, or they might feel confused about a size or shape of their body part(s). There can be a distortion in any of the other bodily senses. These misperceptions are more common at nighttime, and more often seen in children than other age groups. 😷 Episodes may be accompanied by agitation, mood disturbances, memory impairment, nausea, dizziness, or loss of limb control. To help paint a picture of this syndrome, here are some examples that people have described: • Hands or head seem disproportionately large compared to the rest of the body • Time moves either at light speed or a snail’s pace • Feeling disconnected from one’s body, thoughts/feelings, or surroundings - as though they’re watching their existence as a third party observer • Hearing strange music or other noises in the absence of such stimuli AIWS is typically associated with brain tumours, migraines, epilepsy, psychoactive substances, and even as an initial sign of certain infections. This is not necessarily a symptom of a diagnosable psychiatric illness. 💊 The cause isn’t fully understood, so the most effective treatment as of today is addressing the root of the condition. Additionally, rest is invaluable. Unsurprisingly, many people experience states of intense fear or panic during these episodes, so we can treat those reactions with anxiolytics and other, non-pharmaceutical, soothing interventions. Antipsychotics have not been proven successful in treating AIWS. 👩🏼⚕️ I’ve never seen this syndrome in my practice, and I doubt I ever will as it’s largely a result of a medical condition. Although this may not be a psychiatric issue, I found it an interesting phenomenon to learn about and hope you feel the same. ✨ As always, this is only a brief overview so I encourage you to refer to a trusted source for more information.

Not fitness related, but definitely worth a share. Today is National Nurse Day and the start to Nurse’s Week! This is my first year celebrating and with that I wanted to share my job with anyone who follows me that doesn’t know me personally. I’ve been in obstetrics for about 5 months now. It feels like it hasn’t been that long but it’s hands down the best position I could’ve asked for as a new grad. I’m proud that I’m still finding the time to prioritize my health and self care even after working nights full time but the socialization I won’t lie has definitely been in the back of the list. But I think I’m getting better so far. If you know a nurse, let them know how much you appreciate them! Abandonment. This was the word that haunted me. I was so afraid of people abandoning me, that I would do anything to make them like me. Well, maybe not ANYTHING, but pretty close. — I would agree with their political views. Not voice my opinion. Say yes to doing things I knew I didn’t have time or energy for. Stay in relationships that were toxic for fear of being alone. — Over time, we develop a pattern. Self-abandonment. We are so preoccupied with not loosing relationships with others, that we abandon ourselves. You know the feeling. — Picking up an extra shift when you promised yourself a day off. Over-volunteering at church because no one else will step up and your fellow people pleasers are drowning. Skipping meals so that you can “show up” for other people. — I wish I’d had support for this issue 10 years ago. It would have saved me time, money and inner peace. My goal is to offer that to you. — What would it look like to devote 8 weeks THIS SUMMER to repairing the relationship you have with yourself? You deserve to show up for yourself. “I don’t think I’m cut out for this…” I still remember how broken and discouraged I felt when I uttered those words to my mom on the phone. I didn’t know how to process the 73 I scored on my first test in pharmacology, failure was foreign to me. So I holed myself up in my room for three days, cried, and literally thought of all possible solutions that involved me quitting my dream. It was my mom and sister that encouraged me to continue, to pick myself up and try again because they knew I could succeed. And thank God I listened. The journey was hard and at some point I hit the lowest point in my life: removing people from my life, working multiple jobs, and doing the bare minimum to take care of myself— I lost so much weight that my pants were loose because I was only eating about one meal a day. I didn’t realize that adapting to nursing school would require me to undergo change and reinvent myself. But the change was beautiful. Ran my first 5k in support of ovarian cancer research 🩵🏃🏻♀️🔬 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic cancers. ONLY about 20% of ovarian tumors are detected due to lack of screening & early detection tests! Symptoms can also be subtle and often overlooked like abdominal pain, bloating, frequent urination, change in bowel habits, and more. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Felt so many emotions doing this 5k — exhausted since I’m a beginner runner girly but so amazed at everyone that showed up to support and honor those affected by ovarian cancer. ⁉️Questions, thoughts, experiences, comments? 🫁The ventilator is the only one I’ve got experience with. As the ICU nurse I rarely ever touch the ventilators. This is the responsibility of our amazing RT staff or sometimes the intensivist will. You see at the top left the MODE in this case is PRVC. This is a “full support” mode we most often use. Pressure Regulated Volume Control. ⭕️ 🫁At the bottom circled in red are the SETTINGS. We as the nurses report the mode and these settings. The patient is set to an FiO2 of 60%….a Tidal Volume of 330….PEEP of 5….and Respiratory Rate of 24. 🚨 You’ll notice I also circled the number 44…that’s the peak pressure. I like to know if they have had high peak pressures. This is a high number but it could be worse. This shows me there could be an obstruction say a mucous plug or maybe they are not sedated enough. Possibly coughing. 🫁 The 26 is the actual respiratory rate. So the vent is set to 24 but the patient is breathing a rate of 26.
