Qotd: What’s a topic that really interests you? Good morning! I feel like the last few years, reading wise, have been the years of fantasy for me, but this year I’ve been making more of an effort to not neglect my historical fiction TBR. A recent historical fiction read that I really enjoyed was @reneerosen_ Fifth Avenue Glamour Girl. Fifth Avenue Glamour Girl shows us a glimpse of the life of the cosmetic entrepreneur Estee Lauder through the eyes of imaginary best friend Gloria Downey. I enjoyed learning about the rise of the Lauder empire and the lengths that Estee had to go to in order to become a success. Her work ethic and eternal optimism was astounding. I mean she literally began her business in her kitchen! And not only did Estee have to deal with the competitive nature of the cosmetic industry during the Depression and WWII years, but she also had to overcome antisemitism in the US. Along with learning about Estee’s life, I enjoyed learning more about the cosmetic industry and was shocked to realize how long brands like Revlon and Elizabeth Arden have been around. And once in ‘the system’ could we ever get out? - ‘Mirage trans’ draws on the artist’s memory of his home country of Chile, where electricity was used as an instrument of torture and frequent power cuts isolated and terrorised citizens. Born in 1972 in Santiago, Navarro grew up under the Pinochet dictatorship. #RecentAcquisition ✨ Nina Molloy explores her experiences as a Thai American through works that weave together the past and present; the painted surface and subject; and memory and mythology. In “Nang Ta-Khian” (2021), Molloy depicts a female water spirit popularized by Thai folklore. The spirit lays against a rock at the bank of a body of water among a lush, verdant landscape complete with a symbolic peacock in the left foreground. Both the figure and her reflection in the water stare out at the viewer. While Molloy draws on folkloric themes, the addition of sheet metal grounds the work in a contemporary context. Italian-born, New York-based design visionary Gaetano Pesce has passed away at the age of 84 in New York. Pesce leaves behind a legacy of unparalleled pioneering in the world of design. His radical contributions to the industry include his socio-political commentary on the state of the world in the late 1960s, as well as his unapologetic criticism of the standard to which the industry at the time held architectural design and urban planning. Pesce united designers and free thinkers alike in a collective approach to reexamining and restructuring the interiors industry. With a tentative technique and a chronic air of playfulness, Pesce challenged the methods of design that he observed through his distinct furniture pieces that would reflect his larger-than-life creative foresight. Gaetano Pesce was among the greatest designers to spearhead the notion that the institution of the design industry should be graciously scrutinized to ensure the utmost reverence for the craft.
